By the time Atlas reached the Pine Ridge border, Elena was already gone.
He had ridden through the night without stopping, refusing to listen to the guards who warned him that his body needed rest.
None of it mattered.
He had to find her.
He had to find his daughter.
The border guards of Pine Ridge stopped him before he could enter.
“Alpha Atlas, you cannot cross without authorization.”
Atlas's eyes were cold.
“I'm here for Elena Hart.”
The guard didn't move.
“Luna Elena has formally transferred her allegiance. Her location is protected.”
“She is my mate.”
The guard's expression didn't change.
“Not anymore.”
The words struck harder than any physical blow.
Atlas's inner wolf stirred painfully.
He remembered Elena standing in front of him only days ago, asking whether his offer to dissolve their bond still stood.
At the time, he had thought she was simply angry.
He had believed she would eventually forgive him.
Now he understood that she had been saying goodbye.
“Please,” Atlas said quietly.
The guard looked surprised.
“I need to see her.”
“She doesn't want to see you.”
Atlas closed his eyes.
For years, Elena had been the one person who always opened the door for him.
Now even the border would not let him pass.
“What about my daughter?”
The guard hesitated.
“You were told she died.”
Atlas's jaw tightened.
“I want to see the records.”
The guard shook his head.
“The record has been sealed.”
“By whose order?”
“By the mother.”
Atlas stood there in silence.
The mother.
Elena had made the decision herself.
She had protected their child from him.
And somehow, that hurt more than knowing the pup had been declared dead.
Back in Pine Ridge, Elena had finally arrived at a quiet medical residence.
She was exhausted.
Her body still ached from the emergency delivery, and every breath reminded her how close she had come to losing everything.
But when she looked down at Serena, none of that mattered.
The tiny pup was sleeping peacefully in her arms.
A healer entered the room and smiled.
“Her heartbeat is stronger today.”
Elena's eyes filled with relief.
“Will she be all right?”
“She'll need careful monitoring for a while, but she is fighting.”
Elena gently touched Serena's tiny fingers.
“She's a fighter.”
The healer nodded.
“Just like her mother.”
Elena looked toward the window.
For the first time since leaving Blackwood, she allowed herself to breathe without fear.
She didn't have to hide anymore.
She didn't have to wonder whether Atlas would choose someone else.
She didn't have to listen to excuses about duty.
She only had to protect herself and her daughter.
A knock sounded at the door.
A Pine Ridge elder entered carrying a sealed document.
“Elena, the transfer has been approved.”
She accepted it with both hands.
“Thank you.”
The elder studied her carefully.
“Blackwood has requested your return.”
Elena's expression remained calm.
“I won't go back.”
“They also requested access to the child's records.”
Elena's fingers tightened around the document.
“They don't have that right.”
“Not unless the Registry determines otherwise.”
Elena looked down at Serena.
“Then I will fight it.”
The elder smiled faintly.
“You don't have to fight alone anymore.”
Outside the residence, a messenger arrived from the border.
He carried a single letter from Atlas.
Elena stared at the envelope for a long time.
She recognized his handwriting immediately.
She could have burned it without opening it.
Instead, she unfolded the paper.
There were only a few lines.
“Elena, I know I have no right to ask you for anything.”
“But please let me see our daughter.”
“I should have protected you.”
“I should have believed you.”
“I was wrong.”
Elena read the letter twice.
Then she folded it carefully.
The old Elena might have cried.
She might have run back to him.
She might have convinced herself that regret was the same thing as change.
But that woman was gone.
She handed the letter back to the messenger.
“Tell Atlas something for me.”
The messenger waited.
Elena looked at Serena.
“He had one chance to be her father.”
Her voice was quiet.
“He chose not to be.”
The messenger lowered his head.
“What should I tell him about the child?”
Elena's expression softened.
“Tell him nothing.”
Across the border, Atlas waited for an answer that never came.
And for the first time in his life, the Alpha of Blackwood understood that power could not force someone to love him.
Not anymore.
That night, Elena placed Serena beside her and whispered a promise.
“I don't know what our future will look like.”
She kissed her daughter's forehead.
“But I promise you this.”
“No one will ever make you feel like you are second choice.”
Serena stirred softly in her sleep.
Elena smiled.
Far away, Atlas stood alone beneath the same moon.
He had everything an Alpha could possess.
A powerful pack.
A respected name.
A position everyone envied.
And yet, for the first time, he understood that he had lost the only two people who had ever truly belonged beside him.
Elena.
And the daughter he had never even held.
