Chapter 22: What Trust Builds

Three months later.

Ridgemont Ice Academy.

Seven o'clock in the morning.

Some things never changed.

The smell of cold air and fresh ice.

The sound of blades cutting across the rink.

Coach Irina arriving before sunrise to terrify everyone equally.

And Dominic Hartley already being on the ice when Nadia arrived.

"You're early," he called.

"You're annoying."

"Good morning to you too."

"I liked you better when we weren't dating."

"Liar."

"Maybe."

She skated toward him.

The rink was quiet.

Almost empty.

Exactly how she liked it.

"Ready?" Dominic asked.

"Always."

"That's my line."

"I'm stealing it."

"Rude."

"You'll survive."

He smiled.

Not the small guarded smiles from the beginning.

A real one.

Open.

Easy.

Nadia still wasn't completely used to seeing it.

Not because it was rare anymore.

Because she liked it too much.

Training began.

The familiar rhythm returned instantly.

They moved together naturally now.

No hesitation.

No uncertainty.

Just trust.

The thing that had started everything.

The thing that had changed everything.

Later that morning, Irina approached with her notebook.

"You two are distracted," she announced.

"Good morning, Coach," Nadia replied.

"Distracted."

"By what?" Dominic asked.

"Each other."

"We're literally partners."

"Exactly."

Irina walked away.

"She's impossible," Nadia said.

"She's right, though."

"You're not helping."

"I know."

The rest of the day passed quickly.

Training.

Meetings.

Planning future competitions.

The life they'd worked so hard to build.

That evening, long after most skaters had gone home, Nadia stood alone at center ice.

The rink lights reflected beneath her skates.

Dominic joined her a moment later.

"What are you thinking about?" he asked.

"The first day."

"When you told me I was on your ice?"

"Exactly."

"You were very aggressive."

"You deserved it."

"Probably."

Nadia smiled.

"It's weird."

"What is?"

"If Irina hadn't forced us together, none of this would've happened."

"True."

"We wouldn't have won."

"Nope."

"We wouldn't be here."

"Definitely not."

A comfortable silence settled between them.

The kind built over months.

Over trust.

Over patience.

Over countless mornings on the ice.

"You know," Dominic said eventually,

"the funny thing is that everyone thinks winning the competition was the important part."

"Wasn't it?"

"Not really."

"Then what was?"

He reached for her hand.

The same hand he'd taken hundreds of times during training.

Yet this time felt different.

Because now there were no unspoken words left between them.

"Learning to trust you," he said.

Nadia smiled.

"Yeah."

"Yeah."

Together they looked out across the empty rink.

The place where everything had started.

The place where two stubborn athletes had accidentally built something neither expected.

Not just a partnership.

Not just a championship team.

Something stronger.

Something lasting.

The ice had known long before they did.

It always knew.

And in the end, it had been right.

Because the greatest thing Nadia and Dominic built together wasn't a program.

It wasn't a medal.

It wasn't even a victory.

It was trust.

And from trust, everything else followed.

— THE END —

You finished
