For a long moment, I could only stare at my father.
"Lydia ordered it?"
He nodded.
"She told Noah that the ceremony could not be delayed. She knew the moonstones would be removed, and she knew the barrier would become unstable."
I looked at the sealed document on the table.
"Then why did you protect her?"
My father's eyes filled with regret.
"Because I believed her. Because your mother believed her. Because Noah loved her. And because we convinced ourselves that saving Lydia was worth asking everyone else to sacrifice something."
"You sacrificed me."
He lowered his head.
"Yes."
The word hurt more than an excuse would have.
I opened the document.
Inside were copies of Lydia's messages to the Moon Hall administrator. She had asked for the ceremonial lane to be completed before the mating ceremony. She had also written that if the barrier failed, Caden would have no choice but to remain close to her during the chaos.
Then I found the message that made my hands tremble.
"Evelyn will be there. She always comes when Caden calls."
Lydia had known me well enough to use my loyalty against me.
I closed the file.
"Where is she now?"
"Under Council protection in Blackridge."
I stood.
"Then the Council can hear everything."
My father looked at me carefully.
"What will you do when Caden comes?"
"Nothing."
"Nothing?"
"He made his choice. I made mine."
Two days later, the Moon Council hearing began.
Lydia was brought into the chamber with Noah. Caden entered behind them, but he did not stand beside Lydia this time.
He stood alone.
When I entered, every conversation stopped.
Caden looked at me as though he had forgotten how to breathe.
His eyes moved to my stomach.
I was visibly pregnant now.
He whispered my name.
"Evelyn."
I took my seat beside the Frost River delegation.
The Council presented the evidence one document at a time.
The false diagnosis.
The payment to the healer.
The altered construction plans.
The messages between Lydia and Noah.
The instructions that caused the moonstones to be removed.
Lydia cried through most of the hearing.
But no one rushed to comfort her.
Not even Caden.
When asked whether the messages were genuine, Lydia finally admitted the truth.
"I was afraid Evelyn would take everything from me again."
I looked at her.
"I never took anything from you."
She laughed bitterly through her tears.
"You had everything. Your parents loved you. Noah protected you. Caden loved you. You were going to become Luna. I had nothing."
"You had a family," I said quietly. "You just wanted mine."
She looked away.
The Council found Lydia responsible for falsifying her medical condition and conspiring to manipulate the Luna ceremony. Noah was stripped of his security authority and ordered to answer for his role in the altered barrier records. My parents were removed from their Council positions pending a separate review.
Caden stood when the hearing ended.
"Evelyn, please."
I stopped but did not turn around.
"I know I have no right to ask you for anything," he said. "But I need you to know that I am sorry."
"I know."
He sounded surprised.
"You know?"
"Regret is easy when the person you hurt finally walks away."
He looked down.
"I loved you."
I turned to face him.
"You loved the version of me who would always forgive you."
His eyes reddened.
"Is there nothing I can do?"
"No."
He looked toward my stomach.
"Will you let me meet my child?"
I was silent for several seconds.
"The Council order protects the pup from anyone who might use the child to control me. If you want a relationship with your child one day, you will earn it through the law and through actions, not promises."
Caden nodded slowly.
"I will."
"Then start by respecting my decision."
He stepped aside.
For once, he did not try to stop me.
Months later, Frost River celebrated the opening of its new investigation headquarters.
I stood on the balcony overlooking the pack territory while snow fell over the mountains.
My pup was born at dawn.
A healthy little girl.
The healer placed her in my arms, and the moment I heard her first cry, every wound I had carried seemed smaller.
Mara stood beside me and smiled.
"Have you chosen a name?"
I looked down at my daughter.
"Hope."
Because she was proof that something beautiful could survive even after everything around it had fallen apart.
A sealed letter from Caden arrived a week later.
I opened it only once.
There was no request for forgiveness.
No demand that I return.
Only a short message.
"I finally understand that losing you was not the punishment. It was the consequence of every choice I made when I still had you."
I folded the letter and placed it away.
I did not hate him anymore.
That was enough.
Blackridge had once been the place where I believed my life would end beside the man I loved.
Frost River became the place where I learned that my life could begin without him.
I had lost a crown I was supposed to wear.
But I had gained something greater.
A career I had chosen.
A daughter I would protect.
A family built on trust instead of obligation.
And a future that belonged entirely to me.
I looked toward the northern mountains as the first light of morning broke across the snow.
Once, I had walked away from Blackridge carrying nothing but a pregnancy report and a broken heart.
Now I stood there with my daughter in my arms and an entire life ahead of me.
Caden had chosen another woman while I wore the crown meant for me.
So I left.
And somewhere along the road, I realized the crown had never been what made me valuable.
I had been enough before he chose me.
I was enough after he lost me.
And I would be enough for the rest of my life.
The end.
