Scarlett returned to New York changed.
The city noticed immediately.
She no longer avoided cameras. She no longer lowered her eyes when reporters shouted questions. She wore black at the courthouse, her mother's ring at her throat, and Alexander Moretti beside her like a shadow made of power.
Clara Evans' sworn statement was filed under seal. The reopened investigation into Isabella Whitmore's death began quietly, but quiet never lasted long in New York.
By noon, Evelyn knew.
She called Scarlett seventeen times.
Scarlett answered the eighteenth.
'You ungrateful little monster,' Evelyn hissed.
'Hello, Evelyn.'
'You think you can dig up the dead and rewrite history?'
Scarlett looked through the car window at the courthouse steps. 'No. I think the dead have been waiting for justice.'
Evelyn's breathing shook. 'Clara is a liar.'
'Then you will have no problem facing her in court.'
A pause.
Then Evelyn's voice turned icy. 'Your mother was weak too. She should have left quietly.'
Scarlett's blood turned to fire.
'Say that again when the cameras are on,' she said.
Evelyn ended the call.
Alexander watched Scarlett lower the phone. 'You are shaking.'
'I want to scream.'
'Then scream.'
'No.' Scarlett looked at the courthouse. 'I want to win more.'
Inside, Grace presented the first motions. Financial fraud. Misuse of trust funds. Demand for emergency asset freeze. Petition to reopen Isabella Whitmore's death investigation.
Richard appeared with his lawyers but would not meet Scarlett's eyes.
When the hearing ended, reporters swarmed.
'Miss Whitmore, are you accusing your stepmother of murder?'
Scarlett stopped.
Alexander's hand hovered near her shoulder.
She faced the cameras. 'I am saying my mother deserved the truth. And so do I.'
Her voice carried across the courthouse steps.
'No family name is powerful enough to bury murder forever.'
By evening, Evelyn Whitmore locked herself inside the estate.
And for the first time in fourteen years, Isabella Whitmore's name appeared on every headline.
