I met Graham in a quiet private room at his law office that afternoon.
He arrived alone.
For the first time since I had known him, the powerful head of the Bellamy family looked completely uncertain.
He placed a sealed folder on the table.
“I found this in an old storage file,” he said.
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a copy of Tessa’s original birth registration.
The mother's name was Celeste Bellamy.
The father's name was Marcus Vale.
I recognized the name immediately.
Marcus Vale had been Graham's closest business partner thirty-two years ago.
He had disappeared from Lakehaven shortly after the Bellamy family restaurants began expanding.
“You knew him?” I asked.
Graham gave a bitter laugh.
“I trusted him with everything.”
He turned another page.
“When Tessa was born, Celeste told me the hospital had made a mistake with the paperwork. She said Marcus had only been listed because he helped arrange the delivery.”
“And you believed her?”
“For thirty-two years.”
His voice cracked on the last word.
I looked at the document again.
“Why would Celeste keep this?”
“Because she thought no one would ever look.”
I remembered the way Celeste had reacted when I demanded Tessa be tested against Graham.
She hadn't been worried about embarrassment.
She had been terrified of the result.
Graham leaned forward.
“There’s more.”
He pulled out another document.
It was a handwritten letter dated thirty-two years ago.
The handwriting was unmistakably Celeste's.
I read the first few lines.
My stomach turned.
Celeste had written that Marcus knew Tessa was his daughter, but she had promised him that Graham would never find out.
In exchange, Marcus had agreed to leave Lakehaven and never contact them again.
“Why did she do this?” I whispered.
Graham stared at the letter.
“Because Marcus owned half of the original restaurant company.”
I looked up.
He continued.
“If I discovered Tessa wasn't my daughter, the inheritance structure would have changed. Celeste would have lost control of several family assets.”
Suddenly, the fake paternity test made sense in a different way.
Celeste had spent decades protecting the Bellamy bloodline story.
Now she was willing to destroy Owen's reputation to keep that story intact.
“Did Adrian know?” I asked.
Graham didn't answer.
That silence was answer enough.
“You think he knew about Tessa?”
“I think Adrian knows more about his mother's secrets than either of us realizes.”
My phone vibrated.
Hart had sent me a message.
The bank had located the missing money.
The transfer from our joint investment account had not gone into Adrian's personal account.
It had gone to a private trust.
The beneficiary was listed as Owen Bennett.
I frowned.
“That doesn't make sense.”
Graham looked at me.
“What?”
I showed him the message.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then Graham asked, “Why would Adrian move your money into a trust for Owen?”
I didn't know.
But a terrible possibility formed in my mind.
Maybe the divorce wasn't about getting rid of me.
Maybe it was about gaining control of Owen's inheritance.
Before I could say anything, my phone rang.
It was the genetic laboratory.
“Ms. Bennett,” the technician said, “we need to inform you of an irregularity concerning one of the submitted samples.”
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Whose sample?”
There was a pause.
“Tessa Bellamy's.”
Graham stood immediately.
“What irregularity?” I asked.
The technician lowered his voice.
“The sample was properly sealed, but the genetic profile we're seeing does not appear consistent with the information provided on her registration documents.”
I looked at Graham.
His face had gone completely white.
“Are you saying she's not biologically related to the person listed as her father?”
“We can't release preliminary conclusions before the official report,” the technician said.
“But I strongly recommend that all authorized parties be present when the final results are opened.”
I ended the call.
Graham slowly sat back down.
Neither of us needed to say what we were thinking.
The Bellamy family wasn't just hiding a secret.
They had built their entire family history around one.
