The Heart Chamber trembled as Malakar stepped through the shattered doorway.
Dark energy swirled around him like living smoke.
Behind him, the sounds of battle echoed faintly from outside the temple.
Emma immediately understood why Queen Elara looked afraid.
For the first time since meeting him, Malakar no longer seemed merely dangerous.
He seemed unstoppable.
'We finally meet properly,' Malakar said.
His crimson eyes shifted between Emma and the ancient queen.
'A touching reunion.'
'You should not be here,' Elara replied.
'And yet I am.'
The rogue leader slowly approached the giant crystal at the center of the chamber.
The crack running through its core continued spreading.
Dark energy leaked from within like black fire.
'Centuries,' Malakar said quietly.
'For centuries I waited for this moment.'
'To destroy the world?' Emma asked.
He laughed.
'You still don't understand.'
'Then explain it.'
'The world is already changing. The seal was never permanent.'
He placed a hand against the crystal.
'What your ancestors called darkness was power.'
'Power that killed thousands,' Elara snapped.
'Power that could save millions.'
'By enslaving them?'
'By making them stronger.'
The chamber shook violently.
The crack widened.
Emma could feel something moving beneath the crystal.
Something ancient.
Something hungry.
'Enough,' Elara said.
'The choice belongs to Emma.'
Malakar smiled.
'Exactly.'
His crimson gaze settled on her.
'And I wonder what she will choose.'
'Stop talking like I'm not standing here,' Emma muttered.
Neither seemed to hear her.
'The seal is broken,' Elara continued.
'Someone must replace it.'
'Meaning someone sacrifices themselves,' Emma said.
'Yes.'
Silence followed.
The reality of those words settled heavily inside her.
To save the world, someone had to become the new seal.
Forever.
'There has to be another way.'
'There isn't,' Elara whispered.
'There never was.'
Emma looked toward the massive crystal.
Then toward Malakar.
Then toward the queen.
Neither side offered a solution she liked.
'You expect me to give up my life?'
'I expect you to choose,' Elara replied sadly.
A powerful explosion echoed from outside.
The chamber doors burst open again.
Kael staggered inside.
Blood covered his armor.
Several wounds marked his face and arms.
'Kael!' Emma rushed toward him.
'I'm fine,' he said immediately.
'You are absolutely not fine.'
'I've been worse.'
'That is not reassuring.'
Despite everything, a faint smile appeared on his face.
Then he noticed the crystal.
And the crack.
His expression immediately darkened.
'How much time?'
'Minutes,' Elara replied.
Kael nodded grimly.
'Then we end this now.'
'You can't stop what's coming,' Malakar said.
'Watch me.'
Silver energy exploded around Kael.
The king charged.
Malakar met him halfway.
The impact shook the entire chamber.
Power collided with power.
Darkness clashed against moonlight.
The battle was unlike anything Emma had ever seen.
Neither man fought like ordinary warriors.
Each strike sent shockwaves through the room.
Ancient symbols lit up across the floor.
The giant crystal trembled.
'Emma!' Elara shouted.
'The choice!'
Emma looked toward the Heart Crystal.
Dark energy continued pouring from the crack.
She could feel it spreading.
Growing stronger.
Soon it would consume everything.
'There has to be another option.'
The moonstone around her neck suddenly blazed.
Brighter than ever before.
Silver light flooded the chamber.
A new vision appeared.
Not from the past.
From the future.
Emma saw herself becoming the seal.
Alone.
Trapped forever.
The world survived.
But she disappeared.
Then another vision appeared.
She saw Malakar winning.
Darkness covering kingdoms.
Cities burning.
Countless deaths.
Then a third vision appeared.
A possibility no one had mentioned.
Kael standing beside her.
Both touching the crystal together.
Moonlight and shadow merging.
The crack healing.
The seal restored.
Neither dying.
Emma's eyes widened.
'Elara!'
'What is it?'
'You were wrong.'
'Impossible.'
'No. There is another way.'
The queen froze.
'What did you see?'
'The prophecy.'
Emma finally understood.
'The Moon Bearer and the Shadow King.'
'Together they shall open the path of light or darkness,' Elara whispered.
'Exactly.'
The prophecy had never been about one person.
It required both of them.
'Kael!' Emma shouted.
The king turned during the middle of combat.
'What?'
'The crystal!'
'What about it?'
'We do it together.'
For a moment confusion crossed his face.
Then understanding appeared.
'Emma, no.'
'Trust me.'
'Emma—'
'Trust me!'
Their eyes met.
The bond between them pulsed.
Finally Kael nodded.
The two of them sprinted toward the crystal.
'Stop them!' Malakar roared.
Dark energy exploded from his hands.
But Elara stepped forward.
For the first time, the ancient queen unleashed her power.
Silver fire filled the chamber.
'Not this time,' she said.
Malakar slammed into the barrier she created.
Emma reached the crystal.
Kael arrived beside her.
The crack had grown enormous.
Darkness poured through it.
'What do we do?' he asked.
'Honestly?'
'Yes?'
'I have absolutely no idea.'
Kael laughed despite the situation.
'Fair enough.'
Together they placed their hands against the crystal.
The moonstone erupted.
Silver light flooded the chamber.
Kael's eyes blazed like stars.
Ancient magic awakened.
The entire temple shook.
The prophecy finally fulfilled itself.
Moonlight flowed from Emma.
Shadow flowed from Kael.
The two forces merged.
Not fighting.
Not destroying.
Balancing.
The crack began closing.
'No!' Malakar screamed.
Darkness surged toward the crystal.
But it was too late.
The seal healed.
Light spread through every corner of the chamber.
The darkness retreated.
The giant crystal became whole once more.
A final pulse of energy exploded outward.
Then everything went silent.
The battle was over.
Emma slowly opened her eyes.
The Heart Crystal floated peacefully before her.
The crack was gone.
The darkness had vanished.
Across the chamber, Malakar lay defeated.
His crimson eyes had lost their power.
'Impossible,' he whispered.
'No,' Elara replied softly.
'You simply chose the wrong path.'
The rogue leader looked toward Emma one final time.
Then his body dissolved into shadow and disappeared.
The threat was gone.
Forever.
Outside, sunlight suddenly poured through the temple windows.
The crimson moon had vanished.
A new day had begun.
Elara smiled.
'You did what none of us could.'
'We did,' Emma corrected.
She looked toward Kael.
The king was staring at her with an expression she couldn't quite describe.
Relief.
Admiration.
Something deeper.
The ancient queen's form began fading.
'My time is ending,' Elara said.
'Wait,' Emma replied.
'Will we see you again?'
The queen smiled gently.
'No.'
'Then thank you.'
'No, Emma Carter.'
Elara's gaze shifted between Emma and Kael.
'Thank you.'
Moments later she disappeared into silver light.
The chamber grew quiet.
For several seconds neither Emma nor Kael spoke.
Finally Kael stepped closer.
'So.'
'So.'
'The world didn't end.'
'Always a positive outcome.'
A smile appeared on his face.
'And apparently you're still my chosen mate.'
Emma laughed.
'You really picked the worst possible moment to bring that up.'
'It seemed important.'
'Maybe a little.'
Outside, the people of Ravenwood were already celebrating.
The kingdom had survived.
The prophecy had ended.
The darkness had been defeated.
And beneath the light of a new dawn, Emma realized something surprising.
For the first time in her life, she had finally found where she belonged.
Not in London.
Not in the ordinary world.
But here.
In Ravenwood.
Beside the Shadow King.
And as the first rays of sunlight illuminated the ancient temple, a new chapter of their story quietly began.
