Business Summit Week arrived faster than anyone expected.
Every major corporation in the city would attend the annual Strategic Leadership Forum, where executives, investors, and industry leaders gathered to discuss future partnerships and business trends.
For Vanguard Holdings, it was an opportunity to showcase its rapid growth.
For Wantrell Corporation, it was a chance to regain investor confidence after weeks of setbacks.
For Derrick Cromwell, however, the evening would become something far more personal.
Lily knocked gently on Yara's office door.
Director Carter, your suit has arrived.
Yara looked up from the presentation she had been reviewing.
Thank you, Lily.
Mr. Lawson also asked me to remind you that your presentation begins right after the opening keynote.
I remember.
Are you nervous?
Yara smiled softly.
A little.
You don't look nervous.
I've learned something over the past few weeks.
What is it?
When you've prepared properly, there's no reason to fear the room.
Lily laughed.
I wish I had your confidence.
Confidence comes from preparation, not talent.
After Lily left, Yara looked at the invitation lying on her desk.
Strategic Leadership Forum.
Grand Orion Hotel.
Seven o'clock.
She already knew Wantrell would be attending.
Daniel had warned her a week earlier.
There's a good chance you'll meet your former colleagues.
She had smiled calmly.
That's alright.
Are you sure?
I'm no longer afraid of my past.
Across the city, Derrick stood inside Wantrell's conference room giving final instructions.
Tonight matters.
We need investors to believe in this company again.
No mistakes.
No unnecessary interviews.
Stay professional.
Everyone nodded.
Molly adjusted the expensive earrings Derrick had complimented that morning.
Don't worry. Everything will go smoothly.
Derrick only nodded absentmindedly.
His thoughts weren't on investors.
They were on Vanguard.
More specifically...
They were on Yara.
If she truly worked there, tonight would confirm it.
By evening, the Grand Orion Hotel glittered beneath enormous crystal chandeliers.
Business leaders from across the country filled the ballroom.
Elegant music played softly while waiters moved through the crowd carrying glasses of champagne.
Daniel entered beside Yara.
She wore an elegant ivory pantsuit with silver heels.
Professional.
Simple.
Graceful.
Nothing flashy.
Yet she attracted attention the moment she entered.
Several executives immediately walked over.
Daniel.
Congratulations on your newest director.
We've heard wonderful things about her.
Daniel smiled proudly.
She's exceeded every expectation.
Yara greeted each executive with calm confidence.
No nervousness.
No desire to impress anyone.
She simply introduced herself and spoke naturally.
Across the ballroom, Derrick had just finished speaking with two investors when another executive approached.
Mr. Cromwell.
Vanguard has arrived.
Almost instinctively, Derrick turned.
Everything around him seemed to disappear.
There she was.
Yara.
Standing beside Daniel Lawson while speaking comfortably with several CEOs.
She looked different.
Not because of her clothes.
Not because of her hairstyle.
She simply looked lighter.
Peaceful.
The tiredness that had lived in her eyes for years had vanished.
Her smile no longer looked forced.
It reached her eyes.
Beside him, Molly frowned.
That's Yara?
Yes.
She looks... happier.
Derrick didn't answer.
Because he was thinking exactly the same thing.
A few moments later, the host stepped onto the stage.
Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we'd like to introduce one of the fastest-rising executives in our industry.
Please welcome Vanguard Holdings' Director of Strategic Development...
Ms. Yara Carter.
The ballroom erupted into applause.
Derrick's hands slowly tightened around the glass he was holding.
Director.
The promotion she had deserved for years.
The promotion he had never even considered giving her.
Yara stepped confidently onto the stage.
Thank you.
People often believe successful companies are built by brilliant strategies.
Personally, I think they're built by something much simpler.
Trust.
When employees trust leadership, they aren't afraid to share ideas.
When clients trust your promises, they remain loyal.
When leaders trust capable people instead of controlling them, organizations naturally become stronger.
The ballroom became completely silent.
She continued.
Many companies invest millions into technology while forgetting the people expected to use it.
But a company's greatest asset has never been software or buildings.
It's the people who dedicate years of their lives to helping it succeed.
If those people stop feeling valued...
Eventually they'll take their talent somewhere they're appreciated.
Every sentence landed heavily inside Derrick's chest.
She never once looked in his direction.
She didn't need to.
He knew exactly who those words were meant for.
When she finished speaking, the audience rose to their feet.
A standing ovation echoed throughout the ballroom.
Daniel applauded proudly.
Several investors immediately asked to schedule meetings with Vanguard.
Business reporters hurried toward the stage.
Everyone wanted to speak with Yara.
Derrick remained exactly where he stood.
Watching.
Remembering.
Years ago, she had stood beside him during his first presentation as CEO.
She had spent three sleepless nights preparing every report.
When the presentation ended successfully, journalists surrounded Derrick.
No one noticed Yara quietly collecting documents in the background.
Neither had he.
Now the roles had completely reversed.
This time, she stood beneath the spotlight.
And he was the one standing unnoticed among the crowd.
Eventually, Yara stepped away from the reporters for a brief moment.
As she turned, her eyes met Derrick's across the ballroom.
Neither of them moved.
Neither smiled.
Neither looked away immediately.
For several long seconds, seven years of memories seemed to pass silently between them.
Finally, Yara gave a small, polite nod.
The kind of greeting someone offers a former colleague.
Nothing more.
Then she turned and continued speaking with another group of executives.
She never looked back.
Derrick remained standing in the same place.
Something inside him quietly shattered.
For years, he had believed Yara would always remain somewhere within reach.
Whether as his employee.
His fiancée.
Or simply the woman waiting for him after work.
Tonight he finally understood the truth.
She hadn't just left Wantrell.
She had built an entirely new life.
One where she no longer needed him.
And perhaps...
Never would again.
