Charles Carter had built his reputation on respectability.
He wore conservative suits, donated to hospitals, chaired education boards, and spoke often about family values. That made the recording more devastating.
In it, Charles spoke clearly with Victor Hale about forcing Scarlett out of the merger path. He did not mention love, pity, or pressure. He mentioned numbers.
'If she signs, we win. If she breaks, we win faster.'
Ethan listened to the recording in Scarlett's office with his face gray.
He had brought his own attorneys and a resignation letter from Carter Holdings. He looked less like the man who betrayed her and more like someone finally meeting the true shape of his inheritance.
'I did not know he said that,' Ethan whispered.
Scarlett watched him carefully. 'But you knew enough.'
'Yes.'
The honesty did not heal anything, but it mattered.
By afternoon, Carter Holdings stock began falling. By evening, Charles Carter stepped down pending investigation. By midnight, prosecutors requested his communications with Richard and Victor Hale.
Ethan came to Scarlett before leaving.
'I am going to testify,' he said.
'Against your father?'
'Against all of them. Including myself, if necessary.'
Scarlett nodded. 'That is the first brave thing I have seen you do.'
Pain crossed his face. 'Too late.'
'Yes,' she said softly. 'But still brave.'
Ethan looked at her for a long moment. 'Does he make you happy?'
Scarlett did not ask who.
'Alexander does not make my life easy,' she replied. 'He makes it honest.'
Ethan smiled sadly. 'Then he gave you what I could not.'
After Ethan left, Scarlett stood between her parallel bars in the private therapy room attached to her office. She had insisted it be built beside the boardroom, not hidden away like a shameful secret.
One step. Two.
Her phone vibrated.
Alexander: I saw the news. Carter is finished.
Scarlett typed back: I did it without you.
His reply came a moment later.
I know. That is why I am proud.
Scarlett smiled through sudden tears.
Distance, she realized, did not always mean abandonment. Sometimes it meant trust.
