Atlas remained in the empty maternity room long after everyone else had left.
His inner wolf refused to accept the silence.
Their daughter was supposed to be here.
Elena was supposed to be here.
But there was nothing.
No jasmine scent.
No tiny heartbeat.
No warm pup curled against her mother's chest.
Only an unbearable emptiness.
The door suddenly opened.
One of the senior guards stepped inside.
“Alpha.”
Atlas didn't look up.
“What?”
The guard hesitated.
“There is something you need to know.”
Atlas slowly raised his head.
“What is it?”
“The hospital records don't make sense.”
Atlas stood immediately.
“Explain.”
The guard placed several documents on the table.
“The medical report says the pup was born without breathing. But the doctor who performed the emergency procedure hasn't signed a death certificate.”
Atlas stared at the papers.
“What are you saying?”
“I'm saying the hospital record only confirms that the pup was unresponsive at birth. It doesn't confirm that she died.”
Atlas's heart began pounding.
“Then why was I told she was dead?”
The guard lowered his voice.
“Because that is what the Registry clerk was instructed to tell you.”
Atlas's face turned cold.
“By whom?”
The guard looked away.
“Elena.”
The name struck him like a blow.
Atlas grabbed the edge of the table.
“She lied to me?”
“She requested that the pup's survival be kept confidential.”
For several seconds, Atlas couldn't speak.
His wolf suddenly surged forward with a single desperate thought.
Alive.
Their daughter might still be alive.
“Where is Elena?”
“We don't know.”
“Find her.”
The guard nodded.
“We're already trying.”
Atlas looked down at the documents again.
There was one line that made his blood run cold.
Paternal information: sealed by legal order.
He read it twice.
Then again.
“She sealed my name?”
The guard remained silent.
Atlas's fingers trembled.
Elena hadn't simply left.
She had planned everything.
She had protected their daughter from him.
And she had trusted the law more than she trusted her own mate.
He remembered the moment she had stood before him and asked him to choose.
Me or Mara.
My pup or her pup.
He had chosen without hesitation.
Now Elena had answered him in the only way she could.
She had taken their daughter and disappeared.
...
At the pack station, Elena was preparing to leave.
A small travel bag rested beside her chair.
Her daughter slept peacefully against her chest.
The pain in Elena's body was still overwhelming, but she refused to stay.
Every minute she remained near Blackwood territory increased the chance Atlas would find her.
The official returned with the final transfer papers.
“The Pine Ridge Pack has accepted your request.”
Elena nodded.
“When do we leave?”
“The transport is ready.”
She looked down at her daughter.
“Then let's go.”
The official hesitated.
“Elena, are you certain you don't want to tell Alpha Atlas that the pup survived?”
Elena's expression hardened.
“He had his chance.”
She remembered his hand around her wrist.
His accusation.
His slap.
His voice ordering the guards to keep her in the freezing pool.
Then she remembered the moment he had walked away with Mara.
“I begged him to stop.”
Her voice trembled.
“He still chose to leave me there.”
The official lowered his eyes.
Elena carefully adjusted the blanket around her daughter.
“A father isn't someone who simply shares blood with a child.”
She looked toward the snowy road outside.
“He's someone who protects that child when it matters.”
The official said nothing.
Elena stood slowly.
Her legs were still weak, but she forced herself forward.
“Let's go.”
...
At Blackwood Pack, Atlas returned to the banquet hall.
The ceremony had been abandoned.
Mara was waiting near the entrance, still holding her son.
When she saw Atlas, she immediately approached him.
“Atlas, what happened?”
He looked at her without emotion.
“Where is Elena?”
Mara's expression changed.
“I don't know.”
“Did she tell you she was leaving?”
“No.”
Atlas stared at her.
“Did she tell you anything about the baby?”
Mara's fingers tightened around the blanket.
“Why would she tell me?”
Atlas didn't answer.
Something was wrong.
His wolf could smell fear beneath Mara's familiar scent.
“You said yesterday that Elena threw the naming token into the pool.”
Mara nodded quickly.
“She did.”
“Then why did you throw it in first?”
Mara's face drained of color.
Silence filled the hall.
Atlas's eyes narrowed.
“I asked you a question.”
“I didn't.”
Her voice shook.
“You were there.”
“I saw what happened.”
Mara stepped backward.
For the first time, Atlas looked at her as if he were seeing someone he had never truly known.
Then another thought struck him.
“And the baby?”
Mara looked down at her son.
“What about him?”
“Why did you put him between yourself and Elena?”
Mara's lips parted.
“I was frightened.”
Atlas's jaw tightened.
“You deliberately used a newborn pup as a shield.”
“I didn't mean for him to fall.”
“But he did.”
Mara's eyes filled with tears.
“Atlas, you're frightening me.”
He didn't move.
He simply looked at her.
And for the first time, the story he had believed for three years began to crack.
...
Outside the pack house, the first transport vehicle disappeared into the snow.
Inside it, Elena held her daughter close.
The baby stirred and opened her tiny eyes.
Elena smiled through exhausted tears.
“We're going home.”
She didn't know what waited for her in Pine Ridge.
She didn't know how she would raise a pup alone.
She didn't know whether Atlas would ever discover the truth.
But one thing was certain.
She would never again allow someone else's promises to decide the fate of her child.
Behind her, Blackwood was already disappearing into the distance.
And for the first time since becoming Atlas Vale's mate, Elena did not look back.
