Atlas stood motionless in the center of the council chamber.
For the first time since becoming Alpha, he looked completely lost.
The elders had already received the sealed records from the Registry.
The truth could no longer be buried.
Elena had survived.
Their daughter had survived.
And both of them had left Blackwood territory without telling him.
Atlas's inner wolf clawed desperately at the bond that was no longer there.
Nothing answered.
No warmth.
No familiar presence.
No Elena.
Only an unbearable silence.
Mara stood several steps away, her face drained of color.
“Atlas…”
He slowly turned toward her.
There was no tenderness in his eyes anymore.
“You knew.”
Mara's lips trembled.
“I didn't know she would leave.”
“That isn't what I asked.”
She lowered her eyes.
The silence was answer enough.
Atlas's hands curled into fists.
“The token.”
Mara looked up sharply.
“What about it?”
“You threw it into the pool.”
Her face went pale.
“I was scared.”
“And Elena nearly died because of it.”
No one in the room dared speak.
Atlas remembered every word he had said that night.
Find the token.
Don't leave the pool.
You can swim.
You can shift.
He had believed Mara without asking a single question.
He had looked at his pregnant mate and seen an enemy instead of the woman carrying his child.
Then came the sentence that destroyed him completely.
“She gave birth to our daughter alone.”
The doctor standing beside the elder spoke quietly.
“She nearly died on the operating table.”
Atlas closed his eyes.
He could still remember Elena's face when she had asked him one final time to choose.
Me or Mara.
My pup or her pup.
He had never answered her.
He had simply chosen Mara by his actions.
Now Elena had made the choice for him.
She had chosen herself.
She had chosen their daughter.
And she had chosen a life where he no longer had any place.
Atlas opened his eyes.
“Where is she?”
The Registry clerk shook his head.
“The location of the Luna and her pup has been sealed.”
“I'm the Alpha of Blackwood.”
“Not anymore in matters concerning Elena Hart.”
The words struck harder than any physical blow.
Atlas stepped backward.
His wolf finally released a howl inside his mind.
It wasn't anger.
It was grief.
Pure, devastating grief.
Across the room, Mara began to cry.
“I never wanted to replace her.”
Atlas looked at her.
For three years, he had used responsibility as an excuse.
Now he finally understood the difference between protecting someone and destroying another person to protect them.
“You didn't have to replace her,” he said quietly.
“I did that myself.”
Then he walked away.
For the first time, Mara didn't follow him.
She knew there was nothing left to say.
Outside the council chamber, snow was falling over Blackwood territory.
Atlas stood beneath the gray sky and stared toward the southern road.
Somewhere beyond those mountains was Elena.
Somewhere beyond them was his daughter.
And for the first time, he understood that wanting them back didn't give him the right to have them.
Elena had spent years begging him to protect what they had.
He had failed.
Now he would have to live with the consequences.
