Three days remained.
Chicago continued celebrating the Russo-Petrov alliance, but beneath the city's glamorous surface, Chiara Rossi was quietly erasing every trace of her existence.
Before sunrise, she arrived at one of her oldest safehouses near the Chicago River.
The warehouse looked abandoned from the outside.
Inside, however, years of carefully hidden equipment filled every corner.
Forged passports.
Encrypted laptops.
Communication devices.
Emergency cash.
Weapons she hoped she would never need again.
Matteo waited beside several sealed containers.
"Everything's packed," he reported.
"Anything connected to Chiara Rossi is inside these crates."
"Destroy it all."
"Every photograph?"
"Every file."
"Every fingerprint sample."
"Every signature."
"Everything."
Matteo hesitated.
"After today... there'll be almost nothing proving you ever existed."
"That's the point."
He nodded silently and activated the industrial furnace.
One by one, years of carefully collected records disappeared into the flames.
When the last passport burned, Matteo looked toward her.
"Who will you become now?"
Chiara smiled faintly.
"Someone who belongs to herself."
Across the city, Vincenzo Russo was already immersed in another day of meetings.
The Petrov alliance had attracted new investors and opened opportunities across Europe.
Every hour brought another negotiation.
"The Moscow contracts are ready," one advisor announced.
"Excellent."
"Eastern shipping routes?"
"Already approved."
"Good."
Everything appeared to be moving perfectly.
Yet an unexpected irritation lingered in the back of his mind.
Chiara still hadn't contacted him.
That wasn't like her.
He picked up his phone.
"Call Matteo."
Seconds later, his trusted captain connected the line.
"Where's Chiara?"
"Working."
"Still?"
"She's finishing several private commissions."
"Tell her I expect a report tonight."
"I'll let her know."
Again, Matteo never intended to deliver the message.
Meanwhile, Chiara visited one final location.
A quiet cemetery on the northern edge of the city.
She stood before a modest marble headstone.
"Mama," she whispered.
"I'm finally going home."
Her mother had died when Chiara was twelve.
Chicago had always reminded her of loss.
Italy still held the memories of happiness.
"I stayed here because I thought I'd found a family."
"I was wrong."
She placed fresh white lilies beside the grave.
"This time... I'll choose myself."
A cold breeze swept through the cemetery as she quietly walked away.
By afternoon, preparations for her disappearance entered their final stage.
Inside another secure apartment, Matteo spread several maps across a table.
"Route One crosses into Canada."
"Too predictable," Chiara replied.
"Route Two?"
"Private airfield in Indiana."
"Possible."
"Route Three?"
"Direct extraction through your father's people."
"That's the one."
"Understood."
Matteo carefully destroyed the remaining maps.
"I've never asked before," he said.
"Why did you stay with him for so long?"
Chiara looked out the window.
"Because I confused loyalty with love."
"And because every time I wanted to leave..."
"He gave me just enough hope to stay."
"Until now."
"Until now."
That evening, Vincenzo finally decided to visit her studio personally.
He expected to find her buried beneath unfinished paintings as usual.
Instead...
The building was locked.
Every light remained off.
He frowned.
"Strange."
Using the security key she'd given him years earlier, he entered.
Silence greeted him.
The easels stood empty.
Paintbrushes had been neatly organized.
Half-finished canvases were gone.
"Chiara?"
No answer.
He walked through every room.
Bedroom.
Kitchen.
Workshop.
Nothing.
The place looked less like a studio...
And more like someone preparing to move.
His expression darkened.
"Where are you?"
He called again.
Voicemail.
For reasons he couldn't explain, unease settled in his chest.
Not fear.
Just... absence.
As if something essential had quietly disappeared.
He contacted his security chief.
"Find Chiara."
"Immediately, Don?"
"Yes."
"She isn't answering."
"Understood."
Within minutes, Russo security began checking her usual locations.
The art gallery.
Private storage units.
Several cafés she occasionally visited.
Nothing.
No one had seen her.
Meanwhile, Chiara watched everything unfold through one final encrypted monitor.
Security teams leaving headquarters.
Vehicles spreading across the city.
Phone calls multiplying.
"He's looking already," Matteo observed.
"Not for me."
"For his weapon."
"There's a difference."
Still...
A small part of her wondered whether that distinction mattered anymore.
Late that night, another secure call arrived from Italy.
"Chiara," her father said warmly.
"Everything is prepared."
"Tomorrow evening our people will be waiting."
"Thank you, Papa."
"Are you frightened?"
She thought carefully.
"No."
"Just tired."
"Then come home and rest."
"You've carried someone else's empire long enough."
His words nearly brought tears to her eyes.
No expectations.
No conditions.
Just family.
Exactly what she'd been searching for all these years.
Across town, Vincenzo stood alone inside his penthouse.
He poured himself another glass of whiskey but barely touched it.
His eyes wandered toward the balcony where Chiara often stood watching the skyline.
For ten years...
She had simply been there.
Reliable.
Steady.
Constant.
He had never once considered the possibility that she might leave.
"She'll come back," he muttered.
"She always does."
Yet somehow...
The apartment felt unusually empty.
The following morning, Matteo handed Chiara a small envelope.
"What's this?"
"Your last Chicago address."
"You'll never need it again."
She looked at the key resting inside.
The tiny apartment where she'd spent so many lonely nights.
The place where she'd waited for Vincenzo's calls.
Waited for birthdays.
Anniversaries.
Promises that never came.
Without hesitation, she placed the key on the table.
"Someone else can have it."
"I'm done waiting."
Outside, a black SUV slowly passed the building.
Neither Chiara nor Matteo noticed.
Inside sat one of Vincenzo's surveillance teams.
"No movement," the driver reported.
"Continue watching," came the reply.
Hours passed.
Still nothing.
By sunset, the surveillance vehicle quietly departed.
Only minutes later, Chiara exited through a hidden underground tunnel beneath the warehouse.
She disappeared into another waiting vehicle without anyone seeing her.
One day remained.
Tomorrow, Chiara Rossi would officially cease to exist.
And when Don Vincenzo Russo finally realized the truth...
Chicago's most powerful man would discover that some people don't leave loudly.
They simply vanish.
Leaving behind only silence... and regret.
