The expedition departed before sunrise.
A cold mist blanketed the valley surrounding Crimson Keep.
Six riders left through the eastern gate without ceremony.
There were no banners.
No soldiers marching behind them.
Only silence.
Jaxon rode at the front beside Jasper.
Ethan and Cedric followed close behind.
Sable remained near the rear, carefully studying every trail they crossed.
Their final companion waited several miles ahead.
"How much farther?" Ethan asked.
"An hour," Cedric replied.
"Magnus never leaves his cabin."
"If we're lucky, he'll still be alive."
Jasper smiled faintly.
"Luck has never favored us."
No one argued.
By midday they reached the edge of the Crescent Mountains.
Snow covered the higher cliffs despite the warm season below.
A small wooden cabin stood beside a frozen lake.
Smoke curled lazily from its chimney.
"He's home," Cedric said.
The cabin door opened before anyone knocked.
An old man with long silver hair stepped outside.
His beard reached nearly to his chest.
Although old, his amber eyes remained sharp.
"You're late," he said.
Everyone stopped.
"You were expecting us?" Jaxon asked.
"No."
"I was expecting whoever came looking for the Crown."
Magnus looked directly at Sable.
"The Moon Goddess certainly enjoys surprises."
Sable frowned.
"Do I know you?"
"No."
"But I've been waiting for you since before you were born."
A chill ran through everyone.
"Come inside," Magnus said.
"The mountains have ears."
Inside the cabin, ancient maps and wolf carvings covered every wall.
Magnus poured hot tea before sitting beside the fire.
"Tell me everything."
Nearly an hour passed as Jaxon explained the attacks, the Order of the Eclipse, the stolen map, and the Lunar Crown.
Magnus listened without interruption.
When Jaxon finished, the old guide closed his eyes.
"I feared this day would come."
"Then the Crown is real?" Ethan asked.
"Very real."
"But people misunderstand what it truly is."
Sable leaned forward.
"Explain."
"The Lunar Crown isn't a weapon."
"It doesn't create power."
"It reveals it."
"Only someone accepted by the Moon Goddess can awaken it."
Jasper folded his arms.
"Meaning anyone else who wears it gains nothing?"
"Exactly."
"Then why are so many people willing to kill for it?"
Magnus looked toward the fire.
"Because they don't know that."
"Legends grow more dangerous with every generation."
Cedric quietly nodded.
"I've heard that before."
"There's something else," Magnus continued.
"The Crown never chooses a single Alpha."
Everyone looked at him.
"What do you mean?" Jaxon asked.
"It chooses balance."
"Strength alone is never enough."
"Neither is wisdom."
"Nor compassion."
"The Crown awakens only when two souls walk the path together."
Silence filled the cabin.
Magnus slowly turned toward Jaxon and Sable.
"One carries leadership."
"The other carries sacrifice."
"Only together can the Temple be opened completely."
Sable's heartbeat quickened.
"You're talking about us."
"I am."
Jaxon exchanged a glance with Sable.
'He knows about the bond,' Drax whispered.
'Apparently everyone does except us.'
Magnus laughed softly.
"Your wolf has quite the sense of humor."
Jaxon froze.
"...You heard him?"
"Not heard."
"Felt."
"I've walked beside wolves longer than either of you have been alive."
"The bond between you shines like moonlight."
"It's impossible to miss."
Just then...
A deep horn echoed through the mountains.
Magnus stood instantly.
"They're here."
"Who?" Ethan asked.
"The Order."
Outside...
Dark figures emerged across the snowy ridge.
Dozens of them.
Each wore a silver crescent emblem across black cloaks.
Every warrior carried identical weapons.
At their center rode a woman dressed in white armor.
Her silver hair flowed behind her despite the wind.
She removed her hood and smiled calmly.
"Magnus," she called.
"You've protected the secret long enough."
"Hand over the second map."
Magnus stepped outside the cabin.
"I buried that map years ago."
"Then we'll simply take the chosen pair instead."
Her silver eyes settled on Jaxon and Sable.
"The Temple will open for them..."
"Whether they come willingly..."
"Or in chains."
