After visiting a client that afternoon, I didn’t go straight back to the office.
Lily’s school was only two blocks away. Tonight was the annual family charity gala, and I had promised her I’d be there.
I wasn’t early, but I wasn’t late. A check-in line had already formed outside the hall.
The two parents in front of me were chatting quietly.
“Graham isn’t here yet? Usually he and Sloane are the first to arrive.”
“They went in early to help with the auction items. Honestly, the first time I saw them together, I thought Sloane was Mrs. Mercer.”
The other woman laughed.
“Who wouldn’t? PTA meetings, sports days, Christmas concerts—they show up together every time. With Lily between them, they look like a perfect family of three.”
“But I heard Graham’s engaged.”
“For years, right? But have you ever actually seen the fiancée?”
“No.”
“Neither have I. Some people say it’s just for show. If they were really getting married, why would she never come to school events? Sloane’s the one on the emergency contact form.”
There was no malice in their voices. They were simply discussing something everyone around them seemed to accept as normal.
Graham, Sloane, and Lily were the family this circle recognized.
I was nothing more than a rumor.
When Graham and I got engaged four years ago, I had chosen a photo of us to post online.
The moment he saw it, he pressed his thumb against my phone screen and darkened it.
“Don’t make it public yet.”
“Why?”
“Lily just accepted that we’re together. She doesn’t need everyone asking her about it. It’s better for her if we keep things low-key.”
Later, at a company dinner, someone noticed my ring and asked about it. I had barely started introducing Graham when he interrupted.
“We’re in a stable relationship.”
On the drive home, I asked why he couldn’t simply say fiancé.
His hands remained steady on the steering wheel.
“Once we’re married, it will be public. There’s no need to put pressure on Lily with labels right now.”
I believed him.
I deleted the engagement photo, stopped bringing him to work events, and never once introduced myself at Lily’s school.
I thought I was protecting a child who needed time to adjust.
Only now did I understand that Graham had simply needed me to remain invisible.
The line moved forward.
Lily’s laughter drifted from the entrance of the hall.
I looked up and saw her standing between Graham and Sloane. Graham was smoothing the hem of her dress while Sloane bent down to straighten a clip in her hair.
Their movements were practiced. Comfortable. Familiar.
A staff member smiled and handed them their badges.
“Mr. Mercer, this one is yours. Lily, here’s your student volunteer badge. And Ms. Avery, your guardian badge.”
Sloane accepted the blue badge marked Guardian without hesitation.
No one questioned her.
No one asked for identification.
Everyone already knew exactly who she was.
Then Graham noticed me.
Surprise flashed across his face.
“Nora? What are you doing here?”
“I promised Lily I’d come.”
His expression tightened, as though my presence had interrupted an arrangement I had never been told about.
When it was my turn to check in, the staff member searched the parent list twice.
“May I have your name?”
“Nora Bell.”
She searched her tablet, then checked the printed list.
“Are you one of the student’s parents?”
I paused before answering.
“I’m Graham Mercer’s fiancée.”
The woman blinked. Her eyes instinctively moved toward Graham, Sloane, and Lily.
She searched again.
After nearly half a minute, she finally found my name beneath Graham’s entry.
She picked up a white visitor sticker and wrote a single line on it.
Guest of Mr. Mercer.
Beside me, Sloane’s blue Guardian badge stood out beneath the bright hall lights.
One was a guardian.
One was a guest.
The school system was more honest than our engagement.
More honest than Graham.
I took the sticker and pressed it against my chest.
For the first time in four years, I didn’t feel embarrassed.
If Graham had already decided where I belonged, then I no longer needed to argue with him about it.
I only needed to leave.
The staff member gave me a polite smile.
“That’s right—you’re Lily’s father’s guest.”
