Eleanor Price welcomed Freya differently from the way she had welcomed Louis. She looked at Freya for a long moment, then reached out and held her hands. "You look like your mother when you're serious." The inherited memories made Freya's chest tighten.
Louis sat beside her while Eleanor opened the locked document case she had shown him before. This time, she removed a thin leather folder bearing Charles Stone's initials.
"Charles asked me to keep this until I could determine whether the danger had passed," Eleanor said. "It never did."
Inside were handwritten notes, copies of old financial statements, and a map of companies connected through contractors and investment vehicles. Meridian Advisory appeared near the center. Greyline's predecessor appeared beside it.
Freya pointed to another name. "Ashford Holdings?"
Louis knew it immediately. "An old family investment company."
Eleanor nodded. "Charles believed someone was using legitimate Stone family entities to hide transfers. He couldn't determine who authorized them."
Freya's father had apparently discovered similar transfers through Stonebridge projects. The two men began comparing records privately.
"Then my parents died," Freya said quietly.
Eleanor's expression softened. "Yes."
"And Charles?"
"His health deteriorated not long afterward. He never finished the investigation."
Freya looked through the notes until she found Victor's name. Beside it, Charles had written: KNOWS MORE THAN HE ADMITS. NOT THE SOURCE.
Louis read the sentence twice.
Victor had been suspicious, but Charles himself hadn't believed Victor was the person at the top.
Another note contained only two words: FAMILY ACCESS.
Louis's jaw tightened.
"Who had access to Ashford Holdings?" Freya asked.
"Charles, Louis's father, several trustees, and the family office," Eleanor said. "After Louis's father died, control became complicated."
That created another problem. The network might have survived through legitimate permissions passed between generations.
Eleanor then handed Freya a sealed copy of an old partnership agreement. "Your father was supposed to receive a percentage of one development fund. After his death, the payment disappeared from the estate records."
Freya frowned. "How much?"
"Enough that you should have inherited considerably more than you did."
Money itself didn't upset Freya. The implication did.
Someone had manipulated her parents' estate.
Louis's voice became cold. "Martin Vale?"
"Perhaps unknowingly," Eleanor said. "Victor was involved in the paperwork."
Freya finally understood why the original owner had grown up believing her parents left little beyond their house and modest savings.
The past had not merely touched Louis's empire. It had shaped Freya's life too.
As they prepared to leave, Eleanor stopped Louis. "Charles made one mistake. He kept trying to protect everyone by withholding information."
She looked between him and Freya.
"Don't repeat it."
Neither answered immediately, but both understood the warning applied to more than the investigation.
On the drive home, Freya thought about Eleanor's final warning. Louis had been hiding Northstar to protect his plans. Freya had been hiding her identity to protect their relationship. Both of them had reasons. That didn't necessarily make secrecy harmless. For the first time, Freya wondered whether the truth she feared might eventually become less dangerous than continuing to hide it.
The next step could wait until morning. Too many things had changed at once, and neither of them wanted to make another decision simply because uncertainty was uncomfortable. They had learned that patience often revealed more than pressure ever could.
