The anonymous transfer post resurfaced six months later.
This time, I was the one who shared it.
Tessa nearly dropped her phone.
"You're voluntarily reposting that?"
"Yes."
"Have you been possessed?"
"Probably."
I was preparing a public talk for Hollowcrest's anti-harassment program.
The university had invited me after the Freshman Ball incident.
At first, I refused.
Then I realized the transfer post wasn't only embarrassing history.
It was evidence of how casually people treated cruelty when the target seemed socially acceptable to mock.
Fat.
Anonymous.
Insecure.
Easy.
I stood onstage before hundreds of students.
Behind me, the original post appeared.
Transferring my online girlfriend who I'm meeting soon.
The room went quiet.
"I was the girlfriend."
Most already knew.
Still, saying it myself mattered.
"I was seventeen when the person I trusted decided my body made me disposable."
I showed the old photograph.
No dramatic reveal.
No before-and-after celebration.
Just me.
"This picture is often called my before photo."
I looked at it.
"I don't call it that anymore."
A student raised her hand.
"What do you call it?"
"Me at seventeen."
Simple.
The room stayed silent.
"I did lose weight."
I continued.
"I trained intensely. Too intensely sometimes."
Garrick, sitting near the back, nodded aggressively.
I ignored him.
"I like being athletic. I like my current body. I'm not ashamed of changing."
That distinction mattered.
"But changing my body didn't make me deserving of respect. I deserved respect before."
I looked toward Knox.
He had asked permission to attend.
I had said yes.
He sat quietly beside Elodie.
"When people saw my thinner body, many suddenly decided the transfer was tragic because Knox had given away someone beautiful."
I shook my head.
"That's still missing the point."
Knox lowered his eyes.
"The wrong thing wasn't that he traded away a pretty girl."
I paused.
"The wrong thing was that he treated any girl like she could be traded."
Applause began.
Not explosive.
Steady.
I finished by talking about online privacy, consent, body-based harassment, and anonymous forums.
Afterward, students approached.
Some wanted pictures.
Some shared stories.
One girl waited until almost everyone left.
She was heavy.
Maybe the same size I had once been.
She stared at the floor.
"I've been trying to lose weight."
"Okay."
"My boyfriend says he'll finally post me when I'm thinner."
My chest tightened.
"What do you want?"
"To be thinner."
"That's okay."
She looked surprised.
I continued.
"But do you want a boyfriend who hides you until then?"
Her eyes filled.
"No."
"Then those are two separate decisions."
She nodded.
I didn't tell her to love her body.
I didn't tell her never to change.
I just hoped she understood she didn't have to earn basic dignity.
Outside, Knox waited.
"Good speech."
"Thanks."
He looked nervous.
"I wanted to tell you something."
"What?"
"I deleted the transfer post."
"You can't. Anonymous forum archives preserve copies."
"I know."
He smiled weakly.
"I mean my account."
"Oh."
"I submitted a statement admitting I wrote it."
I stared.
"Why?"
"Because people started saying it might've been fake."
"So?"
"So I don't want you carrying doubt that protects me."
That was surprisingly mature.
"Thank you."
His eyes widened.
"For what?"
"For owning it."
He nodded.
"You're welcome."
Elodie called his name from the steps.
He looked back.
"You should go."
"Yeah."
He hesitated.
"Nessa?"
"What?"
"I'm glad Rowan got the account."
I studied him.
"That's a strange sentence."
"I know."
He smiled.
"But if I hadn't done something awful, you might never have met him."
"No."
I shook my head.
"Don't romanticize it."
His smile faded.
"You're right."
"What you did was wrong."
"Yeah."
"Something good happened afterward."
I looked toward Rowan waiting near the courtyard.
"That doesn't make the wrong thing necessary."
Knox nodded slowly.
"Fair."
That mattered too.
I didn't want my love story with Rowan to turn Knox's cruelty into fate.
Rowan wasn't a reward sent because I suffered enough.
He was simply someone I met through a bad situation who chose to be better than the circumstances that introduced us.
That evening, Rowan and I returned to Lunaris.
My old photograph was still circulating online.
For once, I didn't care.
I had stopped seeing two different girls.
Fat Nessa.
Thin Nessa.
Ugly Nessa.
Beautiful Nessa.
Before.
After.
There had only ever been me.
Changing.
Learning.
Making mistakes.
Growing stronger.
Sometimes literally.
I stood before the mirror in my room.
Rowan appeared behind me.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"You're staring at yourself."
"Is that illegal in Nightvale?"
"Probably regulated."
I laughed.
Then I looked at my reflection again.
"Do you know what I used to see?"
"What?"
"Everything I needed to fix."
His expression softened.
"And now?"
I thought about it.
"Someone I'm responsible for taking care of."
Rowan smiled.
"I like that answer."
"So do I."
My phone buzzed.
Rhea.
[Emergency.]
I immediately called.
"What happened?"
Her voice was deadly serious.
"We have a crisis."
"What?"
"The memorial committee chose beige curtains for the archive hall."
I closed my eyes.
"Rhea."
"They're hideous."
I looked at Rowan.
"Alpha emergency."
He sighed.
"Duty calls."
I smiled at the mirror one last time.
Then I went to save Lunaris from beige curtains.
