The grand ballroom of the Whitmore estate glittered with crystal chandeliers, champagne towers, and the kind of laughter that belonged only to people who had never been forced to beg for love. Scarlett Whitmore sat near the far end of the room in her wheelchair, dressed in a pale silver gown her stepmother had chosen because it made her look quiet, fragile, and easy to ignore.
Tonight was supposed to be her birthday celebration, but no one had wished her happy birthday for almost an hour. Her father, Richard Whitmore, was busy introducing investors to her stepsister, Victoria. Her fiancé, Ethan Carter, stood beside Victoria too closely, laughing at something Scarlett could not hear.
Once, Scarlett had been the shining heiress of the Whitmore family. Before the accident, before the surgeries, before the doctors said she might never walk again, her father had called her his miracle. Now he barely looked at her.
Victoria crossed the room with a sweet smile and venom in her eyes. 'Scarlett, dear, you look tired. Maybe you should go upstairs before the important guests arrive.'
Scarlett's fingers tightened around the wheel of her chair. 'Important guests? This is my birthday dinner.'
Victoria laughed softly. 'Is it? Father is announcing my appointment as acting director tonight. We did not want to upset you with business matters.'
Before Scarlett could reply, the room fell silent. The front doors opened, and a man in a black tailored suit stepped inside. Alexander Moretti had returned to New York. Every powerful man in the room stiffened. Every whisper died.
He was tall, cold, and dangerously calm. The Moretti name was spoken with fear in boardrooms and silence in courtrooms. They called him the Godfather of the Moretti Empire.
Alexander's dark eyes moved across the ballroom until they found Scarlett. For the first time that night, someone looked at her as if she mattered.
He walked directly toward her, ignoring Richard, Victoria, and Ethan. Then he stopped beside Scarlett's wheelchair and bowed slightly.
'Miss Whitmore,' he said, his voice low and steady. 'I have come to take you home.'
