The fracture between them was quiet.
Alexander did not leave. Scarlett did not ask him to. They still ate breakfast together, still discussed security, still reviewed legal updates late into the night. But something careful had returned to the space between them.
Scarlett hated it.
Love, she was learning, did not erase damage. Sometimes it gave damage a new place to hide.
Three days after the Moretti question entered court, Scarlett returned to therapy with a determination that frightened even Dr. Cross.
'You are pushing too hard,' Dr. Cross warned.
'I am fine.'
'That sentence has never once been useful in this room.'
Scarlett ignored her and gripped the bars.
One step. Then another. Her legs burned. Her back screamed. Sweat blurred her vision.
Alexander appeared in the doorway halfway through the session.
Scarlett saw him and immediately lost balance.
He moved, but stopped himself before reaching her. Dr. Cross caught her instead.
The restraint hurt more than if he had touched her.
'I can help,' Alexander said quietly.
Scarlett laughed bitterly. 'Can you? Or will I find out later what help cost?'
The words landed like a slap.
Alexander's face closed.
Dr. Cross excused herself with impressive speed.
Scarlett sat back in her chair, breathing hard. Regret came instantly, but pride held it behind her teeth.
Alexander stepped into the room. 'I deserve your anger. Not your cruelty.'
Her eyes filled. 'I know.'
'Then speak plainly.'
Scarlett looked at him through tears. 'I am afraid that I built my freedom inside your protection, and now everyone will say it was never mine.'
Alexander knelt before her. 'Then we separate them.'
'What?'
'Your company from mine. Your case from my resources. Your public image from my name. I will step back.'
Panic struck her. 'That is not what I want.'
'It may be what you need.'
Scarlett shook her head. 'Do not make decisions for me.'
'I am trying not to.'
They stared at each other, both wounded by love and history.
Finally, Scarlett whispered, 'I need to know who I am without you standing between me and the world.'
Alexander's eyes darkened with pain, but he nodded.
'Then I will stand behind you,' he said. 'Far enough that they see you. Close enough that you are never alone.'
