Reed agreed to meet me the following afternoon.
We met in the same office where we had once celebrated our first business success together.
Now the room felt unfamiliar.
He sat across from me with his hands clasped tightly.
“You wanted the truth,” he said.
“This time, I won't hide anything.”
I looked at him.
“Start with my parents.”
Reed took a slow breath.
“Your father discovered the offshore accounts first.”
“He confronted me and threatened to expose everything.”
“I was terrified.”
“Not because I would lose money.”
“Because I knew my mother's involvement would destroy the Ferraro family.”
I said nothing.
He continued.
“Pilar had already been working with my mother.”
“They wanted control of your family's trust.”
“I knew they were pressuring your parents.”
“I also knew about the damaged car.”
My chest tightened.
“And you still let them drive it.”
Reed closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
The single word was almost unbearable.
“Why?”
“Because I thought they would only be frightened.”
“I never believed they would die.”
I stared at him.
“You knew there was a risk.”
“Yes.”
“And you chose yourself.”
He lowered his head.
“Yes.”
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
Eight years of grief suddenly had a shape.
It wasn't an accident.
It wasn't fate.
It was a choice.
Reed had made his choice.
Then he said something unexpected.
“After the crash, I wanted to confess.”
I looked at him.
“But Pilar stopped me.”
“She told me that if I went to the police, your life would be destroyed too.”
I laughed bitterly.
“You used me as an excuse to protect yourself.”
He nodded.
“I did.”
“Then why marry me?”
Reed looked at me for a long time.
“Because I loved you.”
I shook my head.
“You don't get to call that love.”
He wiped his face.
“I know.”
“I loved you and still chose cowardice.”
Silence settled between us.
Then Reed placed a folder on the table.
“Everything is in here.”
“My statements.”
“The original account records.”
“My communications with Pilar.”
“Everything I know about the night your parents died.”
I didn't touch the folder.
“What do you want from me?”
He shook his head.
“Nothing.”
“You deserve justice.”
“Even if it destroys me.”
I finally picked up the folder.
“It already destroyed me.”
“You just didn't see it.”
Reed looked down.
“I'm sorry.”
I stood.
“I know.”
I walked toward the door.
Behind me, he said my name one last time.
“Fernanda.”
I stopped but didn't turn around.
“I hope one day you can be happy.”
I closed my eyes.
“I am.”
Then I walked away.
That night, Reed's confession was delivered to the authorities.
The investigation moved forward without me.
For the first time, I didn't need to fight for the truth.
The truth had finally chosen to stand on its own.
And whatever happened to Reed Ferraro next would no longer be my burden.
