The flash drive contained exactly what Mara had promised.
A recorded meeting.
The date was six weeks before Celeste's birthday.
Celeste's voice came first.
“The report has to look authentic.”
A man's voice answered.
“It will. But once the real laboratory gets involved, they'll discover the truth.”
Celeste laughed softly.
“That won't happen. Nora will sign before she has the chance.”
Then Adrian spoke.
“And if she refuses?”
“Then we use Owen.”
My stomach turned.
Celeste continued.
“Everyone loves a child until they believe the child isn't theirs.”
Adrian remained silent.
Then he asked, “What about the livestream?”
“Tessa will handle it.”
Tessa's face went white.
She whispered, “I didn't know they were talking about me.”
The recording continued.
Celeste explained that the livestream would create enough public pressure to make me appear guilty before I could defend myself.
Then came the part that changed everything.
“Once Nora signs the waiver, Owen's trust interest can be transferred,” Celeste said.
“Adrian gets control until the boy turns eighteen.”
Graham slammed his hand onto the table.
“They planned to steal Owen's inheritance.”
Hart nodded.
“And because the trust was tied to the divorce agreement, they needed Nora's signature.”
Officer Brooks copied the recording into the official evidence system.
Then she looked at Adrian.
“You were present when this plan was made.”
Adrian's shoulders sagged.
“Yes.”
It was the first time he admitted it without trying to blame someone else.
Tessa turned toward him.
“And you still married Nora?”
Adrian didn't answer.
I did.
“Because he never intended to build a life with me.”
Adrian looked at me.
“That's not true.”
I shook my head.
“You just wanted me to produce a child, sign away my rights, and disappear.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“I loved you.”
“You loved the version of me that was useful to your family.”
That ended the argument.
Graham looked toward Officer Brooks.
“What happens now?”
“The evidence will be submitted to the prosecutor. Any charges will be determined after review.”
Celeste suddenly spoke.
“You think this makes you innocent, Nora?”
I looked at her.
“No.”
She smiled faintly.
“Good.”
I continued.
“It makes me free.”
Her smile disappeared.
I handed Hart the original divorce agreement.
“I want this formally rejected and replaced with a standard equitable settlement.”
Hart nodded.
“Already prepared.”
Graham looked at me.
“And the family trust?”
“Owen keeps his legal share,” Hart said. “Tessa's original share will also be restored if the court validates the documents.”
Tessa wiped her eyes.
“I don't want anything from my mother.”
Graham looked at her.
“It's not her money to give.”
The next morning, the story broke.
The original livestream was still circulating, but now the unedited footage was public too.
People saw the hidden cameras.
They saw the forged report.
They heard Adrian discussing the plan.
And they heard Celeste say exactly what she intended to do to Owen's inheritance.
The narrative changed overnight.
The woman they had called a cheating wife was now being recognized as the victim of an elaborate family scheme.
The preschool received instructions to release Owen only to authorized adults.
My employer contacted me and reopened the project they had suspended.
For the first time since the birthday dinner, I felt like I could breathe.
But there was one final message waiting on my phone.
It came from an unknown number.
“Celeste isn't the only one who knows what happened to Marcus.”
A second message followed.
“Ask Graham about the missing hospital record.”
I stared at the screen.
The truth had finally begun to surface.
But apparently, it still wasn't complete.
