Six months later, Red Mesa was preparing for the Spring Moon celebration.
The entire pack gathered beneath the lanterns as the council announced a new trade agreement with three neighboring packs.
My father stood at the center of the ceremony.
Beside him was Wyatt.
And beside Wyatt was me.
I wasn't standing behind anyone anymore.
I had spent the past six months rebuilding the part of myself I had lost in Grayhaven.
I helped expand Red Mesa's trade network, negotiated new routes, and took over several projects my family had once considered too complicated for me.
Nobody called me wolfless anymore.
They called me capable.
They called me reliable.
And slowly, I learned to call myself the same things.
When the ceremony ended, Wyatt handed me a sealed letter.
"It came from Grayhaven this morning."
I recognized the Hawthorne seal immediately.
For a moment, I simply stared at it.
Then I opened it.
The letter was from the Stonebridge council.
Julian had officially stepped down from the Alpha succession.
His grandmother had also resigned as matriarch after the council voted to expose the records she had hidden.
The final line caught my attention.
Stonebridge had formally recognized the original marriage agreement between the Hawthorne and Calloway families as terminated.
No conditions.
No demands.
No invitation to return.
Just freedom.
I folded the letter and smiled.
"Everything is finally finished," Wyatt said.
"Yes," I replied.
That night, I walked alone to the edge of the Red Mesa cliffs.
The moon hung low above the desert.
I remembered the girl who had once stood in Grayhaven's snow, waiting for a man to choose her.
She had believed that becoming someone's Luna would prove she was worthy.
She had believed that if she became prettier, calmer, sweeter, and more obedient, Julian would finally look at her the way he looked at everyone else.
She had been wrong.
Love was never supposed to be a test you had to pass.
A title was never supposed to determine your worth.
And I didn't need a wolf, a mate mark, or a Luna crown to know who I was.
Footsteps sounded behind me.
Wyatt stopped a few feet away.
"Everyone's looking for you."
I turned and smiled.
"Tell them I'll be there in a minute."
He nodded, then paused.
"Clara?"
"Yes?"
"Are you happy?"
I looked at the moonlit desert.
Then I looked at the home waiting behind me.
For years, I had been so desperate to be chosen that I had forgotten I could choose myself.
Now I finally understood.
"Yes," I said.
"I'm happy."
Wyatt smiled and walked back toward the celebration.
I stayed for another moment.
The wind moved gently across the cliffs, carrying the warm scent of the desert.
No cedar warning.
No coastal perfume.
No Alpha pressure.
Just home.
I took one final look toward the distant horizon.
Somewhere beyond it was Grayhaven.
Somewhere beyond it was Julian.
But neither one had a place in my future anymore.
I turned my back on the past.
And walked toward the lights.
They had once made me believe I was nothing because I wasn't the woman they wanted.
They had once made me believe I needed to be chosen.
But they were wrong.
I didn't need to be anyone's Luna.
I didn't need Julian Hawthorne's crown.
I didn't need the approval of the Stonebridge elders.
I only needed to become the woman I had abandoned five years ago.
My own woman.
My own choice.
My own future.
And for the first time in my life, I wasn't waiting for anyone to choose me.
I had finally chosen myself.
