The following morning, Shannon barely managed to sleep.
She had spent the entire night sitting beside John's hospital bed, watching the steady rise and fall of his tiny chest.
Every beep from the heart monitor made her tense.
She was terrified that one day the sound would simply stop.
"Mrs. Ford?"
A doctor entered the room carrying a thick medical file.
"Would you please come with me?"
Shannon nodded quietly before following him into his office.
The doctor's expression alone told her that the news wasn't good.
"We've reviewed John's latest test results," he began.
"Unfortunately, the previous treatment isn't working as well as we'd hoped."
Her heart skipped a beat.
"What does that mean?"
"He'll need a more advanced procedure."
"The sooner we begin, the better his chances."
Shannon gripped the edge of the chair.
"And... the cost?"
The doctor gently slid a document across the desk.
The number printed at the bottom made her face lose all color.
"I know it's expensive," he said sympathetically.
"But delaying treatment would be extremely risky."
Shannon forced herself to remain calm.
"Please prepare everything."
"I'll find a way."
Leaving the office, she leaned against the hospital wall and closed her eyes.
The envelope Sean had given her the previous night suddenly felt painfully small.
It wasn't enough.
Not even close.
She couldn't afford to waste a single day.
After making sure John was resting comfortably, Shannon left the hospital and headed toward the Ford Group headquarters once again.
This time, however, she didn't intend to see Sean.
Instead, she visited the finance department.
"Mrs. Ford," the receptionist greeted politely.
"How may I help you?"
"I'd like to ask about my husband's executive bonus."
The receptionist looked uncomfortable.
"I'm sorry, but we aren't allowed to discuss company finances."
"I understand."
"Thank you anyway."
As Shannon turned to leave, she overheard several employees talking nearby.
"Did you hear? Mr. Ford is taking Miss Shelby to the charity gala this weekend."
"Really? I thought he was married."
"Everyone knows that marriage exists only on paper."
"Poor Mrs. Ford."
"Honestly, I've never even seen them together."
Shannon lowered her head and quietly walked away.
The whispers followed her all the way to the elevator.
Meanwhile, Sean sat inside the boardroom leading an executive meeting.
Although the financial presentation continued smoothly, he found himself distracted.
For reasons he couldn't explain, Shannon's pale face from the previous evening kept appearing in his mind.
"Mr. Ford?"
His assistant's voice brought him back.
"The contract requires your signature."
"Right."
Sean signed the documents without another word.
When the meeting ended, his assistant remained behind.
"Sir, your wife came by earlier today."
Sean frowned.
"She did?"
"Yes."
"She didn't ask to see you."
"She only spoke briefly with the finance department before leaving."
"Did she say why?"
"No, sir."
Sean nodded dismissively.
"Forget about it."
Yet instead of returning to work, he found himself staring absentmindedly out the office window.
Something felt... unusual.
For years, Shannon had always waited outside his office hoping to speak with him.
Today she hadn't even tried.
That small change unsettled him more than he cared to admit.
Across town, Shannon returned to the hospital carrying fresh fruit for John.
When she entered the room, she found him awake.
"Mom!"
The little boy smiled brightly despite looking weak.
"You're back."
"Of course I am."
She sat beside him and gently held his hand.
"Did you eat your lunch?"
"Almost all of it."
"The nurse said I was very brave today."
"You are," Shannon replied with a smile that barely hid her sadness.
"You're the bravest boy I know."
"Mom..."
"When can I go home?"
The innocent question pierced her heart.
"Very soon," she lied softly.
"The doctors just want to make sure you're completely healthy first."
John nodded happily.
"Will Dad come too?"
For a brief moment, Shannon couldn't answer.
"He's... very busy at work," she finally whispered.
"But he loves you in his own way."
Even as she spoke the words, she wondered whether she still believed them herself.
That evening, Shannon stopped by a small café before returning home.
Her closest friend, Emily Carter, was already waiting.
"You look exhausted," Emily said immediately.
"What happened?"
Shannon quietly handed her the estimate for John's treatment.
Emily's eyes widened.
"This is impossible."
"How are you supposed to pay all of this?"
"I don't know."
"Sean won't help?"
Shannon looked down at her coffee.
"He helps... but only enough to keep asking questions."
"Then tell him the truth!"
"Tell him John is his son!"
Shannon slowly shook her head.
"Not yet."
"Why not?"
"Because he already believes the worst about me."
"If I suddenly tell him now... he'll think I'm lying for money."
Emily sighed deeply.
"You can't keep carrying this alone forever."
"Maybe not."
"But until John is safe... I'll endure anything."
Late that night, Sean finally returned to the empty mansion.
The house was silent.
He walked past the dining room and noticed untouched food still sitting on the table.
Beside it was a small birthday card.
He picked it up curiously.
Inside, only a few simple words were written.
"Happy Birthday, Sean."
"I hope someday you'll find the happiness you're searching for."
There was no complaint.
No anger.
Only quiet sincerity.
Sean stared at the card longer than he expected.
For reasons he couldn't explain, the empty house suddenly felt colder than usual.
Upstairs, he noticed the guest room door slightly open.
Shannon wasn't there.
Neither were any signs that she had returned home.
"Where is she?" he muttered.
His phone buzzed almost immediately.
It was Shelby.
"Sean, are we still having dinner tonight?"
He looked once more at the handwritten card before slipping it into his pocket.
"Yes," he replied absentmindedly.
"I'll be there soon."
But as he walked toward the door, one thought refused to leave his mind.
If Shannon hadn't gone home...
Then where had she spent the night?
