Silver gas filled the training hall.
My wolf recoiled.
Rowan staggered.
Adrian was already weakened.
Helena's guards wore respirators.
I dropped low, covering my mouth with my sleeve.
Not enough.
My muscles began burning.
Helena watched us clinically.
"Natural mate bonds strengthen under stress."
I wanted to punch her.
"You're insane."
"Possibly."
She pressed another control.
A transparent barrier dropped between Rowan and me.
"No!"
He hit the glass.
I crawled toward him.
The barrier was reinforced with silver mesh.
My skin burned when I touched it.
Helena's voice came through speakers.
"N-V1 displays expected protective aggression."
Rowan roared.
"Stop calling me that!"
His Alpha command slammed through the room.
Two guards stumbled despite their masks.
Helena smiled.
"Excellent."
I hated being observed.
Measured.
Reduced to reactions.
Then I remembered Seraphina's recording.
Lunaris power isn't blood you can bottle.
It chooses.
I stopped fighting the gas.
Not surrendering.
Listening.
My wolf was weak.
But the Pack bond was still there.
Far away.
Hundreds of Lunaris wolves.
Rhea.
Cassian.
Mom.
A thread of connection.
I reached for it.
Rhea felt me first.
A sharp burst of alarm answered.
Then Cassian.
The bond widened.
Helena's instruments started beeping.
She looked at the monitors.
"What?"
Golden light appeared beneath my skin.
Weak.
Then stronger.
The gas still hurt.
But I wasn't alone inside it.
Lunaris strength poured through the bond.
Not physical energy exactly.
Stability.
I stood.
Helena stared.
"Impossible."
I smiled through burning lungs.
"You keep saying that."
Across the barrier, Rowan understood.
He stopped attacking the glass.
Closed his eyes.
His Alpha power changed.
Instead of exploding outward, it focused.
Toward me.
The mate bond opened.
Warm cedar.
Citrus.
Moonlight.
I felt his fear.
His love.
His stubborn determination.
He felt mine.
No words.
Still, I understood.
Together.
Our powers met through the barrier.
Gold from Lunaris.
Silver-black from Nightvale.
The mesh began glowing.
Helena rushed toward the controls.
"No."
The barrier cracked.
One line.
Then another.
Rowan struck it once.
It shattered.
He crossed the distance and caught me before my knees gave out.
"Breathe."
"Trying."
He pulled his shirt over my nose.
"Very medical."
"Shut up."
Adrian shouted.
"Vent controls!"
I saw them.
Helena was already retreating.
I shifted partially.
Claws.
Eyes.
Enough.
I lunged toward the panel and tore through the emergency cover.
Pressed everything.
Alarms screamed.
Industrial vents activated.
The gas began clearing.
Nightvale security breached the outer doors.
Helena ran.
Rhea appeared with them.
I stared.
"What are you doing here?"
"Same thing you're doing."
"Being reckless?"
"Family tradition."
She chased Helena.
Cassian followed.
Rowan freed Adrian.
I wanted to chase too.
My legs disagreed.
Rowan caught me.
"No."
"Rhea—"
"Has Cassian."
"Helena—"
"Has nowhere to go."
He lifted me.
I glared.
"Put me down."
"You inhaled silver."
"I can walk."
"You almost fell."
"Minor detail."
He ignored me.
Adrian, despite being injured, laughed.
"She'll make an excellent Luna."
I looked at him.
"Do not start."
"Noted."
Outside, Helena was captured near the eastern gate.
Rhea had tackled her.
Apparently Keeper duties now included violent arrests.
Helena was dragged back in restraints.
She saw me in Rowan's arms.
Her expression wasn't defeated.
It was fascinated.
"The readings."
Nobody responded.
"Do you understand what you did?"
"Survived your kidnapping?"
"Your bond broke a silver resonance barrier."
Rowan's face hardened.
"We're not interested."
"You should be."
Helena looked at me.
"Lunaris Pack resonance fed into a Nightvale mate bond."
"So?"
"So nothing like it has ever been documented."
I leaned against Rowan.
"Then don't document it."
Her expression changed.
"What?"
"You heard me."
"That discovery could change medicine."
"Maybe."
"Bond disorders. Alpha instability. Infertility."
"Then researchers can study volunteers."
"You don't understand."
"I understand perfectly."
My voice hardened.
"You decided knowledge mattered more than consent."
Helena stared.
"That's why you failed."
For the first time, she had no answer.
Later, at the hospital, doctors confirmed the silver exposure had caused no permanent damage.
Rowan sat beside my bed.
His hand held mine.
"Your father?"
"Fine."
"Rhea?"
"Fine."
"Helena?"
"Very arrested."
"Good."
Silence.
Then Rowan said, "I thought I was going to lose you."
I squeezed his hand.
"You didn't."
"I know."
His voice broke slightly.
I looked at him.
"I love you."
He froze.
I hadn't planned to say it in a hospital room.
Apparently my life had given up on perfect timing.
"What?"
"I said I love you."
His eyes filled.
"Don't make me repeat it."
"I might need you to."
"Rowan."
He laughed and kissed my hand.
"I love you too."
"I know."
"Now who's saying it?"
I smiled.
Outside the window, the moon hung over Greyhaven.
Moon Crown had tried to turn us into a formula.
Instead, it had proven something much simpler.
A bond without choice was control.
A bond with choice was love.
Later, when the immediate crisis had passed, I forced myself to record what had happened and what I had learned from it. Lunaris had taught me that leadership was rarely a dramatic speech or a perfect decision. Most days it was listening longer than I wanted, asking one more question, admitting when I was uncertain, and refusing to let fear make choices for everyone else. I had once believed strength meant enduring anything without complaint. Now I understood that strength could also mean setting a boundary, asking for help, resting before exhaustion became damage, and allowing another person to disagree without treating disagreement as betrayal. That lesson mattered because I wanted the restored Pack to become safer than the one our enemies had destroyed, not merely more powerful.
