By the next morning, I had assembled a legal team.
I gave them every document my parents had hidden.
The forged trust agreement.
The property transfers.
The offshore payments.
The garage records.
And the recordings from my father's USB drive.
My attorneys worked through the night.
By sunrise, they had confirmed what I already suspected.
The Alvarez family trust was still legally mine.
The documents transferring it to Pilar were fraudulent.
More importantly, several Ferraro-controlled companies had benefited from assets that never belonged to them.
I looked at the final report.
“How much?” I asked.
My attorney closed the folder.
“Enough to bring down the entire Ferraro structure if the evidence holds.”
I nodded.
“Then don't warn them.”
That afternoon, I filed the first lawsuit.
It was not against Reed personally.
It was against the companies that had stolen from my family.
Within hours, financial news outlets began reporting the story.
Alvarez Estate Files Major Fraud Claim Against Ferraro Holdings.
The Ferraro family's stock value began to fall.
Reed called me seventeen times.
I didn't answer once.
Diana called next.
Then Pilar.
I ignored them all.
By evening, Reed came to my office.
Security called me.
“Mr. Ferraro is downstairs.”
I looked out the window.
He was standing in the lobby alone.
No assistants.
No lawyers.
No Pilar.
For the first time, he looked exactly like the man I had married.
Tired.
Frightened.
Human.
I went downstairs.
When Reed saw me, he immediately stepped forward.
“Fernanda.”
I stopped several feet away.
“Why are you here?”
“Because I need to explain.”
I almost laughed.
“You had eight years.”
His face tightened.
“I know.”
“Then explain.”
He lowered his voice.
“I knew about the money.”
“I knew my mother had been involved.”
“But I didn't know they planned to hurt your parents.”
I stared at him.
“You knew the car was unsafe.”
He looked away.
That was enough.
“You knew.”
His voice broke.
“I knew there was a problem with the car.”
“I didn't know it would happen that way.”
I felt something inside me go completely still.
“You knew.”
“And you still let me believe it was an accident.”
Reed closed his eyes.
“I was afraid.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“You were protecting yourself.”
He reached into his coat and pulled out a small envelope.
“There's something else.”
I didn't take it.
“What is it?”
“Proof.”
“Proof that Pilar was behind the plan.”
I stared at him.
“Why are you giving it to me now?”
Reed's eyes were filled with regret.
“Because I finally understand that protecting her destroyed everything.”
I took the envelope.
Inside was a series of messages between Pilar and Marcus Hale.
The final message was dated the day before my parents died.
Pilar had written one sentence.
“Make sure the Alvarez problem ends tomorrow.”
My fingers went cold.
Reed looked at me.
“I should have stopped her.”
I folded the message carefully.
“Yes, you should have.”
He stepped closer.
“Fernanda, I never stopped loving you.”
I looked directly into his eyes.
“You stopped loving me the moment you chose her.”
His face crumpled.
I turned away.
“We're finished, Reed.”
“Not because of the divorce.”
“Because I finally know who you are.”
I walked back toward the elevator.
Behind me, Reed didn't follow.
For the first time, he understood that money couldn't buy forgiveness.
And the Ferraro family had finally realized something else.
They hadn't created an enemy.
They had created an heir who knew exactly what had been stolen from her.
