The flight to London departed on a gray Thursday evening.
Emma sat beside the airplane window watching New York disappear beneath layers of clouds.
The city lights gradually faded.
The skyline vanished.
And for the first time since receiving the offer, the reality of everything truly hit her.
She was leaving.
Not permanently.
Not yet.
But she was stepping into a future she had only imagined before.
Her phone buzzed.
A message from Lucas.
Lucas: Text me when you land.
Emma smiled.
Emma: I will.
A few seconds later another message appeared.
Lucas: And don't fall in love with London.
Emma laughed softly.
Emma: No promises.
Lucas: Traitor.
The exchange made her feel better.
For a moment, the anxiety disappeared.
Yet once the plane climbed above the clouds, silence returned.
And with it came uncertainty.
What if the interview went perfectly?
What if she received the offer?
What then?
No matter how many times she asked herself the question, the answer never came.
Seven hours later, London greeted her with rain.
Not heavy rain.
The gentle, persistent kind that seemed woven into the city's identity.
Emma stepped outside Heathrow Airport and immediately noticed the difference.
The pace.
The architecture.
The atmosphere.
Everything felt familiar and foreign at the same time.
The company had arranged accommodations at a hotel overlooking the Thames.
As her taxi crossed the city, Emma stared through the window.
Historic buildings stood beside modern skyscrapers.
Red buses moved through crowded streets.
The river flowed calmly through the heart of the city.
London felt elegant.
Sophisticated.
Full of possibility.
And that frightened her more than she expected.
Because she liked it.
A lot.
Back in New York, Lucas stood in his office staring at a design he had reviewed six times already.
His coworkers assumed he was focused.
The truth was the opposite.
His mind wasn't on architecture.
It was on Emma.
The six-hour time difference made everything feel strange.
When she woke up, he was still sleeping.
When he finished work, her day was nearly over.
The distance wasn't enormous.
Yet it felt bigger than expected.
His colleague, Ethan, noticed immediately.
"You look miserable."
Lucas didn't bother denying it.
"Thanks."
"You're welcome."
Ethan sat down across from him.
"What's going on?"
Lucas hesitated.
Then sighed.
"Emma's in London."
Ethan nodded.
"The job thing?"
"Yeah."
"And?"
Lucas looked away.
"I don't know."
Ethan laughed.
"That sounds encouraging."
"I'm serious."
"I know."
His friend leaned back.
"Do you love her?"
The question arrived without warning.
Lucas froze.
For several seconds he said nothing.
Then he answered honestly.
"Yeah."
The word felt strange spoken aloud.
Powerful.
Real.
Ethan nodded.
"Then tell her."
Lucas stared at him.
"That's your advice?"
"It's pretty good advice."
Lucas laughed despite himself.
Yet the suggestion lingered.
Because Ethan wasn't wrong.
He did love her.
The problem was that love didn't solve geography.
It didn't solve careers.
And it definitely didn't solve oceans.
Meanwhile, Emma spent the next two days meeting executives, touring offices, and attending interviews.
Every conversation reinforced the same reality.
This wasn't just a job.
It was a dream opportunity.
The company's headquarters overlooked the river.
Their publishing list included international bestsellers.
Their influence stretched across multiple continents.
Everything about the role felt exciting.
The final interview took place Friday afternoon.
When it ended, one of the executives walked her toward the elevator.
"You've impressed everyone here, Emma."
Her heart immediately accelerated.
"Thank you."
"We'll contact you soon."
The executive smiled.
"But I think you'll be hearing from us."
Emma stepped into the elevator feeling both thrilled and terrified.
Because she understood exactly what that statement meant.
That evening she decided to explore London alone.
The city glowed beneath streetlights.
Historic buildings reflected golden light.
People filled cafés and restaurants despite the cold weather.
Emma walked beside the Thames River, hands tucked into her coat pockets.
The view was breathtaking.
Across the water, the city stretched endlessly.
For a moment she imagined living here.
Working here.
Building a future here.
The image came surprisingly easily.
And that realization hurt.
Because every version of that future felt incomplete.
Lucas wasn't in it.
A sudden sadness settled over her.
She stopped walking and looked out across the river.
For the first time since arriving, she stopped thinking about the job.
Instead, she thought about him.
His laugh.
His terrible jokes.
The way he always listened.
The way he believed in her.
The way he made ordinary moments feel important.
Without realizing it, she pulled out her phone.
Then she called.
New York.
11:30 PM.
Lucas was sitting on his couch when his phone rang.
The moment he saw her name, he answered.
"Hey."
Hearing her voice instantly made him smile.
"Hi."
For a second neither said anything.
Neither realized how much they missed each other until that moment.
"How's London?" Lucas asked.
Emma looked out at the river.
"It's beautiful."
The answer came honestly.
Lucas felt his stomach tighten.
Emma heard the silence.
Immediately she understood.
"Hey."
"Yeah?"
"That's not what I miss."
Lucas smiled slightly.
"No?"
"No."
Another pause.
Then she laughed softly.
"I miss New York."
Lucas nodded.
"Good answer."
"I miss our café."
"Acceptable answer."
"I miss Central Park."
"Better."
Emma smiled.
Then her voice became quieter.
"And I miss you."
The words escaped before she could stop them.
Silence followed.
Neither breathed.
Neither moved.
The world seemed to stop.
For months their relationship had been moving toward this moment.
Toward honesty.
Toward vulnerability.
Toward truth.
Lucas closed his eyes.
His heart pounded.
"Emma."
She waited.
"I miss you too."
Neither said anything else.
Yet somehow everything had changed.
The distance between them suddenly felt very real.
And so did their feelings.
The next morning, Emma prepared to return to New York.
Her flight wasn't until evening.
She spent the day exploring one final time.
Yet her thoughts continually returned to Lucas.
To home.
To what awaited her.
As her plane lifted into the sky that night, she looked down at London.
The city slowly disappeared beneath the clouds.
Beautiful.
Exciting.
Full of opportunity.
But also complicated.
Because somewhere between New York and London, Emma realized something important.
The decision ahead wasn't simply about career.
It wasn't simply about ambition.
It was about choosing between two futures.
And for the first time, she wasn't sure which one she wanted more.
Far below, the Atlantic Ocean stretched endlessly.
Ahead lay New York.
Ahead lay Lucas.
Ahead lay answers neither of them were ready for.
And the distance between their hearts was about to become even more difficult.
