Rain poured over Saint Gabriel Cemetery.
The Broker's words echoed through the darkness.
"You've been standing on the answer this entire time."
My eyes slowly drifted toward my mother's grave.
"What are you talking about?" I whispered.
The Broker smiled faintly.
"Ask your father where Eleanor Romano is buried."
A chill ran through my body.
"This is my mother's grave."
"Is it?"
Before anyone could react, the Broker tossed a small silver key onto the wet ground.
"You'll need that."
Vincent immediately raised his gun.
"Don't move."
"You're in no position to make demands," the Broker replied calmly.
"Everything you know has been carefully arranged."
"Who is Raven?" Vincent demanded.
"You'll meet Raven soon enough."
"Not tonight."
Suddenly, headlights illuminated the cemetery.
Several black SUVs rushed through the front gate.
"Ambush!" Lucas shouted.
Gunfire erupted from the darkness.
Vincent immediately pushed me behind a marble monument.
"Stay down!"
"What about the Broker?"
"Forget him!"
Bullets shattered nearby gravestones.
Vincent's security team returned fire while Lucas radioed for reinforcements.
When the shooting finally stopped, the black SUVs had vanished.
So had the Broker.
Only the silver key remained.
Vincent picked it up.
"He's leading us somewhere."
"Then we follow," I answered.
Early the next morning, we returned to Romano Manor.
Father had disappeared during the night.
His office was empty.
His phone had been switched off.
"He's running," Lucas said.
"No," Vincent replied.
"He's hiding."
"There's a difference."
I couldn't stop thinking about what the Broker had said.
"Ask your father where Eleanor Romano is buried."
"Vincent..."
"What if my mother isn't actually buried there?"
He remained silent.
"There's only one way to know."
By noon, we had obtained a court order to inspect the grave.
The cemetery was closed to the public.
Only the police, Vincent, Lucas, and I stood nearby as workers carefully lifted the heavy stone.
My heart pounded with every passing second.
The coffin was finally brought to the surface.
The lid was opened slowly.
I stopped breathing.
It was empty.
No remains.
No clothing.
Nothing.
"Impossible..." I whispered.
Tears filled my eyes.
"Where is my mother?"
Even Vincent looked stunned.
"Someone buried an empty coffin."
"Twenty years ago," Lucas added quietly.
One of the investigators reached into the bottom of the coffin.
"There's something here."
He removed a waterproof metal box.
"Locked," he said.
I looked down at the silver key the Broker had thrown at us.
"Give it to me."
My hands trembled as I inserted the key.
Click.
The box opened.
Inside were three items.
A faded photograph.
A cassette tape.
And a handwritten letter.
The envelope was addressed to me.
For My Daughter, Sophia.
My vision blurred.
I carefully unfolded the letter.
My dearest Sophia,
If you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you.
Never believe the story of my death.
The accident was planned.
Someone wanted me to disappear because I discovered what the Raven organization truly is.
If I survived, they would never stop hunting us.
If I vanished, you might still have a chance.
One day you will learn that monsters do not hide in shadows.
They wear expensive suits, attend charity dinners, and smile for cameras.
Trust your heart.
Not your family name.
Love always,
Mother.
A tear rolled down my cheek.
"She knew," I whispered.
"She knew everything."
Vincent gently placed a hand on my shoulder.
"There's still the cassette."
Lucas quickly found an old recorder inside the cemetery office.
We gathered around as the tape began to play.
Static filled the room.
Then my mother's voice echoed through the speakers.
"If this recording has reached Sophia..."
"Then Raven has already begun hunting her."
"Listen carefully."
"The leader of Raven has only one weakness."
"He trusts no one except his own blood."
"His greatest mistake was believing I never learned his identity."
The recording suddenly skipped.
Static interrupted several seconds of audio.
Then her voice returned.
"His name is..."
More static.
"...Ster..."
"...can't let him..."
"Protect Sophia..."
The tape abruptly ended.
"No!" I cried.
"That's it?"
"The most important part is missing."
Lucas rewound the cassette several times.
"The tape was damaged deliberately."
"Someone erased only one section."
"The name," Vincent whispered.
"Exactly the part we needed."
I looked at the faded photograph found inside the box.
It showed my mother standing beside another woman.
Both were smiling.
"Who is she?" I asked.
Vincent stared at the picture.
His expression slowly changed.
"I know her."
"You do?"
"That's Margaret Sterling."
"Alexander's mother."
I froze.
"They knew each other?"
"Not just knew each other."
"They were sisters."
The room fell silent.
"What...?"
"Sophia..." Vincent said softly.
"Your mother wasn't only a Romano."
"She was born a Sterling."
"Which means..."
Lucas slowly finished the sentence.
"You and Alexander aren't strangers connected by an arranged marriage."
"You're family."
The truth struck me like lightning.
The marriage alliance.
The attacks.
The obsession with keeping me away from Boston.
Everything suddenly made sense.
Before anyone could speak again, Vincent's phone rang.
He answered immediately.
His face turned pale.
"What happened?" Lucas asked.
Vincent lowered the phone slowly.
"Alexander's gone."
"He disappeared from the hospital thirty minutes ago."
"But he didn't leave willingly."
"The security cameras show him being taken..."
"By Richard Sterling himself."
