The events of the Moon Festival spread through the palace faster than wildfire. By sunrise, every servant, guard, noble, and visiting Alpha had heard some version of the story. Some claimed the Moon Goddess herself had blessed the human maid. Others insisted it had merely been an unfortunate coincidence. Yet no matter how many explanations were offered, one fact remained unchanged—the Alpha King had walked directly to Micaela before everyone present, ignoring centuries of royal protocol.
For Micaela, the whispers became impossible to escape.
As she entered the palace kitchens the following morning, conversations immediately stopped.
Several servants lowered their eyes.
Others openly stared.
"Morning," Clara greeted quietly, trying to ease the awkward silence.
"Morning."
"Ignore them."
"I'm trying."
"People fear what they don't understand."
Micaela sighed.
"I don't even understand it myself."
Lady Eleanor entered moments later carrying her daily assignments.
"Enough talking. We have guests arriving from the Southern Pack before noon."
Everyone immediately returned to work.
"Micaela."
"Yes, my lady?"
"His Majesty requested fresh flowers for the eastern observatory."
Several servants exchanged surprised glances.
Lady Eleanor noticed.
"Is there a problem?"
"No, my lady."
"Then stop staring and get back to work."
Half an hour later, Micaela climbed the winding staircase leading toward the palace observatory. It was one of the quietest places inside the castle, used mainly by members of the royal family to observe the stars and conduct private meetings.
She carried a basket filled with freshly picked white lilies.
As she stepped inside, she found the room empty.
At least... she thought it was.
"You're early."
The familiar deep voice made her turn.
The Alpha King stood beside the enormous glass windows overlooking the kingdom.
"Your Majesty," she said, lowering her head.
"Relax."
"I brought the flowers."
"I know."
She carefully placed the lilies into crystal vases, hoping to finish quickly.
"Everyone is talking," the King said quietly.
Her hands paused.
"About the festival?"
"About you."
"I never meant to attract attention."
"I know."
"I'm sorry."
He smiled faintly.
"There you go again."
Micaela couldn't help returning a tiny smile.
"Habit."
For a brief moment, silence settled comfortably between them.
Then the King spoke again.
"Are you afraid of me?"
She hesitated.
"I was."
His expression softened.
"Was?"
"Now... I don't know."
He slowly walked closer.
"And does that frighten you?"
Micaela looked into his sapphire eyes.
"More than anything."
Before either of them could say another word, the King's wolf surged violently beneath his skin.
"Mate."
His breathing grew heavier.
He immediately stepped back.
"Leave."
She blinked in confusion.
"Your Majesty?"
"Now."
Something in his voice frightened her.
Without another question, she curtsied and hurried from the observatory.
The moment the doors closed, the King gripped the stone windowsill until cracks spread across the marble.
"Control yourself," he growled.
"Mark her," his wolf demanded.
"No."
"She belongs to us."
"She's not ready."
"Neither are we."
"Exactly."
Elsewhere in the palace...
Princess Anastasia stood inside the royal library speaking quietly with one of the oldest council elders.
"You witnessed the festival," she said.
"I did."
"Tell me honestly... what did you see?"
The elderly wolf sighed.
"I've lived nearly three centuries."
"And?"
"The Moon Goddess rarely interferes directly."
"You're suggesting..."
"I'm suggesting nothing."
"But you're thinking it."
He nodded slowly.
"If fate has truly chosen a human... opposing it may carry consequences."
Anastasia's smile disappeared.
"Then fate has made a mistake."
That afternoon, Micaela returned to the servants' quarters earlier than expected.
Clara immediately noticed her troubled expression.
"What happened?"
"The King..."
"Did he hurt you?"
"No."
"Then what?"
"He told me to leave."
"That's good, isn't it?"
"Maybe."
She sat heavily on her bed.
"But before that... everything felt different."
"Different how?"
"When he looks at me... it feels like he's searching for something."
Clara frowned.
"You're overthinking."
"I hope so."
Night fell over the palace.
Rain clouds gathered above the kingdom, hiding the moon behind dark skies.
Inside his private chambers, the Alpha King stood before the fireplace while Marcus entered quietly.
"You sent for me?"
"Close the door."
Marcus obeyed.
"Something happened today."
"With Micaela?"
"My wolf almost marked her."
Marcus froze.
"Already?"
"I've never struggled with control before."
"That only happens with true mates."
"I know."
"Then what's the problem?"
The King laughed bitterly.
"She's human."
"She won't survive the politics surrounding this."
"Nor will the kingdom."
"Exactly."
Marcus folded his arms.
"So what will you do?"
"Nothing."
"Can you?"
Silence answered him.
Because both men already knew the truth.
The mate bond grew stronger every day.
Ignoring it would soon become impossible.
At that very moment, hidden within another wing of the palace, Princess Anastasia met secretly with Cedric.
"Everything is prepared," he informed her.
"Good."
"Are you certain?"
"Completely."
"If this fails..."
"It won't."
She walked toward the window overlooking the servants' quarters.
"Tomorrow morning... Micaela Whitlock will make a mistake so serious that not even the King will be able to protect her."
Cedric lowered his head.
"As you wish, Your Highness."
Outside, thunder echoed across the night sky.
Far below, completely unaware of the danger approaching, Micaela drifted into an uneasy sleep.
She dreamed of glowing blue eyes.
A silver wolf standing beneath the full moon.
And a voice whispering only two words.
"Come home."
When she woke suddenly before dawn, her heart pounded against her chest.
She couldn't explain why.
But deep inside...
She knew something terrible was about to happen.
