For the first time in months, Freya woke without checking her phone for messages from lawyers, investigators, or Derek. Sunlight filled the small bedroom, and Louis was still asleep beside her. The quiet felt unfamiliar enough that she lay there for several minutes simply listening to it.
The criminal case against Adrian would continue, but Freya had stopped organizing her days around it. Awake Stories needed her attention now. Two translation contracts were waiting, her audio adaptation had entered final production, and her rights manager wanted an answer about the streaming offer.
At breakfast, Louis asked whether she planned to accept the adaptation deal.
Freya shook her head. The first offer was generous, but the company wanted too much creative control. In her previous life, she might have accepted immediately because the money seemed enormous. Now she understood that a large number was not automatically a good deal.
Louis did not tell her what to do. He only asked which rights mattered most to her.
That question helped. Freya wanted consultation on major character changes, a limited option period, and the ability to reclaim adaptation rights if production stalled.
Her own attorney later confirmed those demands were reasonable.
The negotiation became Freya's main problem for the week, and she loved how ordinary it was.
Meanwhile, Northstar continued expanding. Louis spent long hours at the office again, but the rhythm between them had changed. He texted when he would be late. Freya told him when deadlines made dinner impossible. Neither expected the other to silently arrange life around them.
One evening Louis returned with takeout and found Freya surrounded by contracts.
"You look bankrupt," he said.
"Emotionally."
He placed the food beside her laptop.
Freya laughed. Once she had planned to support him through poverty. Now he was feeding her through contract negotiations.
Derek called later with a brief legal update. Adrian's attorneys were challenging several searches, which everyone had expected. No emergency action was required from Freya.
She thanked him and ended the call.
Louis noticed she did not ask ten follow-up questions.
"Progress?" he teased.
"I have a company to run."
That answer pleased her more than she expected.
For so long, her identity in this world had been defined by what happened to other people: Louis's wife, David and his wife's daughter, Adrian's unexpected variable, Claire's fictional character.
Awake Stories belonged to Freya because she chose it.
Before bed, she opened Claire's Gentle Devotion manuscript one more time. The original ending described Freya packing bags while Louis sat alone in a rented apartment.
She closed the file without finishing the paragraph.
Across the room, Louis was complaining that she had moved his charger again.
"It's on your side of the bed," she said.
"It was on my desk."
"Then perhaps it transmigrated."
Louis stared at her.
Freya burst out laughing.
The written ending had never looked more ridiculous.
Freya's team also began preparing a proper operating budget instead of treating every successful book as guaranteed future income. She liked the discipline. Louis had taught her, mostly by example, that rebuilding wealth mattered less than building something capable of surviving a bad year. Awake Stories would grow slowly enough that Freya could still recognize the company she had created.
