I stared at the photograph until my eyes began to ache.
Hudson and Tatum.
Standing outside a hotel.
Three months before my wedding.
I wanted to believe there was an innocent explanation.
But after everything that had happened, I couldn't afford to be naive anymore.
I called Hudson.
For the first time since I had blocked him, I unblocked his number.
He answered almost immediately.
"Briar?"
His voice was filled with surprise.
"Did you meet Tatum recently?"
Silence.
That silence told me enough.
"Hudson."
"I can explain."
"Then explain."
He exhaled slowly.
"The photograph is real."
"I was at that hotel with Tatum."
My fingers tightened around the phone.
"Why?"
"Because she told me she had something important to discuss."
"What?"
Another pause.
"She told me she was pregnant."
My heart stopped.
"That was three months before our wedding," I whispered.
"Yes."
"And you believed her?"
"At first."
"Then what happened?"
"She admitted she was lying."
I closed my eyes.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I thought it would destroy you for nothing."
A bitter laugh escaped me.
"You mean you thought keeping another secret from me was better?"
"I was afraid you'd leave."
"And instead you let me marry you while hiding it."
Hudson said nothing.
I looked again at the photograph.
"Why was she at the hotel with you?"
"She said she wanted to convince me that you were too sensitive to handle our relationship."
"She kept telling me that you would eventually leave me anyway."
I felt sick.
Tatum had spent years planting doubt between us.
But there was still something missing.
"Why would she suddenly tell me about this now?"
"Because she's desperate."
"She knows I'm going to expose her."
I frowned.
"Expose her for what?"
Hudson's voice became quieter.
"The fake suicide attempt wasn't the worst thing she did."
My pulse quickened.
"What else?"
"She manipulated the wedding prank from the beginning."
"She contacted the wedding planner herself."
"She canceled your makeup appointment."
"She arranged for the hotel staff to tell you the wrong information."
"She even paid someone to record you at the airport."
I sat completely still.
The prank hadn't been spontaneous.
It had been planned.
Every humiliating moment had been calculated.
"And you knew?" I asked.
"I knew about the prank."
"I didn't know how far she would take it."
My jaw tightened.
"You watched me suffer and did nothing."
"I thought you'd laugh once you realized it was a joke."
"I didn't."
"I know."
His voice cracked.
"That's what I regret most."
I didn't answer.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
"Briar, there's another reason Tatum wanted you out of the country."
"What reason?"
"She knew about your London transfer."
"How?"
"She saw the offer on your laptop when she stayed at our house."
I stood up abruptly.
"She knew I was leaving?"
"Yes."
"And she was afraid that if you moved to London, you'd become independent."
I stared at the city lights outside my window.
Suddenly, the entire timeline became clear.
Tatum hadn't just wanted my wedding.
She wanted my life.
My fiancé.
My family.
My career.
And when she realized I was finally preparing to leave, she decided to destroy me before I could escape.
My phone buzzed again.
Another message from Tatum.
[Ask Hudson what happened the night he first found out about your pregnancy.]
My stomach dropped.
I looked at Hudson.
"What happened that night?"
He didn't answer.
"Hudson?"
His silence stretched for several seconds.
Then he finally whispered:
"I didn't find out about your pregnancy at the hospital."
"I knew before the wedding."
The room seemed to spin.
"How long did you know?"
"Almost two weeks."
My fingers went numb.
"And you never told me."
"I was going to."
"When?"
He couldn't answer.
I hung up.
For seven years, I had believed Hudson simply failed to choose me when it mattered.
Now I realized something far worse.
He had known exactly what he was risking.
And he chose to stay silent anyway.
