Three days had passed since Elena arrived in Pine Ridge.
For the first time in years, she slept without checking the pack link before closing her eyes.
There was no Alpha waiting for her answer.
No patrol report she was expected to respond to.
No Mara-related emergency demanding her attention.
Only the quiet breathing of her daughter beside her.
But peace never lasted long.
That morning, a Pine Ridge elder entered Elena's room carrying a sealed envelope.
“This was delivered through the inter-pack registry.”
Elena frowned.
“From Blackwood?”
The elder nodded.
“From Atlas Vale.”
Her fingers tightened around the blanket.
She had expected this.
Eventually, Atlas would come looking for answers.
“I don't want to see him.”
“You don't have to.”
The elder placed the envelope on the table.
“But you should know what he sent.”
Elena stared at it for several seconds before opening it.
Inside was a single document.
It was a formal request for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her daughter's birth.
Elena's expression hardened.
“He's trying to take my daughter.”
“Not yet,” the elder said calmly.
“The request asks for an investigation, not custody.”
Elena looked down at the document again.
“He has no right.”
“Legally, the sealed record protects you for now.”
The elder paused.
“But if Atlas can prove the child is his, the matter may become more complicated.”
Elena's heart sank.
She had known this day would come.
That was why she had left.
That was why she had sealed the paternal record.
She would not allow Atlas to claim a child he had abandoned before she had even taken her first breath.
...
At the same time, Atlas sat in front of the Blackwood elders.
The atmosphere was tense.
The naming ceremony had been postponed indefinitely.
Mara's son remained officially recognized as a Vale bloodline child, but the elders had begun asking questions.
One elder placed a stack of reports on the table.
“We reviewed the hospital records.”
Atlas looked up.
“And?”
“The Luna's premature labor was caused by hypothermia, blood loss, and prolonged physical stress.”
Atlas's face tightened.
“I know.”
“Do you?”
The elder's voice was cold.
“Because the medical staff also recorded that she repeatedly requested emergency assistance while you were unavailable.”
Atlas lowered his gaze.
“I was told she was safe.”
“By whom?”
Silence filled the room.
Everyone knew the answer.
Mara.
Another elder spoke.
“The guards also testified that Mara answered the Alpha's phone when they called for help.”
Atlas's eyes sharpened.
“I didn't authorize that.”
“Exactly.”
The elder slid another report across the table.
“We believe the events surrounding the pool incident require a formal investigation.”
Atlas stared at the report.
For the first time, his authority could not protect him from the consequences of his own decisions.
“Proceed.”
The elders exchanged surprised looks.
Atlas's voice was hollow.
“Investigate everything.”
He looked at the documents in front of him.
“I want the truth, even if it destroys me.”
...
That afternoon, Elena received another message.
This time, it came from the hospital doctor who had delivered her daughter.
The doctor wanted to speak with her privately.
Elena arrived at the clinic and found the doctor waiting.
“How is my daughter?”
“She's improving.”
Elena's shoulders relaxed slightly.
“Then why did you ask me to come?”
The doctor placed a medical file on the desk.
“Because there's something I need you to know.”
Elena opened the file.
The doctor pointed to the birth record.
“Your daughter wasn't simply unresponsive at birth.”
Elena looked up.
“What do you mean?”
“Her bloodline response was unusually weak, but it wasn't absent.”
Elena's heart began beating faster.
“Could she have survived?”
“Yes.”
The doctor nodded.
“And that's what happened.”
Elena stared at the report.
“Then why did the official record say she died?”
The doctor hesitated.
“Because someone requested that the preliminary report be used instead of the final medical record.”
Elena's face went pale.
“Who?”
The doctor shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Then she pushed another page toward Elena.
“But the request was made after your daughter had already been successfully resuscitated.”
Elena's fingers trembled.
Someone had deliberately hidden the truth.
And she suddenly realized that her daughter hadn't been the only thing being manipulated.
Someone had wanted Atlas to believe the child was dead.
Someone had wanted Elena to disappear.
Someone had something to gain from both of them being separated.
...
That night, Atlas received the same medical report.
He read it in silence.
Then his eyes stopped on one sentence.
The infant demonstrated stable cardiac activity following resuscitation.
His hands began to shake.
His daughter had survived.
But the next line was even more disturbing.
The final report was replaced in the administrative system by an earlier preliminary notation.
Atlas stood abruptly.
“Who changed this?”
The investigator shook his head.
“We're still tracing the authorization.”
Atlas's wolf growled violently.
This was no longer just about Elena leaving him.
Someone had interfered with the birth records.
Someone had helped conceal his daughter's survival.
And Atlas knew only one person had been close enough to influence what happened after Elena entered the hospital.
Mara.
He stared at the closed door.
For three years, he had believed he was protecting her.
Now he wondered whether she had been protecting herself.
And if that was true, then the greatest betrayal of his life had never been Elena leaving him.
It had been trusting the wrong woman.
