We reached the airport just as Celeste's car disappeared into the departure lane.
Officer Brooks had already alerted airport security, but Hart warned us not to confront her ourselves.
“If she has the trust documents, let the authorities recover them,” Hart said.
Graham stood beside me, staring at the entrance.
“I never thought she would run.”
“People don't run when they have nothing to hide,” I said.
Tessa stood behind us, clutching Marcus's old photograph.
She hadn't spoken much since learning the truth.
Then her phone rang.
The caller was Celeste.
Tessa answered on speaker.
“Mom?”
Celeste's voice was strangely calm.
“Tessa, listen to me carefully. Everything I've done was to protect you.”
Tessa's eyes filled with tears.
“You changed my birth records.”
“I gave you a family.”
“You erased my father.”
Celeste went silent.
Graham stepped closer.
“And you lied to me for thirty-two years.”
Celeste's voice hardened.
“If you had known the truth, Graham, you would have abandoned us.”
“No,” Graham said quietly. “I would have chosen the truth.”
There was another silence.
Then Celeste said something that made all of us freeze.
“You don't understand what Marcus was going to expose.”
Hart immediately signaled for Tessa to keep her talking.
Tessa wiped her tears.
“Then tell me.”
Celeste laughed bitterly.
“It's too late.”
“Tell me anyway.”
For several seconds, we heard only airport announcements in the background.
Finally, Celeste spoke.
“Marcus discovered that the Bellamy restaurants weren't built entirely with Graham's money.”
Graham's face tightened.
“What does that mean?”
“The original capital came from Marcus.”
Tessa stared at the phone.
“Then why did you take it?”
“Because Marcus was going to leave me and take everything with him.”
Graham's voice became cold.
“So you stole his shares.”
“I protected what belonged to my children.”
I interrupted.
“Your children? Or Adrian?”
Celeste stopped speaking.
That hesitation told me everything.
Adrian hadn't merely helped hide the truth.
He had been protecting a financial arrangement that benefited him directly.
Officer Brooks received a message from airport security.
Celeste had been stopped at the private terminal.
She was carrying two locked briefcases.
Inside one was the missing Bellamy trust file.
Inside the other were original financial records dating back thirty-two years.
Graham closed his eyes.
“Those records could prove everything.”
Hart nodded.
“And they could also prove who received the money Marcus was owed.”
We were escorted to a secure interview room.
Celeste was brought in several minutes later.
She looked smaller than she had the night of her birthday.
But her eyes were still sharp.
She looked at me first.
“You ruined my family.”
I shook my head.
“You did that yourself.”
She turned toward Graham.
“I did what I had to do.”
Graham placed the DNA results on the table.
“You destroyed Owen's reputation because you were afraid of a blood test.”
Celeste looked at the report.
“I never intended for the child to suffer.”
“But you knew he would,” I said.
She didn't answer.
Officer Brooks opened the first briefcase.
The original trust agreement was inside.
The second contained payment ledgers, handwritten notes, and correspondence between Celeste and several financial intermediaries.
Hart examined one of the ledgers.
Then she looked up.
“Nora, you need to see this.”
The page showed a payment made eight years earlier.
The recipient wasn't Marcus's estate.
It wasn't Evelyn.
It was an account registered to Adrian Bellamy.
The money had been transferred the same week Marcus died.
I looked at Celeste.
She closed her eyes.
For the first time, she had nothing left to say.
