Ethan Carter wrote before leaving New York.
The letter arrived at Scarlett's office with no dramatic delivery, no expensive gift, no attempt to reopen the past. Just an envelope and his handwriting.
Scarlett waited until evening to read it.
Alexander noticed the letter on her desk but said nothing. He had never been jealous of Ethan in any ordinary way. His anger toward him had always been simpler: Ethan had failed to protect what he claimed to love.
The letter was brief.
Scarlett, I am leaving for Seattle to rebuild the Carter company under court supervision. I do not expect forgiveness. I only want to say that testifying was not bravery compared to what you did. I hope one day I become someone who would not have failed you. Be happy. You earned it before any of us knew how to value it. Ethan.
Scarlett read it twice.
Then she folded it carefully.
'Are you all right?' Alexander asked.
'Yes.'
'Do you believe him?'
Scarlett thought about the boy she had loved, the man who had betrayed her, and the witness who had finally told the truth.
'I believe he wants to become better,' she said. 'That is not the same as undoing harm.'
Alexander nodded.
'Does it bother you?' she asked.
'That he wrote?'
'That part of me is sad.'
Alexander came to stand beside her. 'No.'
'No?'
'I do not need you to hate everyone who hurt you in order to know you love me.'
Scarlett looked up at him, moved by the quiet certainty.
The next morning, she sent Ethan a reply.
Build something honest. Goodbye, Ethan.
No love. No bitterness. No open door.
Just goodbye.
That afternoon, Scarlett stood alone in the therapy room and walked six steps with her cane.
Not because of Ethan.
Not because of Alexander.
Because goodbye, she was learning, was also a kind of movement.
Some people left as wounds.
Some left as lessons.
And some, finally, left.
