Three months passed after Elena arrived in Pine Ridge.
Winter slowly gave way to spring.
For the first time in years, Elena woke each morning without checking the pack link.
There was no Alpha calling her name.
No patrol reports.
No arguments about Mara.
No fear of what she might discover next.
There was only silence.
And Serena.
Her daughter had grown stronger every day.
The healers were still cautious because of her premature birth, but Serena was stubbornly determined to survive.
She had Elena's eyes.
Every time she opened them, Elena felt a strange warmth spread through her chest.
One morning, Elena carried Serena into the garden behind the residence.
The little pup was wrapped in a soft blanket, her tiny fingers gripping Elena's collar.
“Look at that.”
The Pine Ridge healer smiled.
“She's trying to sit up already.”
Elena laughed softly.
“She's always been impatient.”
The healer's smile faded when a messenger approached.
“Elena.”
She turned.
“What is it?”
“A delegation from Blackwood has arrived.”
Elena's expression immediately hardened.
“Why?”
“They requested a formal meeting regarding Serena's bloodline.”
Elena looked down at her daughter.
For three months, she had managed to keep Blackwood away.
But she knew this day would eventually come.
“Who sent them?”
The messenger hesitated.
“Atlas.”
Elena closed her eyes for a moment.
She had known he wouldn't give up forever.
But she hadn't expected him to come through the Registry.
“Tell them I'll meet them.”
The meeting was held that afternoon in the Pine Ridge council chamber.
Three Blackwood elders sat across from Elena.
Atlas wasn't there.
That surprised her.
The eldest elder placed a document on the table.
“Alpha Atlas has requested that Serena's paternal bloodline be formally recognized.”
Elena didn't touch the document.
“He had the opportunity to recognize her when she was born.”
“He didn't know she survived.”
“He didn't ask.”
The elder fell silent.
Elena's voice remained calm.
“He believed she was dead because that was what he was told. But even before that, he had already chosen another woman and another child.”
One of the elders lowered his eyes.
“Alpha Atlas accepts responsibility for his mistakes.”
Elena almost smiled.
“Responsibility isn't something you accept after losing everything.”
The room became silent.
She continued.
“Responsibility is what you take before someone gets hurt.”
The elder looked at her carefully.
“What do you want?”
“Nothing from Blackwood.”
“And Serena?”
Elena looked toward the window.
“She stays with me.”
“You are denying her relationship with her father?”
Elena shook her head.
“I'm protecting her from being treated like a replacement child.”
The elders exchanged glances.
Then the door opened.
Atlas walked inside.
Elena's heart gave one painful beat.
He looked different.
Thinner.
Tired.
The confident Alpha she remembered was gone.
His cedar scent reached her, but her wolf remained completely still.
There was no pull.
No longing.
No bond.
Only memory.
Atlas stopped several steps away.
His eyes immediately fell on the baby in Elena's arms.
His daughter.
He had imagined this moment countless times.
But nothing had prepared him for seeing her alive.
His eyes reddened.
“She's beautiful.”
Elena said nothing.
Atlas swallowed.
“What's her name?”
“Serena.”
He repeated it quietly.
“Serena.”
His voice broke on the second syllable.
He took one step forward.
Elena instinctively stepped back.
Atlas stopped immediately.
He understood.
He wasn't allowed to come closer.
“Can I hold her?”
Elena shook her head.
“Not today.”
Pain crossed his face.
But he didn't argue.
“Then when?”
“I don't know.”
Atlas looked down.
“I deserve that.”
Elena stared at him.
For once, he wasn't making excuses.
He wasn't mentioning duty.
He wasn't defending Mara.
He wasn't asking Elena to understand.
He was simply standing there and accepting the consequences.
“Mara has been removed from the Alpha residence,” he said quietly.
Elena's expression didn't change.
“That isn't my concern.”
“I know.”
“Her son?”
“Still protected by Blackwood.”
Atlas paused.
“But he won't inherit my position automatically.”
Elena looked at him.
“You don't need to explain your pack politics to me.”
“I know.”
His voice became quieter.
“I just wanted you to know that I finally understood what I did.”
Elena looked down at Serena.
The baby had fallen asleep against her chest.
“Understanding it doesn't undo it.”
Atlas nodded.
“I know.”
He took a deep breath.
“I won't force you to return.”
Elena finally looked directly at him.
“Good.”
“I won't demand access to Serena.”
“Good.”
“And I won't interfere with your life.”
Elena studied him for a long moment.
“Then why are you here?”
Atlas's eyes filled with regret.
“Because I wanted to see the life I destroyed.”
Elena's chest tightened.
But she didn't let him see it.
She simply turned toward the door.
“You've seen it.”
Atlas nodded.
“Yes.”
Elena walked away with Serena in her arms.
She didn't look back.
Outside, the afternoon sun warmed the garden.
Serena stirred and opened her eyes.
Elena kissed her forehead.
“We're going home.”
Behind the council chamber window, Atlas watched them disappear.
His daughter was alive.
Elena was alive.
And neither of them belonged to him anymore.
For the first time, Atlas understood that regret was not a key.
Some doors closed because someone had finally learned how to protect themselves.
And Elena had closed hers.
