Mercer believed the Mirror anomaly deserved years of research.
Freya did not.
She allowed independent experts to preserve anonymized technical data, but she refused to become a permanent subject.
Claire agreed. She had already watched one research project turn people into variables.
Nadia was even firmer.
"Some unanswered questions are safer than bad answers," she said.
Freya understood.
Still, one question bothered her privately.
If the strange synchronization had somehow brought information between worlds, could it provide a way back?
She did not tell Louis immediately.
The possibility followed her for several days.
Her previous life had ended violently. She had friends, readers, unfinished work, and a world where she had once belonged. If there were a door, did she have a responsibility to look for it?
Then she realized something painful.
She had died there.
Even if information could cross, there was no evidence her old body or old life still waited.
Searching for a way back could mean sacrificing the life in front of her for a theory.
One evening she finally told Louis.
He became very quiet.
"If there were a way," he asked, "would you go?"
Freya had expected the question.
Her answer came more easily than expected.
"No."
Louis searched her face.
"I miss parts of that world," Freya continued. "But missing something isn't the same as belonging there more than I belong here."
She touched his hand.
"I chose this life before I even loved you. I chose it when I decided not to take the money and run."
Louis's fingers closed around hers.
Freya laughed softly. "Though technically I still planned to run later."
"I remember."
The tension broke.
They agreed not to pursue speculative experiments intended to reproduce the anomaly.
Claire's backup would remain preserved for legitimate research under strict ethical controls.
Freya felt a door close.
Instead of grief, she felt peace.
The next morning she removed the old plot notebook from her desk drawer.
She had filled it with names, predictions, timelines, and warnings from Claire's novel.
On the final page she wrote one sentence.
NO WAY BACK NEEDED.
Then she placed the notebook in a box with the last remnants of her first days in this world.
She did not destroy it.
The past did not need to disappear.
It simply no longer needed to direct her.
Louis admitted later that her answer had frightened him before it relieved him. He had never wanted love to become another kind of trap, especially after learning how Adrian engineered people's choices. Freya told him choosing someone freely did not become less free simply because the choice was permanent in intention.
