Night settled over Winter Moon.
The pack was quieter than usual.
After Finn's testimony, everyone understood one thing.
The conflict between Winter Moon and Ash Fang wasn't as simple as they had believed.
Someone had carefully planted lies for years.
Inside the Alpha House, Jaxon stood alone on the balcony overlooking the village.
Lanterns glowed beneath the moonlight.
Children had finally gone to sleep.
Only the patrol guards remained awake.
'You're thinking about her again,' Drax said.
'I'm thinking about this war.'
'Liar.'
Jaxon sighed.
'You've become very annoying.'
'Only because you're pretending this has nothing to do with our mate.'
Before Jaxon could answer, he caught a familiar scent.
Rain.
Wildflowers.
And cedar.
He turned.
Sable stood quietly near the balcony entrance.
"Couldn't sleep either?" she asked.
"Apparently not."
"Mind if I join you?"
"It's your choice."
She walked beside him until they stood shoulder to shoulder.
For several moments, neither of them spoke.
The silence wasn't awkward anymore.
It had become... comfortable.
"Your village is beautiful at night," Sable said softly.
"It wasn't always like this."
"What changed?"
"Hope."
She looked toward him.
"You're serious."
"Completely."
"People fight harder when they believe tomorrow will be better than today."
"I only gave them a reason to believe."
Sable smiled faintly.
"You're different from every Alpha I've met."
"Is that a compliment?"
"Don't let it go to your head."
He chuckled quietly.
The sound surprised both of them.
Sable raised an eyebrow.
"You actually laugh?"
"Sometimes."
"Your pack made it sound like you forgot how."
"Maybe they exaggerated."
"I don't think they did."
For the first time in years...
Jaxon laughed again.
Not because someone expected him to.
Not because he forced himself.
It simply happened.
'It's been a while,' Drax whispered.
'Too long.'
Sable noticed the change in his expression.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"You're smiling again."
"Am I?"
"You are."
The realization caught him off guard.
He quickly looked toward the mountains.
"Don't get used to it."
"Too late."
Another comfortable silence settled between them.
Eventually Sable spoke again.
"Can I ask you something personal?"
"Depends."
"Do you ever regret becoming Alpha?"
Jaxon thought carefully before answering.
"Every single day."
Sable blinked.
"Really?"
"Being Alpha means every mistake costs someone else."
"Every life lost... every family broken..."
"You carry all of it."
"Then why keep doing it?"
"Because someone has to."
"Running away was never an option."
She nodded slowly.
"I understand that feeling."
"Do you?"
"After my parents died, I became responsible for my younger cousins."
"I trained as a warrior because someone had to protect them."
"Even when I was terrified."
Jaxon looked at her differently.
He wasn't seeing an enemy anymore.
He was seeing someone who understood responsibility.
Someone who carried invisible scars.
'She's stronger than she looks,' Drax said.
'I know.'
'You're in trouble.'
'Meaning?'
'You're starting to admire her.'
Jaxon didn't answer.
Because his wolf was right.
At that exact moment, Sable suddenly grabbed her chest.
"Ah..."
"Sable?"
She stumbled backward.
Jaxon caught her before she could fall.
The instant his hand touched hers...
A powerful silver glow burst between them.
Energy rippled through the air.
Both of them gasped.
For one brief second...
They saw flashes.
A battlefield.
A forest.
A little girl laughing.
A young boy training with a wooden sword.
Memories.
Not their own.
The light vanished as suddenly as it had appeared.
Both of them pulled apart in shock.
"What... was that?" Sable whispered.
Jaxon stared at his own hand.
His heartbeat was racing.
'The mate bond...' Drax said quietly.
'It's getting stronger.'
"Did you see those images?" Sable asked.
"Yes."
"I don't understand."
"Neither do I."
He lied.
He understood perfectly.
The Moon Goddess was strengthening their connection.
Soon...
Hiding the truth would become impossible.
But before he could say anything...
A loud explosion echoed from the eastern side of the village.
Flames shot into the night sky.
"Alpha!"
A guard's desperate voice rang through the darkness.
"The eastern warehouse is on fire!"
Jaxon and Sable exchanged one look.
Without another word...
Both of them sprinted toward the flames.
