The days following Richard Hale's arrest were strangely peaceful.
For the first time since Elliot woke from his coma, the Foster household wasn't surrounded by tension.
Avery still visited her father regularly.
His condition had continued to improve, and the doctors were optimistic about his recovery.
Elliot, meanwhile, returned to work gradually.
He spent only a few hours each day at the office before coming home.
Neither of them talked about divorce anymore.
The subject had quietly disappeared from their conversations.
One evening, Avery was preparing dinner when she heard the front door open.
"You're home early," she called.
"I finished everything I needed to do."
Elliot walked into the kitchen and stopped.
Avery was standing beside the stove wearing an apron.
"What?" she asked when she noticed him staring.
"Nothing."
"You're just... different here."
"Different how?"
"You look happy."
Avery smiled.
"I am."
The simple answer caught him off guard.
Elliot walked closer.
"Can I help?"
"You?"
"I'm serious."
She handed him a bowl.
"Then wash these vegetables."
"That's all?"
"You asked to help."
"I did."
For the next twenty minutes, they worked side by side.
There was no tension.
No formal distance.
No reminder that their marriage had once been a transaction.
When dinner was ready, they sat across from each other at the table.
"The food is good," Elliot said.
"You sound surprised."
"I'm still recovering from your early cooking attempts."
Avery laughed.
"You survived."
"Barely."
Their laughter filled the dining room.
Later that night, a storm moved over the city.
Thunder shook the windows.
Avery stood on the balcony watching the rain.
Elliot joined her carrying two cups of tea.
"Cold?"
"A little."
He placed a warm cup in her hands.
"Thanks."
They stood quietly for a while.
"Avery," Elliot finally said.
"Yes?"
"I remember hearing your voice when I was unconscious."
She turned toward him in surprise.
"You remember?"
"Not everything."
"But I remember pieces."
"You used to sit beside my bed and talk to me."
"You told me about books."
"Your father."
"Your plans for the bookstore."
Avery smiled softly.
"I didn't know you could hear me."
"Neither did I."
He looked out at the rain.
"There were times when I wanted to wake up."
"Your voice made the darkness feel less empty."
Avery's heart tightened.
"Elliot..."
"I used to think waking up would be the most important thing that ever happened to me."
"Now I realize it was only the beginning."
He turned toward her.
"Because waking up brought me to you."
Avery couldn't speak.
The rain continued falling around them.
"I don't know when it changed," Elliot continued.
"At first, I was angry."
"Then I became curious about you."
"Then I started looking for reasons to keep you close."
"And now..."
He stepped closer.
"Now I can't imagine this house without you."
Avery's eyes filled with tears.
"You don't have to say anything," Elliot whispered.
"I'm not asking for an answer tonight."
Avery looked into his eyes.
"But I do have something to say."
"What?"
"I stayed because I thought you needed time to recover."
"Then I stayed because I didn't want to leave you alone."
"And somewhere along the way..."
"I stopped thinking of you as a man I had married."
She took a small breath.
"I started thinking of you as the man I chose."
Elliot's expression softened.
"Avery..."
He reached for her hand.
This time, there was no hesitation.
Their fingers intertwined naturally.
"I love you," he said.
The words were quiet.
Simple.
Certain.
Avery's tears finally slipped down her cheeks.
"I love you too."
For a moment, neither moved.
Then Elliot gently pulled her closer.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
"Even after everything?"
"Because of everything."
He rested his forehead against hers.
"Then I'll spend the rest of my life making sure you never regret choosing me."
Avery smiled through her tears.
"You'd better."
Elliot laughed softly.
Then he pressed a gentle kiss against her forehead.
The storm outside continued through the night.
But inside the Foster mansion...
The years of uncertainty had finally ended.
Their marriage was no longer an arrangement.
It was no longer an obligation.
It was love.
And for the first time...
Both Avery and Elliot were completely certain that they had chosen each other.
