The following morning, Chicago woke beneath gray skies and steady rain. Traffic crawled through downtown while businessmen hurried toward glass towers, unaware that somewhere among them, one woman had already decided to erase herself from their world.
Chiara Rossi hadn't slept.
She sat inside her studio watching the last embers die inside the incinerator. The gifts Vincenzo had given her over ten years had become nothing more than ashes.
Surprisingly, she didn't regret it.
She only regretted waiting so long.
Her assistant, Matteo, quietly entered carrying two cups of coffee.
"You should eat something," he said carefully.
"Later."
"You haven't slept."
"I won't die from one night without sleep."
Matteo hesitated before speaking again.
"Is this because of the Don?"
Chiara looked at him calmly.
"There is no Don anymore."
"Only a man I should have stopped believing in years ago."
Matteo had worked beside her for nearly five years.
He knew enough to recognize that whatever had happened could never be repaired.
"What do you need me to do?"
"Everything we've prepared for emergencies."
"Every identity?"
"Every one."
"Every account?"
"Close them."
"Every safehouse?"
"Burn them."
Matteo stared at her in disbelief.
"You're serious."
"I've never been more serious."
Without another question, he nodded.
"I'll begin immediately."
As soon as he left, Chiara walked toward the hidden room beneath her studio.
Few people knew it existed.
Behind a movable bookshelf, a reinforced steel door opened into a command center filled with computers, surveillance monitors, encrypted communication equipment, and hundreds of carefully organized files.
This wasn't an artist's workspace.
This was the nerve center that had quietly protected the Russo empire for years.
Every enemy organization.
Every corrupt politician.
Every compromised police officer.
Every hidden financial transaction.
She knew them all.
Vincenzo often joked that she remembered more about his empire than he did.
Neither of them had realized how dangerous that fact truly was.
Chiara sat before the largest monitor and inserted a security key.
The screen immediately displayed dozens of classified folders.
"Operation Black Swan."
"Project Orion."
"European Assets."
"Eastern Routes."
"Private Vaults."
Years of intelligence filled the screen.
She slowly began deleting everything connected to herself.
One file after another disappeared forever.
Not the information.
Only the evidence that she had ever collected it.
If anyone searched later, it would appear that Chiara Rossi had never existed inside the Russo organization.
It took nearly four hours.
When she finally finished, only one folder remained.
PERSONAL.
Inside were photographs spanning ten years.
None had ever been shown publicly.
Vincenzo standing beside a fireplace reading reports.
Laughing over burnt pasta during one disastrous dinner.
Sleeping peacefully after forty-eight exhausting hours.
Looking completely human.
Completely ordinary.
Chiara stared at the photographs for several long moments.
Then she selected every file.
Delete.
The computer requested confirmation.
She didn't hesitate.
"Confirmed."
Within seconds...
Ten years disappeared.
Across the city, Vincenzo Russo sat inside the executive conference room overlooking Chicago's skyline.
Around him, the heads of every Russo operation discussed security preparations for Katerina Petrov's arrival.
"The airport route has been secured," one captain reported.
"Russian security personnel will coordinate with ours," another added.
"Excellent," Vincenzo replied.
"No mistakes."
Everything appeared normal.
Yet something felt... different.
His attention wandered repeatedly.
Twice he found himself reaching for his phone before stopping.
"Don?"
"Yes?"
"Would you like us to proceed?"
"Of course."
He pushed the strange feeling aside.
Chiara was probably working.
She always disappeared for days whenever she focused on complicated assignments.
He thought nothing of it.
Meanwhile, inside her underground workspace, another encrypted call connected.
"Everything is prepared," Matteo reported.
"Your passports."
"Your offshore accounts."
"Transportation."
"Three separate escape routes."
"Good."
"There's one more thing."
"What?"
"People have noticed increased security around the Russo estate."
"The engagement celebration begins tomorrow."
"I know."
She had no intention of attending.
Not even to say goodbye.
Instead, she opened another secure vault.
Inside rested dozens of forged passports bearing different names.
French.
Swiss.
Spanish.
Argentinian.
Each identity had taken years to perfect.
She selected only one.
A simple Italian passport.
Name: Chiara Bellini.
It wasn't entirely false.
Bellini had been her grandmother's maiden name.
"One last identity," she whispered.
"One last beginning."
Late that afternoon, Vincenzo unexpectedly arrived at her studio.
He entered without knocking, as he always had.
"Chiara?"
No answer.
The large painting room stood empty.
Fresh canvases rested against the walls.
Half-finished portraits waited beneath protective cloth.
Everything looked perfectly normal.
Yet somehow...
The place felt abandoned.
He noticed the smell first.
Smoke.
Walking toward the furnace room, he discovered black ash still coating the floor.
"What happened here?"
Matteo appeared from upstairs.
"Cleaning."
"Cleaning what?"
"Old belongings."
Vincenzo narrowed his eyes.
"Where is Chiara?"
"Working."
"On what?"
"I don't know."
That answer irritated him.
"She usually tells you everything."
"Not anymore."
The sentence lingered between them.
Vincenzo studied Matteo carefully.
"Is something wrong?"
"No, Don."
"Everything's fine."
He wasn't convinced.
Still, he had little time to investigate.
"Tell her I'll see her tomorrow night."
"If she wishes."
Vincenzo frowned.
"If she wishes?"
"That's what I said."
Without another word, Vincenzo turned and left.
Matteo waited until the front door closed before releasing a long breath.
"That was close," he muttered.
Hidden beneath the studio floor, Chiara had listened to the entire conversation through security monitors.
"You should've let me speak," Matteo said over the intercom.
"No."
"He would've recognized my voice immediately."
She watched Vincenzo's car disappear into traffic.
Even now...
He hadn't realized she was leaving.
To him, she remained exactly where she had always been.
Waiting.
Available.
Loyal.
That illusion would soon disappear.
As evening approached, another encrypted call arrived.
"Chiara."
"Papa."
"The plane will be ready in six days."
"Good."
"Your brothers insisted on coming themselves."
She smiled faintly.
"Tell them not to."
"This is my decision."
"They're worried."
"I know."
"So am I."
Her father's voice softened.
"You gave ten years to someone who never deserved them."
"Don't give him another day."
"I won't."
After ending the call, Chiara opened one final encrypted database.
Unlike the others...
This one contained every secret capable of destroying the Russo empire.
Bank accounts.
Political connections.
Hidden warehouses.
Names.
Dates.
Evidence.
Enough information to bring half of Chicago's criminal underworld crashing down.
She stared at the files for a long time.
Revenge would be easy.
One anonymous message...
And everything Vincenzo had built would collapse overnight.
Her finger hovered above the keyboard.
Then she slowly closed the laptop.
"Not yet," she whispered.
"I'm leaving because I choose myself."
"Not because I want revenge."
Outside, the rain finally stopped.
Far across the city, preparations continued for the arrival of Don Vincenzo Russo's future bride.
Inside a hidden studio, however, another countdown had already begun.
Six days remained.
Six days until Chiara Rossi disappeared forever.
And when the seventh day arrived...
Chicago's most powerful Don would discover that losing a loyal woman was far more dangerous than making an enemy.
