The bells of the Red Castle continued ringing long after the vision disappeared.
Their sound echoed across the Crimson Kingdom like a warning carried by the wind.
People flooded into the streets.
Guards rushed toward defensive positions.
Messengers sprinted through castle corridors.
Fear moved faster than any army.
And fear had arrived.
Elena followed King Alaric through the castle as quickly as she could.
The immortal king moved with purpose.
No hesitation.
No uncertainty.
Only determination.
Yet Elena could see something beneath the surface.
Concern.
Real concern.
The vision inside Queen Seraphine's chambers had changed everything.
Kael Vayne wasn't preparing.
He wasn't hiding.
He was already moving.
That made him infinitely more dangerous.
By the time they reached the main council chamber, Rowan and Lyra were already waiting.
Several nobles stood nearby.
The atmosphere was tense.
Every face carried the same question.
What happens now?
The answer arrived before anyone could ask.
A second tremor shook the castle.
Stronger than the one before.
Candles flickered.
Dust drifted from the ceiling.
A distant roar echoed beneath the stone foundations.
Everyone heard it.
No one needed an explanation.
The prison was weakening.
Again.
Alaric immediately approached the glowing map table.
The kingdom map looked worse.
Much worse.
Dark corruption spread across the northern territories.
Entire sections of forest had turned black.
Several villages were no longer visible.
Not destroyed.
Missing.
As though darkness itself had swallowed them.
One noble stared in horror.
It's spreading faster.
Lyra nodded.
Far faster.
At this rate...
She stopped speaking.
No one wanted to hear the rest.
Alaric looked toward Rowan.
Prepare riders.
We leave immediately.
The warrior frowned.
For Blackwood Tower?
Yes.
A noble immediately objected.
Majesty, you cannot leave the capital now.
The kingdom needs its king.
The king's expression hardened.
The kingdom needs solutions.
Silence followed.
No one argued again.
The king turned toward Elena.
The map chose you.
The prophecy mentions you.
Kael is searching for you.
Which means wherever this path leads, you're coming.
Elena folded her arms.
At least everyone keeps giving me choices.
Rowan laughed.
That was sarcasm.
I know.
The atmosphere briefly lightened.
Only briefly.
Another tremor interrupted the moment.
This time stronger than the last.
The floor cracked.
Not much.
Just enough.
Everyone noticed.
Everyone understood.
Time was running out.
An hour later preparations were complete.
The expedition would leave before sunset.
While soldiers gathered supplies, Elena found herself standing atop one of the castle towers.
The city stretched beneath her.
The Crimson Kingdom looked beautiful from above.
Red rooftops.
Stone streets.
Fields stretching toward distant mountains.
Everything appeared peaceful.
Yet somewhere beneath the surface, disaster waited.
Lyra approached quietly.
You always do that.
Elena glanced at her.
Do what?
Climb high places when you're thinking.
We've known each other a week.
Long enough.
Elena smiled.
Fair.
For a moment they simply watched the city.
Eventually Elena asked the question that had been bothering her.
What exactly is Kael?
Lyra remained silent.
Not who he was.
What he is now.
The mage sighed.
No one knows completely.
That's encouraging.
I'm serious.
The stories disagree.
Some say he became a monster.
Some say he became a spirit.
Some say he became something older than either.
Elena looked toward the mountains.
And what do you believe?
Lyra's expression darkened.
I believe King Alaric built a prison strong enough to last five centuries.
The answer landed heavily.
If a prison that powerful had been necessary, whatever existed inside must be horrifying.
Before Elena could ask more, a horn sounded from below.
Three sharp blasts.
The departure signal.
It was time.
The expedition rode north once again.
This time with greater urgency.
This time with greater fear.
The road passed through villages preparing for war.
Blacksmiths worked late.
Citizens reinforced walls.
Soldiers trained in courtyards.
News of the corruption had spread.
Everyone knew darkness was coming.
Few understood how soon.
They traveled until nightfall.
Then beyond nightfall.
No one suggested stopping.
The mountains of Blackwood grew larger with every passing hour.
Snow-covered peaks pierced the sky.
Dark clouds gathered around them.
Lightning occasionally flashed between distant ridges.
The landscape felt hostile.
Ancient.
Watching.
Near midnight they reached a mountain pass.
The air had become bitterly cold.
Snow covered the ground.
The road narrowed dangerously.
Then Rowan raised a hand.
Everyone stopped.
What is it?
Elena asked.
Tracks.
The warrior dismounted.
Several guards joined him.
Torches illuminated the snow.
Elena immediately saw what concerned them.
Footprints.
Hundreds of them.
Moving toward the mountains.
Toward Blackwood Tower.
Hollow Ones.
Lyra whispered.
The king nodded.
An army.
The realization chilled everyone.
Kael wasn't acting alone anymore.
He was gathering forces.
Preparing.
Planning.
The expedition continued.
Eventually the mountain pass opened into a frozen valley.
And there, illuminated by pale moonlight, stood Blackwood Tower.
The sight stole Elena's breath.
The tower was enormous.
Far larger than the vision suggested.
Dark stone rose from the mountainside.
Broken battlements crowned its summit.
Ancient banners hung motionless despite the wind.
Most disturbing of all was the light.
Dark crimson energy pulsed from the tower windows.
Like a heartbeat.
Like a warning.
Like something alive.
Rowan stared at the fortress.
I've never seen it like this.
Neither have I.
Alaric answered.
The king's voice was unusually quiet.
As though he already knew what waited inside.
Then the ground trembled again.
Not beneath the kingdom.
Beneath the mountain.
A deep cracking sound echoed through the valley.
Everyone looked toward the tower.
A section of the mountainside suddenly collapsed.
Snow and stone crashed downward.
Ancient rock shattered.
And hidden beneath the rubble, something appeared.
A massive circular structure.
Covered in runes.
Covered in chains.
Covered in the same symbols Elena had seen beneath the Red Castle.
The seal.
Lyra's voice sounded horrified.
Not the prison beneath the castle.
Another seal.
Older.
Larger.
Broken.
Everyone stared.
The runes were dark.
Dead.
Destroyed.
Whatever had once been trapped there was gone.
Alaric's face turned pale.
For the first time since Elena had met him, genuine fear appeared in the immortal king's eyes.
No.
The single word barely escaped his lips.
Rowan looked toward him.
What is it?
Alaric didn't answer immediately.
His gaze remained fixed on the shattered seal.
Then he finally spoke.
The prison beneath the castle was never the only prison.
The wind howled across the mountains.
Dark energy pulsed from Blackwood Tower.
And somewhere inside the fortress, something laughed.
Not Kael.
Something older.
Something far worse.
The second seal had broken.
And whatever it once contained was already free.
