The moment the words left the elder’s mouth, the entire hall fell silent.
Atlas stood motionless, staring at the sealed memorial urn resting on the table before him.
His daughter was dead.
His daughter.
The words repeated inside his head until they became unbearable.
His inner wolf howled in agony, demanding that he deny what he had heard.
But the registry seal was real.
The hospital record was real.
And Elena was gone.
“Where is Elena?” Atlas finally asked.
The guard lowered his eyes.
“She left the hospital before dawn.”
Atlas’s heart seemed to stop.
“Left?”
“She requested a transfer to Pine Ridge.”
Mara’s face changed instantly.
“She left?”
Atlas turned toward her.
For the first time, there was no tenderness in his expression.
“Why didn't anyone tell me?”
Mara swallowed.
“You were preparing for the ceremony.”
“I asked where Elena was.”
His voice became dangerously quiet.
“Why didn't you tell me she had been taken to the hospital?”
Mara opened her mouth, but no answer came.
The elders exchanged uneasy glances.
Atlas looked back at the memorial urn.
His hand trembled as he reached for it.
Inside was the only thing he had left of the child he had never held.
A daughter he had abandoned before she had even taken her first breath.
His wolf screamed again.
Atlas staggered backward.
“No.”
He shook his head.
“This isn't possible.”
Then a sudden scent reached him.
Faint.
Almost completely faded.
Jasmine.
Elena's scent.
It clung to the blanket wrapped around the urn.
Atlas pressed the fabric to his face, and the memory of Elena smiling at him flooded through his mind.
The day she told him she was pregnant.
The way her eyes had filled with tears when he promised to protect her.
The way she had knitted tiny clothes for their pup.
And then the image changed.
Elena standing beside the frozen pool.
Elena struggling beneath the water.
Elena calling for him while he refused to answer.
Atlas's knees nearly gave way.
He suddenly understood.
She hadn't abandoned him.
He had abandoned her.
“Find her.”
The guards looked at him.
“Alpha?”
Atlas's eyes were bloodshot.
“Find Elena immediately.”
One of the guards hesitated.
“She has already transferred her pack registration. Pine Ridge accepted her departure.”
“Then contact Pine Ridge.”
“We tried.”
Atlas's expression hardened.
“And?”
“They refused to provide her location.”
Silence filled the hall.
Atlas looked toward the door.
For the first time in three years, he understood what it meant for Elena to truly leave him.
She had severed the pack link.
She had dissolved their bond.
And she had taken their child away without leaving him even a name.
Mara stepped closer.
“Atlas, I'm sorry.”
He didn't look at her.
“Don't.”
She froze.
“I only wanted you to protect me and our son.”
Atlas finally turned.
“Our son?”
Mara's face went pale.
“Yes.”
“You told me Elena attacked him.”
“She did.”
“You told me she threw the token into the pool.”
Mara's lips trembled.
“She did.”
Atlas stared at her for several seconds.
Then the senior guard stepped forward.
“Alpha, there is something you should know.”
Mara immediately looked at him.
“What?”
The guard swallowed.
“The security record from the pool has been recovered.”
Atlas's eyes narrowed.
“Show me.”
The guard activated the recording crystal.
The image appeared above the table.
Everyone watched in silence.
Mara stood beside the pool.
She looked around.
Then she deliberately threw the naming token into the water herself.
Atlas stopped breathing.
The recording continued.
Mara had waited until Elena approached before crying out.
Every accusation.
Every lie.
Every carefully chosen word.
Then came Atlas's own voice.
“She is not to leave this pool until she finds that naming token.”
The recording ended.
No one dared speak.
Atlas stared at Mara.
His wolf had gone completely silent.
“You lied to me.”
Mara's eyes filled with tears.
“Atlas, I was afraid.”
“You lied to me.”
His Alpha pressure filled the hall.
Mara dropped to her knees.
“I didn't know she would get hurt that badly.”
Atlas closed his eyes.
Those words were enough.
She had known.
Maybe she hadn't planned the premature labor.
Maybe she hadn't expected Elena to nearly die.
But she had known Elena would suffer.
And Atlas had helped her do it.
He had chosen Mara's words over Elena's truth.
Again.
He looked at the memorial urn one final time.
Then he whispered the words he should have said years ago.
“I'm sorry, little one.”
But there was no child left to hear him.
And somewhere far beyond Blackwood territory, Elena was already traveling south.
She held her newborn daughter against her chest.
The pup was weak, but alive.
Elena kissed her tiny forehead.
“You don't need his name.”
Her voice trembled.
“You have mine.”
Outside the carriage window, the snow slowly disappeared.
For the first time, Elena could see green hills beyond the road.
Pine Ridge territory was ahead.
She looked down at her daughter.
And quietly chose her name.
“Serena Hart.”
The pup stirred against her chest.
Elena smiled through her tears.
Behind them, Blackwood was finally beginning to face the truth.
But Elena was no longer waiting for Atlas to discover her worth.
She had already discovered it herself.
