Orion Vale looked like Rowan.
Not exactly.
But enough that my wolf noticed before my brain did.
Same height.
Same dark hair.
Same sharp jaw.
His eyes were different.
Grey rather than light blue.
And where Rowan's presence felt warm despite his power, Orion felt cold.
He waited inside an abandoned chapel beyond Council territory.
No guards visible.
Which meant there were definitely guards.
Adrian had forbidden Rowan from going.
Rowan went anyway.
I went with him.
Adrian came too.
Apparently hypocrisy was hereditary.
Orion smiled when we entered.
"Uncle."
Adrian stopped.
"You're alive."
"Observant."
Rowan's jaw tightened.
"Why fake your death?"
"I didn't."
Orion walked toward us.
"I was left for dead."
"By whom?"
"Council loyalists."
Adrian's face changed.
"That's a lie."
"Is it?"
Orion removed his coat and showed a long silver scar across his chest.
"Someone knew I opposed centralization."
He looked at me.
"Long before your charming little charter returned."
I disliked him immediately.
"Did you fund the bounty?"
"No."
"Did Black Moon?"
"Which Black Moon?"
He smiled at our expressions.
"There are three factions."
Of course there were.
Traditionalists.
Purists.
And Restorationists.
Orion led the Restorationists.
He claimed his group wanted the Moonwell Charter restored.
"Then why frame Packs and provoke attacks?"
"We didn't."
"Convenient."
"Someone is using our symbols."
Rhea had predicted that possibility.
The inverted thorned crescent belonged to the Purists.
Orion's Restorationists used no public mark.
"Who leads the Purists?"
Orion looked at Adrian.
"Your adviser."
Silence.
Adrian frowned.
"Which adviser?"
"Malcolm Reed."
I knew the name.
Chief strategist to the Supreme Alpha.
A man who had attended nearly every emergency Council session.
Rowan swore.
Orion continued.
"Reed believes Pack conflict strengthens the species. He wants the guardian Packs to destroy one another."
"Evidence?" I asked.
Orion handed me a drive.
"Financial transfers. Communications. Weapons orders."
"Why give this to us?"
"Because I want the charter ratified."
"And then?"
His eyes moved to Adrian.
"I want my succession claim heard."
There it was.
Rowan went still.
Adrian said, "You surrendered your claim when you were presumed dead."
"I surrendered nothing."
"You're associated with an illegal organization."
"One created because your Council buried lawful limits."
The tension between them filled the chapel.
I stepped between the politics.
"First Reed."
Orion looked at me.
"Then succession?"
"Then legal process."
He smiled.
"You really believe process protects people."
"I believe the alternative is whoever has the biggest claws."
"Sometimes that's enough."
"Then why bring evidence instead of challenging Adrian?"
His smile disappeared.
Good.
We verified the drive before acting.
It took eight hours.
The evidence was real.
Malcolm Reed had authorized payments linked to the bounty.
He had forged Ironclaw transfers.
Ordered fake Nightvale weapons.
Recruited former Stormridge guards.
He had also scheduled an attack on Silvercrest for the following morning.
We moved immediately.
Council security arrested Reed in his office.
Or tried.
He shifted.
A massive black wolf exploded through the conference room window.
Rowan chased him.
I followed.
Reed ran toward the central plaza where hundreds of wolves were gathering for the charter hearings.
He wanted spectacle.
He got it.
Rowan caught him first.
Their wolves collided.
Reed was older but powerful.
I circled.
He snapped at Rowan's throat.
I hit his side.
He turned on me.
Bad decision.
Lunaris Alpha power slammed down.
Reed staggered.
Rowan pinned him.
Security surrounded us.
Reed shifted back, laughing through blood.
"You think this changes anything?"
"You're arrested," I said. "Changes your afternoon."
He looked at Orion, who had appeared at the edge of the crowd.
"Traitor."
Orion didn't react.
Reed shouted toward the gathered wolves.
"Blood is law! Strength is law! The weak survive only because the strong permit it!"
I shifted back.
Someone handed me a coat.
I stepped toward him.
"No."
He laughed.
"You think your Pack survived because of morality?"
"No."
I looked around at Lunaris survivors.
"We survived because people protected one another."
"Sentimental nonsense."
"Maybe."
I looked at Rowan.
At Adrian.
At Orion.
At representatives from Packs that had nearly been manipulated into war.
"But you're the one in chains."
Reed's smile vanished.
The crowd erupted.
Not in violence.
In agreement.
For once, the loudest power in the plaza wasn't an Alpha command.
It was hundreds of wolves refusing his idea of strength.
Orion remained under observation after Reed's arrest, not because we had evidence against him but because trust did not appear automatically with one useful act. He accepted the restriction more calmly than I expected. That made me reconsider my first impression without erasing it. People could be complicated without being secretly good or secretly evil. I had learned that lesson through Knox, through Marcus, and even through members of my own family. The world became easier to understand when everyone was reduced to a role, but easier was not the same as true. As Alpha, I could not afford decisions based only on whether I personally liked someone.
