There were people who collected jewelry, vintage watches, or expensive cars. Serena McAllister collected paintings.
Her apartment in Manhattan wasn't large, but every wall carried a story. Landscapes painted in soft oils, mythical creatures hidden beneath moonlight, forgotten castles standing against stormy skies, and portraits of people who seemed almost alive whenever the evening sun slipped through her windows. Whenever she finished work, she loved sitting quietly with a cup of coffee and staring at them. They made the noisy city outside disappear.
No one really understood why she was so obsessed with fantasy artwork. Her friends teased her constantly, saying she should invest in something practical instead. Serena only laughed. She couldn't explain it herself. Every time she looked at those paintings, something deep inside her felt strangely... familiar, as though they were memories she had forgotten rather than places someone had imagined.
Perhaps it came from her parents. Both of them had been artists before they passed away years ago, leaving Serena to grow up with her aunt. Their old studio had always smelled of oil paint, fresh canvas, and varnish. Even now, whenever she stepped into an art gallery, she felt as though she had returned home.
Friday evenings had become her favorite ritual. Instead of going to bars or expensive restaurants with coworkers, she wandered through galleries, flea markets, and antique stores searching for hidden treasures.
That rainy afternoon was no different.
Dark clouds blanketed Manhattan while people hurried beneath umbrellas. Serena had just finished volunteering at the children's orphanage where she spent every Friday evening reading stories and helping with homework. Her clothes were slightly damp from the rain as she wandered through narrow downtown streets without any destination in mind.
A small handwritten sign hanging outside an old building caught her attention.
'Closing Forever. Final Antique Sale.'
Curious, Serena stepped inside.
The little shop smelled of old wood and dust. Shelves overflowed with ancient clocks, silver candlesticks, cracked porcelain dolls, faded books, and decorative swords that looked as though they belonged inside a medieval castle.
A tiny bell rang above the entrance.
An elderly woman looked up from behind the counter and smiled warmly.
'Take your time, dear. Everything must find a new home before tomorrow.'
Serena nodded politely and wandered deeper into the shop.
She examined several paintings but none of them stood out. Most were ordinary landscapes or family portraits painted decades ago.
Then she saw it.
Hidden behind two larger canvases rested a breathtaking painting unlike anything she had ever seen.
Towering snow-covered mountains surrounded a magnificent silver castle that stood proudly upon a cliff. Thick forests stretched endlessly beneath it while waterfalls shimmered beneath an enormous full moon.
The castle looked impossibly real.
Every brushstroke carried extraordinary detail. Tiny lights glowed from the castle windows. Flags fluttered against invisible winds. Even the shadows between the trees seemed alive.
Serena found herself walking closer without realizing it.
'Beautiful, isn't it?' the old woman asked softly.
'I've never seen anything like this,' Serena whispered.
'Most people ignore it.'
'Why?'
The old woman smiled mysteriously.
'Perhaps it only calls those who are meant to find it.'
Serena laughed awkwardly.
'That's a strange way to advertise a painting.'
'Maybe.'
She carefully lifted the canvas. It was surprisingly heavy.
There were scratches around the wooden frame as though it had survived centuries.
'Who painted it?' Serena asked.
'No one knows.'
'How old is it?'
'Older than anyone alive.'
That answer sounded impossible.
Still, Serena couldn't take her eyes away from the castle.
For one brief second...
She could have sworn she saw movement inside one of the windows.
A tall silhouette.
Watching her.
She blinked.
Nothing.
Just paint.
'I'll take it,' she said before she could change her mind.
The elderly woman wrapped the painting carefully inside brown paper.
'I'm giving you a large discount,' she said.
'You don't have to.'
'I insist.'
Serena paid the full amount anyway.
'Business seems difficult these days.'
The woman accepted the money with grateful eyes.
As Serena picked up the painting, the old woman gently placed a wrinkled hand over hers.
'May magic always guide your path.'
Serena smiled politely, assuming it was simply an old woman's strange blessing.
'Thank you.'
She walked back into the rain.
That night, after hanging the painting opposite her bed, Serena couldn't stop staring at it.
The moonlight pouring through the window reflected across the silver castle.
It almost looked alive.
Eventually she fell asleep.
She dreamed of dragons flying across crimson skies.
Mermaids singing beneath crystal oceans.
Fairies dancing inside glowing forests.
The dream felt astonishingly vivid.
When she woke the next morning, she remembered every detail.
It felt less like a dream and more like a place she had actually visited.
The second night, the dream changed.
She found herself standing at the foot of the mountain beneath the silver castle.
The cold wind brushed against her skin.
Someone high above seemed to be waiting.
Although she couldn't see anyone, she felt an irresistible pull urging her upward.
She woke suddenly, breathing heavily.
Her heart refused to calm down for several minutes.
The third night became even stranger.
This time she reached the castle itself.
Massive silver gates opened silently before her.
Long hallways stretched endlessly beneath crystal chandeliers.
Ancient banners bearing the image of a wolf fluttered gently despite the complete absence of wind.
She wandered through the corridors until a pair of giant doors slowly opened.
Beyond them lay an enormous royal bedchamber.
Moonlight spilled across luxurious black sheets embroidered with silver wolves.
Someone was sleeping there.
A man.
His body looked impossibly powerful.
Broad shoulders.
Strong arms.
Dark hair falling carelessly across his forehead.
A golden crown rested on the bedside table beside him.
He wasn't wearing much.
Heat instantly rushed into Serena's cheeks.
She turned to leave.
Then the man shifted.
A deep groan escaped his lips.
His fingers tightened around himself beneath the blankets as though he were trapped inside a very intimate dream.
Serena's face turned completely red.
'Oh my God...'
She covered her eyes, but curiosity forced tiny gaps between her fingers.
The handsome stranger whispered something she couldn't understand before another rough groan echoed throughout the room.
That sound alone sent an unfamiliar warmth through Serena's body.
She jerked awake inside her apartment.
Her breathing was uneven.
Her entire face burned with embarrassment.
'What kind of dream was that?' she muttered.
She spent the entire day unable to erase that mysterious man's face from her mind.
Whenever she closed her eyes, she remembered his voice.
His broad chest.
His powerful hands.
She scolded herself repeatedly.
'Get it together, Serena.'
But her thoughts refused to listen.
The fourth night arrived.
Everything felt different.
The room seemed unusually cold.
The painting hanging across from her bed shimmered faintly beneath the moonlight.
Serena remained asleep.
Then...
A woman's gentle voice echoed inside her mind.
'Wake up...'
She opened her eyes.
The apartment remained completely silent.
'Touch the painting...'
The whisper returned.
Soft.
Beautiful.
Impossible to ignore.
Still half asleep, Serena climbed out of bed.
Her feet carried her forward without resistance.
She stopped before the painting.
The silver castle glowed faintly.
The moon inside the artwork suddenly became brighter than the moon outside her window.
'Touch it,' the mysterious voice repeated.
Serena slowly raised her trembling hand.
'This is ridiculous,' she whispered.
Yet something inside her heart insisted it wasn't.
Her fingertips brushed against the painted castle wall.
The surface rippled like water.
She gasped.
Before she could pull away, an overwhelming force grabbed her wrist.
The room disappeared.
Light swallowed everything.
The next second, Serena crashed onto something unexpectedly soft.
Warm hands instantly caught her waist.
She looked up.
Golden eyes filled with absolute shock stared directly into hers.
The same handsome king from her dreams was lying beneath her.
Neither of them moved.
Neither of them breathed.
Outside the chamber, someone suddenly shouted.
'Your Majesty! Is everything alright?'
