Before sunrise, several black SUVs stopped outside Shelby Sue's apartment building.
Sean stepped out of the first vehicle, his expression colder than anyone had ever seen.
His personal security team surrounded the entrance.
"Bring her downstairs," Sean ordered.
"Yes, Mr. Ford."
Minutes later, Shelby was escorted into the lobby.
The moment she saw Sean, she forced a nervous smile.
"Sean... what a surprise."
"Is it?"
He tossed a folder onto the table between them.
"Explain these."
Shelby opened it.
Inside were surveillance photos, bank transfers, and recordings linking her to the two men who had approached Shannon.
The color drained from her face.
"I... I can explain."
"Go ahead."
"They only wanted to scare her."
"I never wanted anyone hurt."
"Scare her?" Sean asked quietly.
"A mother whose child is waiting for surgery?"
"Have you lost your mind?"
Shelby reached for his arm.
"Sean, I only did it because I love you."
He stepped back immediately.
"No."
"Love doesn't destroy innocent people."
"What you felt was obsession."
"Please..."
"Get out of my life."
"And if Shannon or John suffers because of anything you've done..."
"I'll make sure you answer for it legally."
Shelby collapsed into a chair, realizing everything was over.
"You chose her..." she whispered.
"I chose what was right."
Without another glance, Sean walked away.
Later that morning, the police officially opened an investigation into Shelby and her hired accomplices.
Protective officers were assigned to the hospital around the clock.
When Sean arrived at John's room, Shannon was quietly reading beside the bed.
She looked up.
"You found out who was behind it?"
"Yes."
"It was Shelby."
Shannon wasn't surprised.
"I thought so."
"She's been taken into custody for questioning."
"She won't bother you again."
Shannon simply nodded.
She no longer had the energy to hate anyone.
All that mattered was John's surgery.
That afternoon, Dr. Harris entered with encouraging news.
"Everything is ready."
"The operation begins tomorrow morning."
"Our entire surgical team is prepared."
John smiled bravely.
"Will it hurt?"
"You'll be asleep the whole time," the doctor assured him.
"And when you wake up..."
"You'll have your mom waiting beside you."
"And..."
John looked shyly toward Sean.
"Will he be there too?"
Sean's heart tightened.
He slowly walked closer to the bed.
"If your mom allows it..."
"I'll be right outside."
John grinned.
"Good."
"Families stay together."
Neither adult could respond.
The child's innocent words carried more forgiveness than either of them deserved.
That evening, after John had fallen asleep, Shannon stepped onto the hospital rooftop for a breath of fresh air.
Sean quietly joined her.
For a while, they simply looked over the city lights.
"I already spoke with my lawyer," Sean said.
"The divorce papers remain exactly as they are."
"You don't need to change your decision because of John."
Shannon looked at him.
"Thank you."
"I finally understand something," Sean continued.
"For years I thought money could solve every problem."
"But the one thing you needed from me..."
"I never gave you."
"Respect."
"Trust."
"Love."
Shannon's eyes softened.
"I spent fourteen years hoping you'd say those words."
"Now... they don't hurt anymore."
"Because you've stopped loving me?"
She remained quiet for several seconds.
"Because I've finally learned to love myself first."
Sean lowered his head.
"I don't deserve another chance."
"No," she answered honestly.
"You don't."
"But John deserves a father."
"Whether you become one... depends entirely on you."
Those words gave Sean a small measure of hope.
"I'll spend the rest of my life earning it."
"Not with promises."
"With actions."
"I understand."
The next morning, the hospital became unusually quiet.
John was wheeled toward the operating room.
Shannon held one side of the bed.
Sean walked silently on the other.
"Mom," John whispered.
"I'm a little scared."
"It's okay to be scared," Shannon replied gently.
"Brave people feel afraid too."
"They just don't give up."
John nodded.
"Dad..."
Sean froze.
It was the first time the little boy had called him that.
"Yes?"
"Take care of Mom while I'm sleeping."
Sean's eyes reddened.
"I will."
"I promise."
The operating room doors slowly opened.
The nurses wheeled John inside.
A few seconds later...
The doors closed.
The red surgery light illuminated above the entrance.
Time seemed to stop.
Shannon silently folded her hands together, praying.
Sean remained beside her without speaking.
For the first time in many years...
They weren't standing together as husband and wife.
They weren't standing together because of obligation.
They stood together for only one reason.
Their son.
Hours passed.
Every minute felt like an eternity.
Finally...
The operating room doors opened.
Dr. Harris stepped outside, removing his surgical mask.
His serious expression made both Shannon and Sean's hearts stop.
"Doctor..." Shannon whispered.
"How is he?"
The doctor looked at them quietly before speaking.
"The surgery is over..."
