The transport carrying Elena and her daughter had been gone for less than an hour when Atlas received another report.
He stood alone in his office, staring at the snow-covered grounds outside the window.
“Alpha.”
The senior guard entered and closed the door behind him.
Atlas turned around.
“Did you find anything?”
“We found the vehicle registration.”
Atlas's eyes sharpened.
“Where was it headed?”
“South.”
His inner wolf immediately recognized the direction.
Pine Ridge.
Atlas's expression changed.
Three years ago, that was where he had found Elena after their first bond dissolution.
If she had gone there again, she had chosen the one place where he had once promised never to hurt her.
“How long ago did it leave?”
“Almost an hour.”
“Send trackers.”
The guard hesitated.
“Alpha, the Registry has issued a protection order. We can't legally enter Pine Ridge territory without permission.”
Atlas's jaw tightened.
“Then request permission.”
“And if they refuse?”
Atlas looked toward the door.
“Then I'll go myself.”
...
Meanwhile, the transport reached the Pine Ridge border just before dawn.
Elena was exhausted.
Her body still ached from the premature delivery, and every movement reminded her how close she had come to losing her daughter.
The moment the vehicle stopped, several Pine Ridge guards approached.
One of them recognized Elena immediately.
“Luna Elena?”
She shook her head.
“Not anymore.”
The guard glanced at the baby in her arms.
“Then what should we call you?”
Elena looked down at her sleeping daughter.
“Elena Hart.”
The guard nodded respectfully.
“Welcome home, Elena Hart.”
Those three words nearly broke her.
Home.
She hadn't heard anyone say that to her in years.
A healer approached and carefully examined the baby.
“She's small, but her breathing is stable.”
Elena closed her eyes in relief.
“Thank you.”
The healer smiled.
“You both need rest.”
Elena nodded.
For the first time in days, she allowed herself to believe that she might actually survive this.
...
Back in Blackwood, Atlas received the response from Pine Ridge.
His request for entry had been denied.
The message was brief.
Elena Hart and her daughter are under Pine Ridge protection. Blackwood representatives are not permitted to approach without authorization.
Atlas read it twice.
His daughter.
The words echoed through his mind.
His daughter was alive.
He suddenly understood why Elena had lied.
She hadn't wanted him to find them.
He had given her every reason not to trust him.
The pool.
The slap.
The accusations.
His decision to protect Mara instead of her.
Atlas closed his eyes.
His wolf whispered the same painful truth again and again.
You lost them.
But Atlas refused to accept it.
“I will find her.”
The senior guard looked at him carefully.
“Alpha, even if you find her, she may not want to come back.”
Atlas said nothing.
Because somewhere inside, he already knew that was true.
...
Later that morning, Mara entered Atlas's office.
She carried her son in her arms and wore an expression of concern.
“Atlas, you haven't slept.”
He didn't answer.
Mara stepped closer.
“You should come back to the banquet hall. The elders are waiting for an explanation.”
Atlas finally looked at her.
“Why didn't you tell me Elena was in danger?”
Mara froze.
“I didn't know.”
“You were the one who answered the guards' call.”
Her face paled.
“I only repeated what you ordered.”
Atlas stood.
“I never ordered you to prevent them from taking her to the hospital.”
Mara's fingers tightened around the baby blanket.
“I was afraid she would hurt herself.”
“So you decided to make the choice for me?”
“Atlas—”
“And the naming token?”
Mara stopped speaking.
Atlas's eyes hardened.
“I know you threw it into the pool.”
She immediately shook her head.
“No.”
“The guards saw you.”
Her breathing became uneven.
“They misunderstood.”
Atlas stepped closer.
“Then explain why you lied.”
Mara couldn't answer.
For three years, Atlas had accepted every accusation she made against Elena.
He had never demanded proof.
Never questioned her tears.
Never noticed how perfectly every incident worked in her favor.
Now he began remembering things he had ignored.
The coffee.
The stairs.
The scratches.
Every accusation.
Every time Elena had tried to explain.
Every time he had refused to listen.
His wolf growled inside him.
Mara took a step back.
“You don't believe me anymore?”
Atlas stared at her.
“I'm not sure what I believe.”
For Mara, those words were more frightening than anger.
...
In Pine Ridge, Elena woke to the sound of her daughter crying.
She immediately gathered the pup into her arms.
“I'm here.”
The tiny pup quieted against her chest.
Elena kissed her forehead.
Outside the window, the first sunlight touched the snowy mountains.
A new day had begun.
She had lost her mate.
She had lost her position as Luna.
She had nearly lost her life.
But she still had her daughter.
And this time, she would build a life where no one could make her feel like she was second choice.
Elena looked toward the distant mountains.
She didn't know that in Blackwood, Atlas had finally begun uncovering the truth.
She didn't know that Mara's carefully constructed lies were starting to collapse.
And she certainly didn't know that Atlas had already made a decision.
He would not force Elena to return.
But he would uncover every lie that had separated them.
Even if the truth destroyed everything he had once called his home.
