Damian's brain went white noise. "Hemorrhaged?" The nurse shoved past him. A file in her hand. Racing toward OR 3. "She's in surgery right now. We've been looking for family for almost an hour. A whole family and not one of you picked up the phone?" Damian stumbled after her. Outside OR 3

the red surgical light was still on.

For several seconds, Damian simply stood there.

His mouth opened, but no sound came out.

Hemorrhaged.

Shock.

Heart nearly stopped.

The nurse's words kept circling through his head, each one hitting harder than the last.

That was impossible.

Vanessa was strong.

Vanessa never got sick.

Vanessa was the one who handled everything.

When they were children and Willow caught a cold, Vanessa fetched medicine. When Dad injured his back, Vanessa learned how to change the dressings. When Mom forgot an appointment, Vanessa rearranged her own schedule and drove her there.

Vanessa was always fine.

She had to be.

Damian grabbed the nurse's arm. "Wait. What do you mean you couldn't reach anyone? My parents are right down the hall."

The nurse looked at his hand until he released her.

"We called the emergency contacts listed on the patient's original admission record. No one answered. Then, before she was taken into surgery, Ms. Sinclair specifically requested that her emergency contact information be changed."

Damian's throat tightened.

"Changed to who?"

"Her husband. Felix Carter."

Something cold settled in Damian's stomach.

Felix.

The husband none of them particularly liked because he treated Vanessa as though she were precious.

Mom always said Felix spoiled her too much.

Dad complained that Vanessa had become less obedient after marrying him.

Damian had laughed about it more than once.

"She thinks marrying money means she doesn't need us anymore."

Now Damian stared at the closed operating-room doors and suddenly remembered how Vanessa had looked earlier that evening.

Nine months pregnant.

Carrying a canvas tote.

Standing silently while he shoved the bakery address into her hand.

He had told her to hurry.

Hadn't he?

His face went pale.

He had sent his nine-month-pregnant sister across downtown in rush-hour traffic because Willow wanted cinnamon rolls.

And when Vanessa finally brought them back, he had called to complain that they were cold.

Damian pulled out his phone with shaking fingers.

His call history made him feel sick.

Vanessa.

11:47 p.m.

Outgoing call.

Two minutes, fourteen seconds.

He could hear his own voice from that conversation perfectly.

"The damn pastries were freezing by the time you got here. You trying to make Willow sick?"

Then Vanessa's answer.

"Then throw them out."

He had thought she was being difficult.

He had demanded that she come back and peel an apple.

She had said she was tired.

And he had gotten angry.

Damian pressed both hands against his face.

The operating-room doors stayed closed.

He turned and ran.

By the time he reached room 601, he was breathing so hard that everyone looked at him.

Mom was sitting beside Willow, spooning chicken soup into her mouth.

Dad was standing beside the bassinet.

Willow's newborn son slept peacefully beneath the cashmere blanket.

The blanket with the double blessing.

Mom frowned. "Why are you running? Did you find Vanessa? Tell her to come here. Willow needs—"

"Vanessa's in surgery."

The spoon slipped from Mom's hand.

It hit the floor with a metallic clatter.

"What?"

Damian couldn't look at her.

"She went into labor. She hemorrhaged."

Dad's smile vanished.

Willow's hand tightened around the blanket.

Mom stood so quickly that the chair scraped backward.

"That's impossible. I just saw her."

Damian looked up.

"When?"

"Earlier."

"How much earlier?"

Mom's lips parted.

She didn't answer.

Damian stared at her. Then his gaze dropped to the chair beside Willow's bed.

There was Vanessa's canvas tote.

Open.

Empty.

A tiny cream-colored baby onesie rested on Willow's bedside table.

Damian recognized it.

Vanessa had shown it to him weeks ago.

She had smiled then, holding the impossibly small outfit against her belly.

"Felix had these made. Look at the stitching. Isn't it adorable?"

He had barely looked up from his phone.

Now that same onesie was sitting beside Willow.

Damian's eyes slowly moved toward his mother.

"Why is Vanessa's baby's stuff here?"

Mom's face changed.

"Willow forgot her bag, so I borrowed a few things. Vanessa has plenty. Felix can buy more."

Damian stared at her.

"You went into Vanessa's room?"

"Yes."

"Was she awake?"

"Of course she was."

"Did she say anything?"

Mom hesitated.

"She said her stomach hurt, but she's nine months pregnant. Of course her stomach hurts."

The room went silent.

Damian felt something inside him drop.

"She told you she was hurting?"

Mom's expression became defensive. "Don't look at me like that. How was I supposed to know she was actually in labor? Vanessa has always had a high pain tolerance."

"You didn't ask?"

"Willow needed me!"

The words came automatically.

Too automatically.

Everyone heard it.

Even Mom seemed startled by herself.

Willow lowered her eyes.

Dad finally moved. He grabbed his coat.

"Enough. We'll go to the operating room."

Mom nodded quickly. "Yes. Yes, of course."

She reached for the bassinet.

Willow immediately caught her wrist.

"Mom, don't leave me alone."

Mom froze.

It lasted only a second.

But Damian saw it.

That instinctive hesitation.

Her daughter was fighting for her life down the hall, and Mom still hesitated because Willow asked her to stay.

Damian's stomach twisted.

"I'll stay with Willow," Dad said. "You two go."

Mom nodded.

Damian didn't argue.

He and Mom hurried toward OR 3.

Halfway there, Mom began crying.

"She'll be fine. Vanessa's always been strong."

Damian stopped walking.

Mom turned back. "What?"

"Can everyone stop saying that?"

His voice came out harsher than he intended.

"Stop saying she's strong like that means nothing can happen to her."

Mom stared at him.

Damian swallowed.

"Maybe that's why none of us ever helped her."

Mom's face crumpled.

They reached the operating room just as a doctor stepped outside.

His gown was marked with blood.

Mom rushed toward him.

"Doctor! I'm Vanessa's mother. How is she? How's the baby?"

The doctor looked exhausted.

"The baby was delivered by emergency C-section."

Mom covered her mouth.

"And Vanessa?"

"We controlled the bleeding, but she lost a dangerous amount of blood. Her condition is still critical."

Damian gripped the back of a chair.

"Can we see her?"

"Not yet."

The doctor looked between them.

"Where were you?"

Neither answered.

His expression hardened.

"She arrived in the OR without family support while suffering a severe obstetric emergency. We had difficulty reaching her listed contacts. Fortunately, she remained conscious long enough to provide authorization and update her emergency contact."

Mom whispered, "Her husband."

"Yes. Mr. Carter has been contacted."

Mom immediately said, "He's overseas."

"Not anymore."

Damian looked up.

The doctor continued, "He informed us that he's already arranged emergency transport and is coming here."

Mom's face went completely white.

Everyone in the family knew Felix Carter.

More importantly, everyone knew how Felix felt about Vanessa.

He might forgive Vanessa for almost anything.

He would not forgive someone who hurt her.

Damian sat down heavily.

For the first time that night, he thought about what would happen after Vanessa survived.

Not if.

After.

Because he couldn't allow himself to imagine the alternative.

Would she come home with them?

Would she laugh at Mom's complaints?

Would she still answer when Damian called?

Would she still remember everyone's birthdays and buy Dad's medication and solve every little family emergency before anyone else even noticed it?

A horrible realization settled over him.

Vanessa had spent years making herself useful enough to earn a place in their family.

And they had mistaken that usefulness for obligation.

They had never asked what it cost her.

The doors opened again.

A nurse pushed a small hospital bassinet into the hallway.

Inside was a newborn baby.

Tiny.

Wrapped in an ordinary hospital blanket.

No hand-knitted cashmere.

No embroidered initials.

No double blessing.

Mom made a broken sound and stepped forward.

"My grandbaby..."

The nurse immediately moved between her and the bassinet.

"I'm sorry. Only the authorized guardian can take the baby."

Mom blinked.

"I'm the grandmother."

"The patient's chart says Mr. Felix Carter is the only authorized family contact."

"But I'm her mother."

The nurse's expression didn't change.

"Ms. Sinclair specifically requested that no medical information or access be given to anyone else without her consent."

Mom looked as if someone had struck her.

Damian closed his eyes.

Vanessa had finally done what none of them ever believed she would.

She had stopped treating them like family.

Hours passed.

The hospital slowly woke around them.

Sunlight appeared through the windows.

Mom sat rigidly outside intensive care.

Damian didn't move.

Dad eventually came down after Willow fell asleep.

Nobody spoke.

At 8:17 a.m., the elevator doors opened.

A tall man in a dark coat stepped out.

Felix.

His hair was disheveled. Snowmelt still darkened the shoulders of his coat. His eyes were bloodshot, and there was something frighteningly controlled about the way he walked.

He didn't greet them.

Didn't ask about Willow.

Didn't even slow down.

He walked directly to the nurses' station.

"Felix Carter. Vanessa Sinclair's husband."

The nurse stood immediately.

"Mr. Carter. We've been expecting you."

"My wife."

Two words.

Nothing else.

The nurse quietly explained Vanessa's condition.

Felix listened without interrupting.

When she finished, his hand tightened around the edge of the counter.

His knuckles went white.

"And my child?"

"Stable. Healthy. Being monitored."

Felix shut his eyes.

His shoulders dropped for one brief second.

Then he turned.

His gaze landed on Vanessa's family.

Mom stood.

"Felix—"

"Don't."

His voice was quiet.

Mom stopped.

Felix walked toward them.

"I arranged a private suite. A nurse. Transportation. Everything Vanessa could possibly need."

No one answered.

"She told me she wanted to stay with you because she wanted her mother with her when she gave birth."

Mom began crying.

"Felix, I didn't know—"

"Where was she?"

Mom stared at him.

"What?"

"When she started bleeding. Where was my wife?"

Damian forced himself to answer.

"Shared ward."

Felix's expression didn't change.

That somehow made it worse.

"Why?"

Dad spoke this time.

"There was a misunderstanding with the rooms."

Felix looked at him.

"A misunderstanding?"

Damian lowered his head.

"We gave Vanessa's private room to Willow."

Felix went perfectly still.

Mom rushed to explain.

"Willow was having a C-section. She was scared, and Vanessa said she didn't mind—"

"Did she say that?"

Mom stopped.

Felix's eyes moved to the tote sitting beside Damian's chair.

Vanessa's tote.

Damian had brought it from room 601 without thinking.

Felix recognized it immediately.

"Why do you have my wife's bag?"

No one answered.

Felix bent down.

He opened it.

Empty.

His face changed.

"Where are the baby's clothes?"

Mom's lips trembled.

"Willow needed—"

Felix laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

"Of course she did."

He straightened.

"Vanessa nearly died without even having clothes for her own baby because Willow needed them."

Mom sobbed. "I didn't know she was going into labor."

"You didn't need to know."

Felix's voice finally cracked.

"She was your daughter."

Silence.

"She shouldn't have needed to be dying before you treated her like she mattered."

Mom covered her face.

Felix turned away.

The ICU doors opened.

A nurse stepped out.

"Mr. Carter?"

Felix spun around.

"She's awake."

His entire body seemed to lose strength for a second.

"Can I see her?"

"Yes."

Mom stepped forward immediately.

"Can we—"

The nurse shook her head.

"The patient has requested her husband only."

Mom froze.

Felix followed the nurse without looking back.

Inside the ICU room, Vanessa looked almost colorless against the white sheets.

Machines surrounded her.

Felix stopped in the doorway.

For one terrible moment, he couldn't move.

Vanessa slowly opened her eyes.

She saw him.

Her lips moved.

"You came back."

Felix crossed the room in three steps.

He took her hand carefully, as though she might break.

Then he lowered his forehead against her fingers.

Vanessa felt something warm fall onto her skin.

Felix was crying.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"The baby?"

"Safe."

Her whole body relaxed.

A tiny smile touched her lips.

"Good."

Felix raised his head.

"Vanessa, why didn't you tell me?"

She looked toward the window.

Morning light had begun spilling across the floor.

"Because I wanted them to choose me once."

Felix said nothing.

"Just once," she whispered.

"I thought when I had my baby, Mom would stay with me. Dad would worry about me. Damian would finally treat me like his sister instead of someone who could fix everything for him."

A tear slid toward her ear.

"I thought if I gave them one more chance, maybe I'd finally understand what it felt like to be Willow."

Felix tightened his grip around her hand.

"And now?"

Vanessa closed her eyes.

She remembered the blanket.

The private-room card.

The bakery.

Her mother's hands emptying her baby's bag while she whispered that she hurt.

The gurney racing past room 601 while everyone surrounded Willow.

When Vanessa opened her eyes again, there was no anger left in them.

Only exhaustion.

"Now I don't want to be Willow anymore."

Felix brushed the hair away from her forehead.

"What do you want?"

Vanessa looked at him.

"I want to go home with you."

Outside the ICU doors, her mother was still crying.

Her father sat silently beside Damian.

For the first time in their lives, they were waiting for Vanessa.

But this time, Vanessa wasn't waiting for them.

You finished
