From that day onward, James kept the promise he had made to Catherine.
Every afternoon after work, he visited Laura.
He never arrived empty-handed.
Sometimes he brought storybooks.
Sometimes coloring pencils.
Sometimes nothing but his time.
At first, Laura remained distant.
She politely thanked him but stayed close to Catherine.
James never forced her.
He knew trust wasn't something he deserved.
It was something he had to earn.
One evening, he found Laura sitting alone in the park outside the apartment.
"What are you drawing?" he asked gently.
Laura looked up before showing him her notebook.
It was another family picture.
This time, there were three people.
"You added me," James whispered.
"Mom said people can change if they truly mean it," Laura replied.
"I'm giving you one more chance."
James smiled through tears.
"Thank you."
"I won't waste it."
Meanwhile, Catherine's condition continued to worsen.
She became weaker after every chemotherapy session.
Some mornings, she couldn't even stand without support.
Still, she smiled every time Laura entered the room.
"Mom," Laura said one day.
"When I grow up, I'll become a doctor."
"Then I'll make sure no one gets sick anymore."
Catherine gently hugged her daughter.
"That sounds wonderful."
"I'll always be proud of you."
A few days later, Dr. Emily Carter called James.
"Mr. Frost," she said quietly.
"Mrs. Frost's condition has deteriorated rapidly."
"You should come."
James rushed to the hospital immediately.
When he entered Catherine's room, she was sitting beside the window watching the sunset.
"You're here," she said softly.
"How are you feeling?"
"Tired."
"Very tired."
James pulled a chair beside her bed.
"There has to be another treatment," he said desperately.
"I'll find the best doctors in the world."
"Money isn't a problem."
Catherine smiled sadly.
"Some things can't be bought."
"Not even with all your money."
James lowered his head.
"I know."
"I just... don't want to lose you."
"You already did," Catherine answered gently.
"A long time ago."
Her words hurt.
But they were true.
After a long silence, Catherine handed him a sealed envelope.
"What's this?"
"Letters for Laura."
"One for every birthday until she turns eighteen."
"If I'm not here..."
"Please give them to her."
James carefully accepted the envelope.
"I promise."
"There's another document inside," Catherine continued.
"It's the trust fund and everything I've managed to save."
"It's not much."
"It doesn't have to be," James interrupted.
"I'll take care of her."
"I'll give her everything she deserves."
"I know you will."
For the first time in years, Catherine truly believed him.
James had finally become the father Laura needed.
Unfortunately...
He had become that man far too late.
Later that evening, Laura arrived at the hospital carrying a small bouquet of wildflowers.
"Mom!" she smiled.
"These are for you."
Catherine accepted them with trembling hands.
"They're beautiful."
"Daddy helped me pick them," Laura said proudly.
Catherine looked toward James.
He quietly nodded.
For a brief moment...
The three of them looked like the family they could have been.
No arguments.
No resentment.
Only silence.
And the painful awareness that time was running out.
As night fell, Catherine watched Laura fall asleep beside her hospital bed.
James covered their daughter with a blanket.
"Thank you," Catherine whispered.
"For finally keeping your promise."
James squeezed her hand gently.
"I only wish I'd started sooner."
Catherine closed her eyes.
"So do I."
Outside the hospital window, the city lights sparkled peacefully.
Inside the room...
Every heartbeat felt more precious than the last.
