I told Rowan everything.
He listened without interrupting.
That was how I knew he was furious.
When I finished, he stood by the window with both hands clenched.
"So my childhood medical records were used to select me for a forced breeding experiment."
The words sounded even worse aloud.
"According to Marcus."
"And Helena may have predicted our mate bond."
"Yes."
He turned.
"Do you think she created it?"
I hated that question.
"I don't know."
His face closed.
I walked toward him.
"Rowan."
"What if this isn't real?"
My wolf reacted immediately.
A sharp, offended growl inside my chest.
"She thinks that's stupid."
"Your wolf?"
"Yes."
"Mine too."
"Good."
He didn't smile.
I touched his hand.
"The bond awakened when we touched at the airport."
"After Helena had tracked our bloodlines for years."
"Prediction isn't creation."
"Marcus doesn't know what she did."
"No."
He looked down at our joined hands.
"I don't want you bound to me because someone decided we were useful together."
"Neither do I."
His fingers loosened.
I continued.
"But I liked you before I knew you were my mate."
He looked at me.
"I liked the annoying person sending me tea and staying awake during my insomnia."
"Annoying?"
"Extremely."
"I was charming."
"You called me babe in every sentence."
"I was committed."
I almost smiled.
"You cared about me when you thought I still looked like my old photo."
"Obviously."
"And I chose to keep talking to you even when I thought your photos were fake."
"That still hurts."
"You looked too good."
"Acceptable explanation."
His shoulders relaxed slightly.
"The bond may be biological," I said. "But everything we've done with it has been choice."
He was quiet.
Then he asked, "Do you regret kissing me?"
"No."
"Do you want me to stop courting you?"
"No."
"Do you want to complete the mate bond?"
I paused.
"Not yet."
He nodded immediately.
No disappointment weaponized against me.
No pressure.
Just acceptance.
That answered more than any laboratory report could.
I squeezed his hand.
"See?"
"What?"
"Choice."
His eyes softened.
The investigation into Moonwell Institute began that afternoon.
Officially, it was a fertility and reproductive health research foundation.
Unofficially, it had been receiving money through companies connected to Lucian Voss.
Adrian obtained a warrant.
The clinic was empty when Nightvale security entered.
Again.
Helena was always one step ahead.
But she had left records.
Maybe intentionally.
A file bearing my name sat on a desk.
Not Nessa Arden.
Nessa Lunaris.
Inside were photographs.
High school.
Training grounds.
My old body.
My weight-loss progress.
My university acceptance.
My flight reservation.
I felt violated.
"They watched me for years."
Rowan's face was terrifyingly calm.
"Yes."
"Did they know about Knox?"
"Probably."
We found screenshots from the game.
Knox's profile.
My profile.
Messages.
Then a report dated three months before university.
Subject N-L1 remains emotionally bonded to Stormridge heir proxy. Relationship unsuitable for projected Nightvale pairing.
I stared.
"They wanted me with you."
Rowan read the next line.
Intervention unnecessary. Stormridge subject has independently terminated attachment.
Knox had transferred me without Helena's help.
A note followed.
Unexpected opportunity: replacement account acquired by N-V1.
N-V1.
Rowan.
He looked sick.
"They were watching me too."
"They didn't arrange it."
"No."
Relief and horror mixed.
We kept reading.
N-V1 demonstrates spontaneous attachment exceeding projected parameters.
I looked at him.
"Spontaneous attachment."
"Very romantic."
Another report described our planned airport meeting.
No intervention recommended.
Allow natural mate recognition.
I closed the folder.
"That's enough."
Rowan didn't argue.
Adrian ordered every record seized.
Then an investigator found something in the basement.
A wall covered with genealogical charts.
Lunaris.
Nightvale.
Stormridge.
Silvercrest.
Dozens of future pairings.
Not only us.
Helena had spent decades trying to map fated bonds.
One chart had been crossed out repeatedly.
Rhea Lunaris.
Beside her name were several potential Alpha heirs.
Knox was one.
I stared.
"Knox?"
Rowan frowned.
"Apparently."
"But Elodie?"
"Not on this chart."
I called Rhea and told her.
Her response was immediate.
"If anyone tries to tell me Knox is my mate, I'm joining a convent."
I laughed despite everything.
Then Adrian called us into another room.
He held a small recorder.
"We found this in Helena's office."
The message was recent.
Helena's voice was calm.
"Congratulations, Nessa."
My skin crawled.
"If you're hearing this, Marcus has finally become useful."
Rowan's Alpha power flickered.
Helena continued.
"You will be tempted to believe your bond is artificial. It isn't."
I froze.
"I spent twenty years attempting to reproduce what the Moon Goddess creates naturally. I failed."
Rowan and I looked at each other.
"Your bond was predicted, not manufactured."
My chest loosened slightly.
Then Helena said:
"But prediction has value."
A pause.
"Because now I know exactly what happens when the strongest surviving Lunaris line bonds with the future Supreme Alpha."
The recording ended with one sentence.
"And soon, so will you."
Later, when the immediate crisis had passed, I forced myself to record what had happened and what I had learned from it. Lunaris had taught me that leadership was rarely a dramatic speech or a perfect decision. Most days it was listening longer than I wanted, asking one more question, admitting when I was uncertain, and refusing to let fear make choices for everyone else. I had once believed strength meant enduring anything without complaint. Now I understood that strength could also mean setting a boundary, asking for help, resting before exhaustion became damage, and allowing another person to disagree without treating disagreement as betrayal. That lesson mattered because I wanted the restored Pack to become safer than the one our enemies had destroyed, not merely more powerful.
