Evelyn Whitmore entered court wearing pearls.
Scarlett almost admired the audacity. Even facing charges tied to murder, fraud, conspiracy, and attempted harm, Evelyn dressed like a woman attending a charity luncheon.
Richard sat at a separate defense table. He looked at Scarlett once, then lowered his eyes.
Victor Hale was not present. His trial had been separated for security reasons, but his shadow filled the courtroom.
The prosecution began with Isabella Whitmore.
Clara Evans testified first. Her voice shook, but she did not break. She described the storm, the argument, Isabella alive on the balcony floor, Evelyn standing over her, Richard frozen in the doorway.
Evelyn's attorney attacked her memory, her settlement, her years of silence.
Clara looked at Scarlett before answering.
'I was a coward for fourteen years. That does not make what I saw untrue.'
Scarlett's throat tightened.
Then came the financial experts. The medical board investigator. Dr. Pierce, pale and disgraced, testified that Evelyn and Victor Hale pressured him to end Scarlett's advanced treatment and support the false competency narrative.
When Scarlett took the stand, the courtroom seemed to hold its breath.
The prosecutor asked her about the accident.
Scarlett described rain, headlights, the impossible feeling of pressing brakes that did not respond. She described waking in a hospital, learning her legs might never obey her again. She described her family slowly turning her room into a prison decorated with expensive curtains.
Evelyn watched without expression.
'Do you hate the defendant?' the prosecutor asked.
Scarlett looked at Evelyn.
'Yes,' she said.
A ripple moved through the courtroom.
Scarlett continued, 'But I am not here because I hate her. I am here because my mother loved me, my grandfather protected me, and the truth deserves a place stronger than fear.'
Alexander sat behind the prosecution table. Their eyes met.
For a moment, Scarlett felt steady.
Then Evelyn's attorney stood for cross-examination.
'Miss Whitmore,' he said smoothly, 'is it not true that your entire campaign against your family began only after you became romantically involved with Alexander Moretti?'
The courtroom shifted.
Scarlett knew then that Victor's secret had entered the trial.
