For several seconds, nobody moved.
Tessa stood beside the table with tears streaming down her face.
Graham looked at the laboratory report as though the words might rearrange themselves if he stared long enough.
They didn't.
He wasn't Tessa's biological father.
The man who had raised her, protected her, and called her his daughter for thirty-two years was not her biological father.
“Marcus,” Graham whispered.
Tessa looked at him.
“You think he's my father?”
Graham couldn't answer.
Evelyn slowly nodded.
“He is.”
Tessa sank into the nearest chair.
“My whole life was a lie.”
I moved closer but didn't touch her.
This was her truth to process.
Then Hart spoke.
“The report also confirms something important. Owen's results are completely consistent with the Bellamy line through Graham.”
Tessa looked up.
“So Owen really is Adrian's son.”
“Yes.”
A bitter smile appeared on her face.
“And my mother accused Nora of cheating because she was terrified someone would test the family.”
Nobody contradicted her.
Tessa picked up the forged paternity report from the evidence bag.
She studied it for several seconds.
“This says Owen isn't Adrian's son.”
She looked at me.
“But the real test says he is.”
“Exactly.”
Her fingers began to tremble.
“Then Mom knew that if the real test happened, the attention would turn toward me.”
Graham suddenly stood.
“We're going home.”
Hart stopped him.
“Not yet.”
“Why?”
“Because Celeste knows the results are coming. If she realizes we have enough evidence against her, she may destroy whatever remains.”
I remembered the missing trust documents.
“She's already doing that.”
Officer Brooks entered the room carrying another evidence box.
“We recovered this from the Bellamy house.”
She placed a laptop on the table.
“It was hidden behind a false panel in the study.”
Graham stared at it.
“Whose is it?”
“We don't know yet.”
Hart connected it to a forensic device.
Within minutes, the screen displayed a collection of encrypted files.
One folder was labeled with a single date.
The date of Tessa's birth.
Tessa leaned forward.
“Open it.”
Hart shook her head.
“We'll make a forensic copy first.”
After several minutes, the folder was preserved.
Inside were photographs, bank statements, hospital records, and scanned letters.
The first photograph showed Celeste leaving the hospital thirty-two years ago.
She was carrying a newborn baby.
Beside her stood Marcus.
The second photograph showed Graham arriving at the same hospital hours later.
Then came a document that made everyone silent.
It was a revised birth certificate application.
Celeste had requested that Marcus's name be removed and Graham's name inserted as the father.
Tessa began crying again.
“She changed my birth records.”
Graham's face was full of shame.
“And I never knew.”
The next file was a financial statement.
It showed money transferred from Marcus's company shares into an account controlled by Celeste.
Hart stared at the numbers.
“This explains everything.”
“What?” I asked.
“Marcus didn't steal from the Bellamy family. Celeste stole from Marcus.”
Graham slowly sat down.
For thirty-two years, he had believed he had driven away a dishonest business partner.
The truth was worse.
He had helped Celeste destroy the man who was actually Tessa's father.
Then another file opened automatically.
It was a scanned letter from Marcus.
The final sentence read:
“If Celeste ever tries to destroy another innocent child to protect this lie, expose everything.”
I looked at Tessa.
Then at Graham.
The fake DNA test had been meant to destroy Owen.
Instead, it had finally opened the door to the truth.
But there was still one person who hadn't faced the evidence.
Adrian.
And I knew exactly where we needed to go next.
