Trevor Fleming didn't return to the villa until nearly eleven that night.
He had spent the entire evening accompanying Wynn Harper to a charity banquet organized by the Andostan Business Association. Throughout the event, reporters surrounded them, taking photographs and praising Trevor for supporting Wynn's charitable foundation.
Neither of them noticed the headlines they were creating together.
To everyone watching, they looked like the perfect couple.
When Trevor finally stepped into the villa, he instinctively loosened his tie and looked toward the staircase.
Usually, no matter how late he returned, Celeste would be waiting.
Sometimes she would be asleep on the sofa with a blanket wrapped around her.
Other times she would come out of the kitchen carrying a bowl of hot soup.
Tonight, the villa was unusually quiet.
"Mr. Fleming," Hannah greeted softly.
"Where's Mrs. Fleming?"
Hannah hesitated before answering.
"Mrs. Fleming... left this morning."
Trevor frowned.
"Left?"
"Yes, sir."
"She went back home?"
"I believe so."
Trevor wasn't surprised.
He assumed Celeste had become upset because he couldn't spend time with her.
She had always been sensitive whenever it came to him.
"Did she say anything before leaving?"
Hannah walked toward the dining table and picked up a white envelope.
"She asked me to give you this."
Trevor accepted it casually.
His name was written neatly across the front.
It was Celeste's handwriting.
"Anything else?"
"She thanked me for taking care of her these past years."
"That's all?"
"Yes, sir."
Trevor placed the envelope on the table without opening it.
"I'll look at it tomorrow."
He believed it was another one of Celeste's handwritten letters.
Over the years, she had written countless notes reminding him to eat on time, sleep earlier, and take care of himself.
Sometimes she even apologized after arguments she hadn't started.
Trevor had long grown accustomed to those letters.
He headed upstairs.
The moment he entered the bedroom, he stopped.
Something felt... different.
He slowly walked toward the wardrobe.
Half of it was empty.
Celeste's dresses were gone.
Her handbags had disappeared.
Even the framed wedding photograph she always kept beside the bed was missing.
Only Trevor's belongings remained.
For the first time, the spacious bedroom felt strangely cold.
He stood there for a long moment before quietly sitting on the edge of the bed.
"She really packed everything," he murmured.
Still, he wasn't worried.
He believed she was simply trying to make him feel guilty.
"She'll come back after calming down," he said to himself.
The following morning, Trevor finally opened the envelope before heading to work.
A stack of legal documents slipped into his hands.
The bold title across the first page immediately caught his attention.
"Divorce Agreement."
Trevor's expression darkened.
He flipped through every page.
Property division.
Financial settlement.
Custody rights.
At the bottom of the final page was Celeste's signature.
She had already signed every document.
Trevor laughed quietly.
"She actually went this far."
Seven years.
In Trevor's eyes, Celeste had always loved him too deeply to ever leave.
He couldn't imagine her giving up so easily.
"She's bluffing," he muttered.
Without another glance, he placed the agreement inside his briefcase and left for the office.
Meanwhile, upstairs, Jordyn finally woke up.
"Where's Mom?" she asked while rubbing her sleepy eyes.
"Mrs. Fleming went home," Hannah replied gently.
"Already?"
"Yes."
Jordyn looked disappointed for only a brief moment before asking another question.
"Can Dad take me to see Wynn today?"
Hannah forced a smile but said nothing.
She remembered the lonely look on Celeste's face before leaving.
Her heart quietly ached.
At the office, Trevor attempted to focus on work.
Yet something felt off.
By noon, he had already asked his assistant for coffee twice.
He signed the wrong document during a meeting.
Even the company's legal director noticed his distraction.
"Mr. Fleming, are you alright?"
"I'm fine."
But he wasn't.
Every day around lunchtime, Celeste would send him a message.
"Have you eaten?"
"Don't skip your medicine."
"Drive safely after work."
His phone remained completely silent.
Almost unconsciously, Trevor opened their chat history.
The last message was from Celeste.
"Let's have lunch together as a family."
His reply underneath simply read:
"Something came up. Lunch is canceled."
That was it.
Nothing else.
Trevor stared at the conversation for several seconds.
For some reason, he suddenly remembered the restaurant.
Had Celeste gone there anyway?
Had she seen him with Wynn and Jordyn?
He quickly dismissed the thought.
Even if she had, there was nothing inappropriate.
He was only accompanying a friend.
Still...
The uneasy feeling inside him continued growing.
That evening, Trevor returned home earlier than usual.
Jordyn happily ran toward him.
"Dad!"
"How was school?"
"Good! Can I call Mom?"
"Of course."
Jordyn immediately grabbed her tablet and started a video call.
The screen rang several times.
Then a robotic voice appeared.
"The number you are trying to reach is currently unavailable."
"That's strange," Jordyn whispered.
"Mom always answers."
She called again.
The same message played.
"Dad... why isn't Mom picking up?"
Trevor forced a calm smile.
"She's probably busy with work."
"But she always answers my calls," Jordyn insisted.
Trevor didn't know how to respond.
He suddenly realized something.
In all the years they had been married...
Celeste had never ignored either of them.
No matter how busy she was.
Late that night, Trevor walked into the bedroom once again.
The empty wardrobe greeted him like silent proof that something had changed.
He reached for his phone.
For the first time since receiving the divorce agreement...
He called Celeste.
The call connected for only a moment before an automated voice interrupted.
"The number you are trying to reach is switched off."
Trevor frowned deeply.
He called again.
The same result.
A strange feeling settled inside his chest.
It wasn't anger.
It wasn't annoyance.
It was something he had never felt before.
Uneasiness.
For years, he had believed Celeste would always be waiting for him.
But standing alone in the silent bedroom, staring at the empty side of the wardrobe, Trevor couldn't shake one terrifying thought.
What if... this time, she wasn't coming back?
