Italy welcomed Chiara with golden morning sunlight stretching across endless vineyards and rolling green hills.
The peaceful countryside felt like another world compared to Chicago's towering skyline and constant danger.
For the first time in years, she heard birds instead of sirens.
The convoy of black luxury vehicles moved along a winding private road toward an enormous estate hidden behind ancient cypress trees.
As the gates slowly opened, Chiara stared at the breathtaking villa beyond them.
Nothing had changed.
The stone walls, the marble fountain in the courtyard, and the centuries-old olive trees looked exactly as they had when she was a child.
"Welcome home, Signorina," several household staff greeted together.
She smiled politely.
It felt strange hearing that title again.
For ten years she had been known only as Chiara Rossi, the quiet artist from Chicago.
Here, she was something entirely different.
She was the daughter of one of Italy's oldest and most influential families.
Her father, Alessandro Bellini, placed a comforting hand on her shoulder.
"No business today," he said warmly.
"Today, you're simply my daughter."
Chiara nodded.
"I've missed this place."
"It missed you too."
Inside the villa, familiar memories surrounded her.
Family portraits.
Hand-painted ceilings.
The scent of fresh bread drifting from the kitchen.
Everything reminded her of the life she had abandoned after her mother's death.
Back then, she'd insisted on leaving Italy.
She had wanted independence.
Adventure.
A future of her own.
Instead, she had found Vincenzo Russo.
And she had spent ten years building someone else's empire.
Now she intended to build her own life.
Not long after arriving, two men hurried into the entrance hall.
"Chiara!"
Before she could react, both wrapped her in a tight embrace.
"Marco... Luca..."
Her older brothers refused to let go.
"You disappeared for ten years," Marco complained.
"We almost forgot what you looked like," Luca joked.
"Liar," Chiara laughed softly.
"You called every birthday."
"Because Papa made us."
"That's not true," Alessandro interrupted with a smile.
"You both missed your sister terribly."
The brothers exchanged embarrassed looks.
For several minutes, they simply sat together talking.
No one mentioned Chicago.
No one mentioned Vincenzo.
Instead, they spoke about family vineyards, local festivals, and childhood memories.
It felt wonderfully ordinary.
Thousands of miles away, ordinary was the last word anyone would use inside Russo Headquarters.
"Still nothing?" Vincenzo asked coldly.
"Nothing, Don."
"Airport surveillance?"
"No matches."
"Private ports?"
"Nothing."
"Hospitals?"
"Nothing."
The security chief looked increasingly uncomfortable.
"It's as if she planned to disappear years ago."
Vincenzo remained silent.
Deep down...
He already knew that was exactly what she'd done.
He simply hadn't noticed.
Another advisor entered carrying several financial reports.
"We've discovered additional losses."
"How much?"
"Nearly forty percent of our encrypted intelligence network has gone offline."
"Can it be restored?"
"Only if Chiara returns."
That answer irritated him more than he cared to admit.
"Find another specialist."
"We've contacted everyone in Europe and America."
"No one comes close to her abilities."
Silence settled over the conference room.
For the first time since taking control of the Russo Family, Vincenzo realized there was one person he couldn't replace.
Meanwhile, Chiara spent the afternoon walking through the family vineyards.
Warm sunlight touched the rows of grapevines while workers greeted her with genuine smiles.
"You've grown into your mother," one elderly groundskeeper said.
"She loved these fields."
Chiara looked across the hills.
"I remember she used to bring us here every harvest."
"She'd be proud you've come home."
Those simple words reached her heart more deeply than she expected.
No one here cared about her intelligence skills.
Or her forged masterpieces.
Or the dangerous missions she'd completed.
They cared only that she was home.
That evening, Alessandro invited her into his private study.
Unlike Vincenzo's modern office, this room overflowed with history.
Ancient books.
Oil paintings.
Old maps.
Family photographs.
"Sit," her father said gently.
"There's something we should discuss."
Chiara nodded.
"You've inherited your mother's estate."
"I know."
"I've never touched it."
"Exactly."
He opened a leather folder.
"It's time you did."
Inside were documents detailing vineyards, wineries, historic properties, and investment companies spread across Europe.
The inheritance was enormous.
"This... belongs to me?"
"Half belongs to you."
"The other half will remain protected until you're ready."
Chiara looked stunned.
"I spent years risking my life for someone else's fortune..."
"When my own family had already given me everything I needed."
Alessandro smiled sadly.
"Sometimes we travel far away before realizing home was enough."
Across the Atlantic, Vincenzo finally lost his patience.
"Bring Matteo in."
"Immediately."
Within an hour, Matteo was escorted into Russo Headquarters.
"Where is she?" Vincenzo asked directly.
"I don't know."
"Don't lie to me."
"I'm not."
"You worked beside her every day."
"Then you know exactly how capable she is."
Matteo met the Don's eyes without fear.
"If Chiara didn't want to be found..."
"No one will find her."
The confidence in his voice only fueled Vincenzo's frustration.
"She'll contact someone eventually."
"Maybe."
"Maybe not."
"She burned every bridge before leaving."
"Including you."
Those final words echoed through the room.
For a brief moment, Vincenzo found himself speechless.
Burned every bridge.
Including him.
Back in Italy, Chiara stood alone on the villa's balcony overlooking the moonlit countryside.
The breeze carried the scent of lavender and olive trees.
It was peaceful.
Quiet.
Safe.
Her phone vibrated once.
An encrypted message from an anonymous source.
"Russo Family searching aggressively."
"No confirmed leads."
She deleted the message immediately.
"Let them search," she whispered.
"They're looking for someone who no longer exists."
She slipped the phone into her pocket and looked toward the stars.
For years she'd believed freedom meant standing beside the most powerful man in Chicago.
Now she finally understood.
Freedom wasn't belonging to someone powerful.
Freedom was belonging to herself.
But unknown to Chiara...
Vincenzo Russo had reached the same conclusion about one thing.
He no longer believed she had simply left.
She had escaped.
And for the first time in his life...
The Don who ruled Chicago decided he would cross oceans if necessary.
Because losing Chiara Rossi had become the only battle he could no longer ignore.
