Scarlett opened her grandfather's letter after midnight. The Moretti mansion was silent except for the distant sound of rain against the windows. She sat beside the fireplace, the envelope resting on her lap like a piece of the past too heavy to hold.
My dearest Scarlett, the letter began.
By the second line, her eyes blurred.
William Whitmore had written that he feared Richard was being influenced by Evelyn and Victoria. He had suspected financial manipulation inside Whitmore Industries. He had transferred certain documents to Alexander Moretti because Alexander was the only man powerful enough to protect her if the family turned against her.
The final paragraph broke her completely.
You are not weak because your body changed. You are not less worthy because others failed to love you properly. The Whitmore legacy belongs to the strongest heart in this family, and that has always been yours.
Scarlett pressed the paper to her chest and cried silently.
A knock came at the open door.
Alexander stood there, holding a glass of water. He did not enter until she nodded.
'He believed in me,' Scarlett whispered.
'He was right.'
She gave a bitter laugh. 'You do not know me.'
'I know what people become when they are betrayed,' Alexander said. 'Some break. Some sharpen.'
Scarlett wiped her cheeks. 'And what did you become?'
His eyes darkened. 'Necessary.'
The answer frightened her, but it also steadied her. Alexander was not gentle in the ordinary way. He was not comforting like sunlight. He was shelter during a storm, dangerous to anyone who tried to tear it down.
Scarlett looked back at the letter. 'My grandfather said there are documents.'
Alexander nodded. 'Enough to prove your family has been stealing from your trust.'
Scarlett's tears stopped.
'Then we prove it,' she said.
For the first time, Alexander smiled faintly. 'Welcome back, Miss Whitmore.'
